UNC vs Pittsburgh Official Game Thread

This is just not the right diagnosis of the issue. We dumped it down to Bacot plenty in the second half. You're simply not going to get a good post-up opportunity every single possession in high level ACC play, so your offense has to consist of more than post-ups to your center (if you're going to be a good team anyway).

You have to be able to create some advantages with your guards, either by beating their guy off the dribble, getting by the big in the pick-and-roll, or off a motion play. We couldn't do any of those things, so we were forced to take low percentage shots as the clock wound down. It wasn't an issue of poor shot selection, it was getting forced into bad shots because we couldn't get into advantageous positions.

We're supposed to have one of the best backcourts in the country, at least offensively. We should be able to do a heck of a lot more than we did today. Both Davis and Love played way below their standards. And it's not easy to see in the stats, but Leaky makes it a lot harder because he's such a non-entity on one end. His guy sags way off and when we do create an advantage the kick outs to him typically lead to resetting the offense rather than sustaining the advantage. Those three were the big issues, though Leaky's offense is mostly always like that so hard to fault him.
Well... they shot themselves out of a 9-point lead and turned it over and missed FTs and basically played poorly.

That mock-up of the 1982 SI cover is proving to be a total embarrassment. This team isn't going to sniff the FF. They'll be lucky to even make the NCAAT

It’s really pretty simple to figure out.. when Davis & Love struggle the team struggles.. unfortunately for them the refs were allowing a lot of physical play and neither can play through contact

Caleb Love on a milk carton WTF! How can he be a complete NO- SHOW in the first game back from break?!?!.
THIS game will haunt him during draft process.😔

if i had to choose prob Puff. again, my assessment is based solely on the fact that he didn’t give Dunn much time at all against far less talented teams but yet gave Puff way more time. the timing of Dunn seeing that much time along with them scoring at will on him and then us not scoring for over 4 minutes simply just doesn’t add up. not a good move on his part.
Dunn was hurt so didn't play for several games. Otherwise their minutes haven't been that different (10 per game for Dunn vs 16 for Puff).

In hindsight Puff looks like a better call, but I don't think it was a bad call at the time. Dunn outplayed Puff to that point (Puff had a bad foul on a 3 and a horrible wasted shot in the first half, while Dunn hit two good shots). We needed someone to help offensively and you just hope Dunn can hold his own on D -- just didn't work out.

This was mostly on the coaching staff which coached one of the worst games I have seen them coach.

First, they allowed Davis to deflate the ball starting around the 10 minute mark. This screwed up the offensive flow and we then went about 5 minutes without a bucket. Stall ball rarely works and might as well be called prevent offense.

Then they failed to press or trap at all for the first 38 minutes of the game.

They allowed Love to pout on the court most of the game because he didn’t have 20 points and then decided to give him the ball with 1 minute left in the game so he could step on the sideline for a turnover.

They forgot that Jalen Washington even existed and then never brought in Puff after the early fouls.

They continue to give Leaky too many minutes and he’s offensive inept most games.

Just a poorly coached game from an underwhelming staff.

Too many mistakes, poor ft shooting, dumb passes really have togetback to basics...they have no killer instinct buttheycan still turn it around. A step back today

Poor coaching is the reason for all the struggles. Everything fell our way at the end of year last season. I’ve seen many coaches have first year success and end up being a terrible coach. Support the staff, bash me, I don’t care. When this team shows they can pull away consistently, not choke games and lose big leads, and beat who they should beat, maybe then I’ll believe in them.

Got friends at the game today. Couldn’t stop commenting on how poor Love’s body language was today.
Love didn't have a point in the second half until five seconds left off a banked three. That was also our only three of the whole second half. Tells you all you need to know about our offensive struggles.

On the draft process, I don't really see Love getting drafted. Maybe second round, but I don't think any of the people claiming Love could've gone in the first round last year are correct. He's not a point guard, too many turnovers and not enough passing ability. For a shooting guard he's undersized and he's shooting 29% from three. Oh, and he's not a good defender, even at the college level. What role is he playing in the NBA?

Well we were favored by 1 in this game I believe, so anyone acting like this is some horrible loss is not assessing things properly. It would've been a big win and was quite winnable, but we'll be fine. Love and Davis had probably the worst games they'll play all year.

Try these sexy second half stat lines on for size (excluding Love’s meaningless 3 after it was over):

Love and RJ: 0-6 FG 4 fouls 2 turnovers.
Love doesn’t go to the ft line all game

For full game they were 1-7 from 3 and 6-19 for all FGs

Do we really want leaky taking as many shots as our guards?

And - I didn’t see the game but did leaky guard Burton at all? We knew a few minutes in that he was the only guy who could beat us with a huge performance. Just hold him to 50% shooting and we win going away.

I thought this team would build on the big 10 wins. Whether it’s Hubert or Hubert /Love something seems way messed up about the teams attitude and mojo.

No way you should give up a 9 point lead late even if you have to double / trap to keep the one guy who can beat you - from scoring

He is not. That being said, I mentioned in another thread thst our backcourt will be better next season. Yes, that is without Caleb Love. I have been ready to move on, for some time now.

We’ve stepped back in coaching from Roy-no doubt. What’s frustrating is that we have shown flashes of good coaching, and playing “the carolina way”. But we revert back to the pouty, selfish, boring dribbling with very little secondary break points. This is Roy’s guy. I want to support him but it’s his responsibility to get these guys to play at a consistent high level.

I think we'll make the tournament but yeah probably a mid seed like last year. Definitely disappointing with the skill on this team, but a good shot for the second weekend at minimum.

What do we do next year? I'm not sure Bacot/Love have anywhere to go where they can make more money than UNC. We can run it back again but Love needs to get even better with the ball, and we need a forward upgrade over Leaky/Nance/Puff for sure. If this team had Justin Jackson or even Cam they'd be a heck of a lot better. But then Hubert isn't/hasn't been recruiting any forwards, which I don't understand.

Piss poor effort this week by the staff and the players to get ready for what we had to know was going to be a very physical game. Everyone knows that if you get physical with us, we generally don’t respond well. Yet another example of how to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. I’m sincerely disgusted with this team, and by association the staff. We have too much experience to be playing like this.

Both McDonalds All-Americans and Juniors. Overrated

We won the 1st quarter and lost the other 3.

Not sure what that means, but am very sure I don't like it.

Aside from one guy, the defense was ok. Staff should have played multyple defenses so Burton couldn't get so comfortable, but our offense stunk up the place today.
That one guy won the game. Our offensive stats aren't bad outside of Love. Leaky and Love got absolutely torched.
