Lot of folks say they want to see more small ball, some love that we have even more length this coming season so why not play with that length? What style do YOU want to see from this next team?

Me, I want us to attack more on both ends and I think we have the depth to do just that. I want us in the running game and forcing the tempo to being white hot, speed the opponents up. When you have guys that LOVE to push the pace, to get in that up and down game, guys like Joel, Theo, 7th, Jalek, BRob, and Kenny if he is healthy, PLatek as well. Use em all, push the pace and bring in fresh legs in waves. Attack the basket on offense, don't let em get set, finish or kick, primary and secondary break em till they break.

On defense, again, we have the guys that will attack on defense, recall Joel hassling ball handles early last season 3/4 court so they thought about getting past mid court more than getting their team in an offensive set, I want to see that as a constant and not just from Joel. 7th would thrive in that, Kenny as well, I think BRob would, I know Theo would and Cam will when that pace is set. We have the bigs in Huffman, Brooks, Luke, and hopefully Manley and Walker to run the court and rebound.

I want to see us create back court turn overs, have them dragging so we can do what we used to do under Dean, win the last 5mins of every half because the other team has no legs. Pull the ball out of the basket on a made shot and still push it, clamp down and defend off our own made baskets, tire their ball handlers out physically and mentally! Switch token pressure to flat out hawking and trapping, keep them thinking what we will do rather than knowing what we will do and how to attack us.

Pace and Space with shooters. I like the small ball lineup also because teams won't be able to pick and roll us to death like they do at times with 2 true bigs on the floor.

For a lot of the reasons you mention I think the young Big who shows he can play defense within the team concept will garner the most PT. I say this because it is hard to run pressure out front without your reinforcements taking care of business. I doubt we'll see much if any 2-traditional-Bigs lineups --- unless Brooks steps up and shows he can play some 4 at a sufficient level --- and yeah, I think that small-ball will be used in a shock-troop fashion. That is another reason Kenny's health is so important. JB, KW and Theo can be utter terrors on the perimeter, and hopefully the younger guys will take the next step defensively.

I've said it before, I want to see more pressing.

We have so much speed and energy at point and wings that it seems a shame not to give that a shot. Just need for one of our big guys to run the court well and protect the rim.

Small ball up and down the court. We got so much speed and need to utilize it. Run the bigs of the other team to death.

Defensively I figure Roy will pressure as much as his defensive quickness, and depth, will allow. Offensively, I don't think one will see significant change. Roy has always been a push it up the court guy. Transition has always been his staple. And don't see him changing the go inside first theory that he has relied on most of his career, although I see it coming back out a lot more as he should be much more talented on the perimeter than in the lane.

Just a general note: we have to be much more efficient with our "first shot" offense this year. Last year we had the 131st TS% (FG% adjusted to value 3s and FTs). If we match that number this year, we will struggle, because there's basically no chance we're #1 in ORB% again. We may not be top-50.

So we have to get much better shots than we did last year. Fewer post-ups, fewer YOLO jumpers from non-shooters. More 3s, more hard drives to the basket to draw FTs.

If I were coach......

We would run a 4-out space the floor offense this season. I would have 3 "plus" shooters on the floor at all times (defining a "plus" shooter as someone I expect to shoot 37%+ from the 3-pt line), with the guys I'd consider plus shooters being Berry, Williams, Felton, Johnson, and Maye. Hopefully someone else can join them, but until then I'd want at least three of those guys in every lineup. Obviously Theo would play 30 minutes or so, meaning when he's in the game someone like Seventh cannot be in (because he, Theo, and a Center would violate my "3 shooter rule"). I believe this would produce the best offense, with Joel, Jalek, and Theo penetrating and then kicking to the open shooters on the perimeter. We would run very few post ups with this team, as Luke is not a guy I want doing that and (barring a surprise) the freshmen aren't really either.

When Luke is resting I'd typically play Theo and Cam at the 4 and go small. At the 5 I'd focus primarily on defense and rebounding to determine who starts. Jalek would sub for Berry when Theo is in, otherwise Seventh could play point with Jalek sliding to the 2. Cam and Theo start at the wings, with Kenny and possibly B-Rob being the top backup.

We have enough depth I'd rotate a lot and play aggressive defense. A fair amount of trapping and full court pressure would be involved, especially against teams with spotty ball-handling. On offense push the ball, run through typical UNC sets, and run pick-and-roll a lot for Berry. Luke would be a perfect pop partner, and perhaps one of the freshman bigs can be a good roll guy. Lots of off-ball screens too given our plethora of shooters.

Minutes distribution would be something like:

PG: Berry 30, Felton 7, Woods 3
SG: Pinson 15, Williams 13, Felton 8, Woods 4
SF: Johnson 15, Robinson 10, Pinson 10, Williams 5
PF: Maye 25, Johnson 12, Pinson 3
C: Freshman bigs 40 (could experiment with really small lineups with Maye/Johnson at center against the right teams)

These would be my strategies and minutes for a competitive ACC game mind-you. When playing a low-level team I'd put guys in different spots to increase learning opportunities and experiment with new potential solutions, as well as give the starters a bit more rest.

I like it. Although I'd want to try to get Felton at least 20 minutes - if not closer to 25. I assume those would come at the expense of Williams/Woods/Robinson. Maybe knock each of them down 2-3 minutes to find that extra time for Jalek.

As far as contributors, I look for Woods to take a real step forward this year. He has all of the tools, and his quickness and speed are off the charts. Felt that last year he often pushed the envelope a bit too hard when he got minutes instead of letting the game flow.

