The 8-0 Wake Forest Demon Deacons are ranked #10. That is certainly high enough now for them to all know that if they finish the season 12-0, a win in the ACC Championship Game could vault them into the playoffs.

Wake is the antithesis of UNC in a number of ways. Mack is all about recruiting, and Clawson is all about fundamentals and devising systems that force foes to do things they prefer not to do.

Will the home crowd matter at all?

Wake has pissed on our parade in fball plenty of times over the yrs. We owe them.

How good would it feel to be the ones to knock them out of their top ten?

Wake loves to beat UNC. It means more to them to beat UNC than to beat anybody else. I don't expect them to take this game lightly. And I do wonder if the loss to ND will leave a number of UNC players feeling like the season is largely over.

There is enough talent in Carolina Blue to win the game, but it has to be prepared for a full game in all parts of the game. I think it will be close.

i imagine the guys want to go to a bowl even though it will be a low tier bowl so they have to win a game they shouldn't down the stretch. that's what they have to play for. and other than sam i can't imagine anybody opting out (doubt sam would either).

I would be very disappointed in Sam if he were to opt out of a bowl. He has been nothing but a pure warrior determined to lead his team to victory.

i don't think he would @WoadBlue and agree with you. i was going from the perspective of 'who else on this team could possibly get drafted?'

It would feel like a shrug of the shoulders. We shouldn't be in a position to have to act like moo fans.

So you think players will opt out of the orange bowl, but not the whatever bowl brought to you by Jim's used cars? I think you're going to be disappointed.

It still amazes me that those 4 key players... FOUR!... quit on the team and cost us the game. Knowing it was the biggest bowl in school history, and quit on the team anyway. I just don't get it. Dazz Newsome had the right attitude- "No way I was going to miss that game!"

the guys who opted out are were the ones getting drafted. other than sam who do you think is going to be drafted on this team? why would you opt out if you're going to be on the team again next season - that makes absolutely no sense.

I was talking about Sam. That's who you brought up when you said I doubt he would.

i guess i misunderstood this post. i thought you were saying we would have players opting out of the bowl this season - assuming we make it to one. guys, more than just sam (who i still believe would play in a bowl game if we make one)

might be like the MooU game in 16. MooU is down and out, bad season, we beat them and they don't go bowling and Duhren is probably gone but we lay an egg and save their season and Duhren's job. Mack's job is NOT on the line but the rest is very similar. but like someone else posted in another thread - i'm not onboard with playing the spoiler or feeling good because we beat MooU. that's a stance that will ensure mediocrity forever

Our d cannot stop a cold.... Saw a podcast where a former UNC player really just laid into Mack and Bateman. Penalties, lack of discipline and focus are killing this team .THAT he says is on the coaching staff for allowing these mistakes to happen over and over with no consequences. If we miraculously do beat Wake, it will be because we simply outscore them...cause we ain't stopping them.

i think the no consequences is key here @keysersosay#1 - mack always talks about the locker room and the coaches might be creating a locker room issue. a talented young guy sitting the bench behind someone who is playing well might not be happy but will probably stick around and wait his turn. a talented young guy sitting the bench behind someone making the same mistakes game after game is probably going to be a locker room issue.

That same poster @tarheel0910 said we'd be a happier bunch accepting our perpetual mediocrity though. So F the high aspirations, i'll be very happy playing spoiler.

The past decade in CFB it is all about offense, teams are only as a good as their QB. Sam Hartman is having an amazing yr and Devin Leary is having a fantastic yr also - just two picks, tons of yards, plenty TDs. I'd LOVE to take those two victories despite our yr still sucking overall.

at some point we do need to decide if we're going to continue trying to wake up that sleeping giant or just let him sleep. if we want to turn the football season into a social event where we go to the games, tailgate, have fun, hope we win but not expect to then so be it. i can get onboard with that as long as we don't continue to tease that next season is going to be something more. schedule all weak teams out of conference, stop facility upgrades, take lower level coaches and cut back on the football program. it's the continued high expectations (not just by the fans and media) that make unc football so painful. and mack's memory is fading or he is telling a big lie if he thinks the fans and media were the only ones who set expectations too high this season. going into the season maybe he didn't think we were top 10 and maybe he knew we had some issues but there's no way in hell he thought we'd be struggling to get 6 wins this season and make a bowl game.

Shockingly you misunderstood and/or are lacking the ability to understand both of my posts.

Y'know... I think UNC is going to win. I dunno, it's just a feeling I have. UNC has a lot more to play for and a lot more riding on these last 4 games. And, after looking at Wake's schedule thus far, UNC is possibly the best team they've played. UNC just played Notre Dame. Wake had squeakers against Syracuse and Louisville. 4 other games were Norfolk State, Old Dominion, Duke, and Army. They also beat UVA and FSU. FSU has gotten better, so has UVA. The Heels beat UVA and... I can't explain the FSU game.

I'm a lot more optimistic than I was on Monday!

That 'mesh' rpo or whatever Wake is running is deadly. The only way we beat them IMO is if our offense is perfect and we win the TO battle bigly.

Here's a shock- UNC is FAVORED TO WIN by 2.5 points!
Yeah, I don't get it either. Seems like Vegas has a boner for the Heels all season (IIRC, we were 17.5 pt favorites vs fsu?). I get that it's all about where they want the money placed but have they seen our shitty defense play this year? 😒

That being said, UNC is probably the best team WF has played to date. If our offense can keep up we have a shot but it's gonna be another shootout like last year.

That mouthful you just said is what needs to be kept front and center by everyone who cares about UNC football. Being OK with playing spoiler guarantees mediocrity is your future.

You are what you do and what you tolerate. If you are not demanding changes and improvement in the wake of discernible mediocrity, then you are tolerating it. Over time, the mediocrity for which you make excuses, which you tolerate, becomes the definition of who you are.

You get used to being mediocre. It feels comfortable. Why upset so many people by cutting heads when it is far easier to accept 7-5 then 8-4 then 6-6 then 7-5 then 8-4 then 9-3 then 6-6 then 5-7, etc. ad infinitum?

That offense requires D players to be patient and to stay at home, stay in their lanes. And then make tackles.

I'm thinking one of those 56-51 kind of games, so it might turn out to be 28-27. But I do think it will be close.

The #10 team in the country, with an 8-0 record- Wake Forest- are 3 point underdogs!
Vegas oddsmakers look at all the UNC talent and assume that talent must reveal itself fully one day. The talent says that UNC should win.

you're 100% right @WoadBlue - i always say "Results Rarely Exceed Expectations"

You know, I've heard all season about "our talent, our talent." Maybe our problems are all on the coaches, but MAYBE, just MAYBE, we aren't as talented as we thought or wanted to think, especially on defense. Star ratings can be deceiving.

It's certainly not resulting in winning games.

I'd agree if those guys with all the stars beside their names were getting all the snaps.

To your point our upper classmen weren't part of great recruiting classes. Jahlil's biggest offer was app state, Vohasek's kansas, Tomari's was Iowa St, Tomon VT, Trey Morrison, Gemmel didn't have huge offers. Brian Anderson didn't have a big offer list, the other center is a walk-on, Mckethan had hardly any offers.
