The game on Dec 1 should be very good game.Breakdown the matchups.I know its early but I feel the Heels will beat them in this early matchup. The terps have three players in Stone.Suilamon and Carter who will have to adjust to playing with the returning players. The Heels players are experienced and hungry.

Lets see, they have Trimble and Robert Carter/Suilamon transfers eligible so they have practice time with the team, Stone should not be hard to mix in. Jake leyman is pretty solid as well. But over all I don't see the hype for them, many saying they are the best team in the country? Looks to me like the same ole terps the ACC consistently beat up on that had to run to the Big 10 to be able to win.

I like our back court a lot, honestly think we have as good a back court as anyone in the country. This game looks to me top hinge on our front court, I felt we struggled with opposing front courts last season, the terps do have a 7ft kid and some burly types in their front court, not really long, should help us.

WE are really experienced (don't think we will be starting a freshman) so we should come out of the gate strong, I take UNC by 12.

MD will be good ,Very good but I too am seeing more sizzle than steak

Should be a very good game but I like our chances a LOT!!!!

Maryland's hype will be determined by how good Trimble is. If he is as good as advertised, we will have problems containing him. If is able to dissect our defense the way he has other teams where he forces help defensively, then we will have problems. If he's able to do that, they will pick us apart with the guys like Sully, Stone, and Carter. The X factor will be Layman. We've never been able to guard stretch 4's. He will certainly get his share of open looks from the perimeter, as our bigs aren't comfortable chasing guys out on the wing. What he does with those opportunities will determine their success. With all that said, if Trimble is just another D1 PG, then we should have no problems with them. The other factor to consider is the "intimidation" edge that we normally have over other teams who have not had our kind of success as a program. You can throw that out the window, because MD will not be intimidated. In fact, they will come in trying to intimidate us. Especially with guys like Sully on board who has had some success against us.

Sulky was a cancer at puke off the court and a selfish player on it. I believe in second chances, but I wouldn't expect him to change his spots that rapidly. I love Trimble's skill, athleticism, and toughness, but I didn't see the overwhelming strength/speed that has historically given us trouble. I believe we have enough strong, experienced, and athletic guards to cover him. I think this will be a great test for our team, but I expect our bigs to hold their own and our experienced backcourt to make the difference in a close contest.

Experienced backcourt? Other than Paige, who has any real experience at the guard spot?

Nate Britt is a junior, Justin Jackson played both SG and SF last year. JB started playing more minutes down the stretch.

That kid, Sillyman, isn't all that, now the Trimble kid, from what I have read, is a pretty good player...as key said, sizzle, as to whether all the parts come together for the Terps....we got the parts and they are together, I'm going with the Heels, as always.

Britt is a Jr with starting experience, Joel Berry got starter minutes down the stretch last season even thou he did not begin a game for us. Even Stillman White started for is in the NCAAT. Theo got some game experience before he got hurt, his minutes were ramping up prior to injury, in fact he won a game for us (ND) with excellent second half play. Of course Jackson started all season last year. And then there is the already started for 3 years Paige.

Truth is when you look at our back court the only guy that will get anything but mop up minutes that is not experienced is Kenny Williams.

In the college game, especially as it goes in the game today, I don't see how you are going to have a more experienced back court than we have for this season.

When you're right, you're right Dave. We should make a deep run.

You didn't forget about Britt and berry did you..berry got nearly all of the crunch time minutes at the end of the season and tournament time!!..that's going to pay off big time for us this year!!

Not scared. Trimble is a nice player but he can disappear at times. Also, he doesn't share the rock well. I think he only had one or two games last year where he had over 5 assists and he's pretty loose with the ball (close to a 1:1 A/TO ratio).

They have some bigs but so do we. And ours are experienced.

MD lost their most important player - Dez Wells. He was a tough, gritty kid that could play and had leadership skills. Suliamon isn't filling his shoes. In fact, Suliamon is the opposite of Dez Wells.

Who starts for Maryland? I assume these 4 guys will start

Trimble
Sulaimon
Layman
Stone

Layman can play SF or PF, so which position does Turgeon fill from his roster?

Most people seem to think that Carter and Stone won't be on the floor together too much, but I'm not so sure. My vague recollection of Carter with Ga Tech a couple of years back was of a pretty good player who could play facing or with his back to the basket, I wasn't impressed with his conditioning or his motor, but had the impression that he could be very good if he applied himself. If he's lean and mean, maybe he and Stone play side-by-side more than people think.

With Carter at PF, Layman and Justin face off in what could be a really fun contest. Justin is more talented but Layman has the experience and is no slouch in the talent department. They are more similar than different. Both good slashers with good outside shots and move well with and without the ball.

You may not want to but you sort of have to give the edge to Trimble at point over Berry. Simply based on Trimble having a really good frosh year, whereas Berry had a promising but inconsistent frosh year. If you think Berry turned the corner at the end of last season, then Trimble may not have much of an edge. Trimble is a better scorer (41% from deep and 86% from FT - and he got to the FT line a whole lot). But MD will need Trimble to score, whereas UNC has more options. And Berry's D could give Trimble some headaches.

SG might be closer than we like, too. Sulaimon is a fine defender, but a healthy Marcus will get his points. Before being dismissed, Sulaimon was hitting 40% from deep and is a good slasher. So he could get his points as well. Edge to Marcus but maybe not by a whole lot. Sulaimon is a tough player and has something to prove.

The clips I've seen of Stone showed a guy who is very strong close to the basket. And he stays close to the basket. But that means he's vulnerable to someone who can step back and hit his shot. We have a couple of guys who can do that. I imagine a lot of plays when Kennedy backs him in a bit and then kicks to Brice for the short jumper. We know Kennedy is a fine passer and unless Brice is just having a bad day, his short jumper is deadly.

If Layman plays PF, Brice will finally face someone scrawnier than he is. As good as Layman is, I don't see that working out very well for him. But there is a possibility Layman could get Brice in foul trouble. Not to worry. We have a future pro coming off the bench.

Roy has more options than Turgeon. But Turgeon has some other guys, too. Not as many proven guys. But he has a couple of bigs near 7 feet. And Nickens is a decent SF if they play Layman at PF. Justin wins that matchup, but if Layman can frustrate Brice, that might be a tradeoff Turgeon will accept.

I think we win and win it more easily than the pundits will predict. But there are a number of unanswered questions - more for MD, but some for us, too - that could make it close.
