For five years, a haze of scandal has hung around the athletic department at North Carolina. From the initial violations related to agent involvement with football players, it spread, eventually uncovering an academic fraud scheme that covered nearly two decades.

A football coach, an athletic director, a chancellor and the school's sterling reputation were among the casualties of the saga.

There was a round of NCAA sanctions for improper benefits three years ago, two internal investigations into academic irregularities and a seemingly endless supply of media scrutiny and social media sniping.

But the episode appears to be nearing its conclusion.

With that in mind, here's a look at what we know and what we will know soon enough.