Roy ball! Tempo first, second, and last! Get up lots of shots and fight for boards, I disagree that this team couldn't be a rebounding force; matching last year would be tough for anyone though. Since I expect us to shoot a higher % from the perimeter, I expect we don't need to match last year's Offensive reb numbers, but we really need to focus more on defensive rebs! High level, ball hawking D should be our staple as well. I would love to see even more traps, jump switches, and 3/4 D!

This season will be very exciting as the vets in the back court leade our yougsters back to our normal accomplishments! (1-3, ACC; High Tourney Seed, and regional finals at least!)

IIRC, Brandon was the best outside shooter we had coming out of HS. We didn't see that as a frosh but the tiny bit I saw in the alumni clip looked promising. Assuming his shot shows up and Kenny is 100%...

Berry
Kenny
Brandon
Cam
Luke

They could all be 40% shooters. Shoot, crash the boards, kick out, shoot, crash the boards, kick out....

Sub Sterling or Huff for Kenny, and we go from a small team to a large one, and gain rim protection. Yet still have 4 40% shooters from deep.

And, gosh, suppose Kenny or Brandon aren't shooting 40% or Berry needs a rest. Then you try Jalek or Andrew.

Defense could be a problem.

This wouldn't be my preferred lineup, of course. But could be good fun for a few minutes each half or as a change of pace any time things aren't going well.

Then there's the "hammer" team

Berry
Seventh
Theo
Huff
Sterling

Big, strong and tough. Facing a team that's getting too physical? A few minutes against that lineup and they'll be whimpering.

Or the"We will take your lunch and make you watch us eat it" lineup!
I saw Berry and TP in that lineup so I think we will be just fine!

Yup, that group has one shooter, but 3 natural scorers! But it probably will never see the court for any significant length of time. Could be used as a defensive stopper line for short stints though if Manley and Huff get up to speed on D. Substitute Brooks for either big and you have another pretty interesting group!

I really want this lineup:

Rush
Miller
Brooks
Manley
Huffman

I know it looks bad on paper, but nobody has any idea whether it's likely to be successful without literally knowing the future.

Your Man of Straw dost not distract from paucity of your arguments good sirrah!

My argument is that a lineup that features only one shooter, our worst offensive player from last year (Seventh, with a TS% of 38.4% and a TO% of 34.6%), and two freshmen bigs ranked #195 and #263 is likely to struggle to score. It's always possible it'll somehow work, but it's not likely.

But per DSouthr, nobody can predict a lineup will struggle unless they know the future.

That lineup would potentially be great on defense (although I'm afraid of putting two raw, slow-footed freshmen bigs out there), but the offense would almost certainly be awful. Defense-only lineups don't tend to succeed.

So you already know that line up would not be able to score by mid season? Any feelings on the power ball numbers for next week?

Saying predicting that lineup won't score to predicting the powerball is a rather juvenile comparison to say the least. Simply using some insight and relatively mediocre basketball knowledge anyone can say with some pretty good certainty that that particular lineup in question would really struggle on the offensive end. I'm not even sure it's a debate.

This is actually a good argument with excellent points. The previous post was simply not.

Defensive lineups are used for defense and protecting leads! But, I don't agree with the premise that perimeter shooting % is the only important measure of offensive ability. Slashing, passing, and dribble penetration can also lead to scoring. This is why I emphasized scoring over shooting. If the lineup in question can protect the rim; tire peeps out with banging and in your face D; and slash to the hole to collect fouls and/or score some they can be an effective change of pace. Many times coaches will sub in a defender on D and and offensive player on O in end of half/game situations. This happens often so the lineup is not without worth even if it is very unlikely!

"rather juvenile"? Is it not possible for you to discuss your attempted point without finding some way to be disrespectful to another's point of view?

"Simply using some insight and relatively mediocre basketball knowledge anyone can say with some pretty good certainty", were these the same folks that were saying our 2015 recruiting class was a total bust when all we got was Luke and Kenny? Were the anyones you refer to the same folks that knew Luke would never be a factor for us, those folks? There were and usually are with our players, huge leaps in their game from frosh to soph season.

Berry
Seventh
Theo
Huff
Sterling

And yet this is the line up you say can not score, Berry can and will with no debate needed. Theo is not a pure jump shooter but Theo is a slasher/scorer and will be called on to do more of that. His jump shooting simply has to improve marginally to create room for him to drive. But even if he doesn't, his length allows him to facilitate over less long defenders creating easy scoring ops for his mates. Anyone disputing that simply needs to go back and watch his last 3 yrs at UNC and have someone explain the game if they do not see what Theo can bring to the offensive end.

7th, you assume that because he did not score much last season that the same must be true for the coming season. Much the same as folks saying last year this time Kenny could not shoot because he was 1-13 from trey as a frosh, now who is saying that?

In HUff and Sterling you have a 6'9"motor physically strong kid that has worked this entire off season with Rasheed, learning to play at this level. IN Sterling you have a 6'10" kid with solid reach that was projected to be 4-5 star after a frosh season that did not hit that mark due to 2 big time injuries (broken legs).

So my point was not to be a smart arse when I referred to the crystal ball, it was to reflect that what you think this lineup would miss on may very well be very solid and this would be an excellent defensive lineup even if the scoring is limited. 2 ways to win, score more than the others guys or score something and don;t let the other guys do that.

That will work. On offense you just space them out from halfcourt to rim and they hand the ball from guy to guy until the one at the rim dunks it. Easy. ;)

On D you play some sort of trick zone and hope the other team can't hit from deep very well.

Have heard of twin towers and even the occasional triple tower line up but this would be a quad-tower look? LOL
