Any fellow Tar Heel wrestling fans on the board? I’m a huge wrestling fan as that was my best sport back in high school and I wrestled club at UNC when I was there. I post on a national college wrestling forum quite a bit, but I’m the only UNC wrestling fan on the entire forum haha. Figured I’d check over here for any fellow fans.

Heels kick off the season officially tomorrow at the southeast open tournament (formerly known as the Hokie Open). Should be some good early season matches between Tar Heel teammates and other schools.

Probably not much traffic here for that sport. Keep poasting updates, someone will chime in.

We have a thread somewhere around OOTB that tracks other UNC sports; might be a good place to provide updates. I think most of us would be good with knowing how the Heels are doing in other sports, even if we dont always follow them.

I’ll post updates sporadically so you guys can follow along.

Here is a preliminary, shortened preview. UNC wrestling was basically a dumpster fire up until about 5 years ago. We hired a guy who was just out of college wrestling and an Olympic bronze medalist named Coleman Scott. He’s started a youth movement with coaches and brought on some elite young coaches with extremely decorated college careers. Flash forward to now and the team is ranked 19th in the country to start the season (which is the highest I can ever remember). National publications actually think the ceiling for this team could be placing 10-12th in the nation when it’s all said and done. Which is crazy to think about considering where the team was just a short time ago. We have an individual named Austin O’Conner that wrestles in the 149 pound weight class. He is the first consensus #1 ranked wrestler in the country for his weight that UNC has had in over 2 decades. I think he has a really good chance to bring home UNCs first individual national championship since 1993. And the best part is he’s only a redshirt sophomore this year. The team is loaded with underclassmen as the starting lineup only features 1 junior and 1 senior. Lots of good things in store for UNC wrestling for years to come.

I've failed to start my annual other sports thread this year. I'll have to get it up and running when I get a chance.

Welcome aboard. Wrestling and football were my primary sports growing up, especially the former. I miss everything about those days except sucking down weight.

I follow Carolina wrestling as well as the rest of the conference, and it's good to know someone else here does, too. The big question is will the ACC Network broadcast the sport, at least the duals?

Nice - how did that tournament over the weekend go?

So that’s a great question. I subscribe to Flowrestling and can catch a bunch of matches there. I know that ACC matches get put on watch ESPN quite a bit, but the new (in my opinion awful) ACC network has thrown a wrench in that. You have to have one of the few TV providers that carries the ACC network. This past weekend I was able to watch the Virginia tech-Missouri match only on my phone for some reason.... I have a feeling that the acc network is going to make watching difficult this year. Guess we will find out Friday in the first dual meet against Michigan. As soon as I find a way to watch I will post my findings.

If I’m being honest it was a little bit of a clunker to start the season. The tournament didn’t feature a ton of high level competition. The best teams there were UNC, Missouri, Campbell, and Virginia tech sent a few guys. UNC didn’t send 3 starters (O’Conner, Kane, and Melendez) for precautionary reasons with some nagging injuries. The heels had 1 wrestler finish in 1st place (heavyweight Andrew Gunning), 2 guys finish 2nd (Zach Sherman at 141 and Kennedy Monday at 165), and 1 guy finish 3rd (AC Headlee at 157).

At the heels best they should have at least 4-5 individual first place winners at the tournament just for some perspective. But the coach has always said he believes in peaking in March during the national tournament, not in the first tournament of the year in November. Which I completely agree with. So while the results weren’t great at the first tournament, definitely nothing to worry over. The heels first dual meet is this Friday, November 8th in Ann Arbor against a loaded Michigan team. I’m hoping we can travel with our full starting roster. I’ll be sure to post results from the dual.
