In your opinion what do you think they are missing from this team that would have made them a consistent top 5 team.

A true point guard like a Ty Lawson who can penetrate to score, dump off to a big or kick out to a shooter like Wayne Ellington for the spot up 3. Seriously we need some perimeter shooting badly! It was so fun watching Reggie, PJ and Marcus rain in 3s a couple years ago

Different offensive sets from the start of the game and not at the end when we are losing by double digits. You can find missing links on every team in every sport, but champions play to their strengths and try to minimalize their weaknesses. John Tobben has a nice article here: http://tarheeldepot.com/real-problems-north-carolina/ which points out four of our problem areas. While there is little we can do at this point in the season to change the last two, our lack of dependable outside shooters and big men with limitations, Tobben clearly points out things we can do to help the first two problems. Paige is our best shooter and best offensive weapon. We need to find ways to get him more open looks from the start of the game. He's hobbled and being hounded which makes it more difficult for him to create on his own. We need to run multiple screens to get him open which will draw defenses away from the paint which should open up the middle too. We need to get JP to the rim in halfcourt sets as he will/can not shoot from the perimeter. With is athletism, he's perfect for pick and roll sets.
I realize that I am second guessing a HOF coach by suggesting he change his offensive system; but, winning 67% of our games and sitting in the middle of the pack in the ACC seems like big time underachievement for a team with their talent level. As I recall, Coach Smith changed his game plans to play to his team's strengths.

A Head Coach.

It was a JOKE .... given all the Roy-whining that took place this week. I'm one of his biggest defenders!

We're missing recruits - even Roy has said that ("I've missed 6 out of 8...") ..... the NCAA scandal is taking its toll.

UNC needs the NCAA to make a ruling and move on. They are purposely delaying their ruling because they know there isn't anything they can do, but they know their delay is hurting all major sports at UNC.

I believe this is exactly what is happening.

Anybody wishing this to be over in the next 6-8 months should set themselves for a disappointment . . we could very well be deep into the year 2016 before this is put behind us.

Another 3 point shooter, one as good as Paige was last year. And a third consistent outside shooter, even if his range stops at 18 feet.

A perimeter D stopper, or at least significantly improved team D on the perimeter.

Considerably more consistent presence at the 5 on both ends of the court.

In short, we need to be able to play smart half court basketball on both ends of the court.

That's why ND is #2 in the conference. The Irish start 5 guys who all expect to be 1st or 2nd round NBA picks.

And obvioulsy the only way UVA can be #2 in the country is to have that certain Lottery pick and 2 other certain 1st round picks and 4 or 5 other guys who should be 2nd round picks.

If the players are smart and hard-working, and the coaching staff is 1st rate, you can win the ACC and/or reach the Elite 8 without a single player who will be an NBA lottery pick.

More shooting. Toughness, both physical and mental. A leader on the floor who will get in someone's face.
Fire. The quality of not liking it when you get punched in the mouth, and the will to punch back.
Pride of uniform. Consistency of effort. Mean steak, and the alpha dog that instills it. The will to step on a team's
neck when you have them beaten. Danny Green. More shooting. Again.

Roy's never won big without NBA talent. I'm sure Roy can win like he did in Hansbrough's freshman season without the most stacked of rosters, but there's been a formula to the teams that win big in Roy's UNC career.

A speedy point guard, nba level talent, 3 point shooters.... Basically everything 05 and 09 teams had.

A George Lynch leader who is not scared to get in his teammates face when they are not pulling their weight and taking responsibility for their play.

Last year's Marcus Paige instead of this year's version and we'd be top 10ish without anything else changing.

Last year's Paige, a speedy point guard who can penetrate and create, a couple more 3 pt threats, and a rim protector/shot blocker and we'd be in the mix for the title.
