On this day in 1797 Congress appropriated $44,000 to build a lighthouse at Cape Hatteras. Construction did not begin until 1799 and the tower was finally lit in 1803. The structure was made of sandstone and was 90 ft. tall. In 1853 the lighthouse was remodeled to a height of 150 ft. Eventually the present day Cape Hatteras Lighthouse replaced the early structure in 1870. The new tower was painted in 1873 with the black and white spiral pattern.
