I know the Heels then had many great ones but to me Ed Cota handle was the best of any point guard that I watched play at UNC.

I would have to say Shaun Livingston is the best ballhandling PG that almost played in the ACC. You need to see the clip of him "handling" Nowitzki.

Ed Cota.

Phil Ford was before my time, but in my lifetime - Ed Cota.

Ty was probably the fastest PG with the ball I've ever seen. His passing was not always great but he could get the ball up and down the floor.

Best passer was Cota, hands down.

Kenny Smith is probably my favorite PG to play at UNC.

Ford was the better PG.

Cota was the best ball-handler . . he was second only to that kid named Maravich.

I saw the Subject of this thread and just had to laugh. Kind of like asking, "What UNC Player went on to have the best NBA career"

Ball handlers, well if we are talking about purely with the dribble, it to me is a very close call between Phil and Ty, booth to me were dribble masters, TY was quicker and certainly faster but Phil was so crafty, the game was over when the ball went in to Phil's hands and he raised those 4 fingers, you may as well have run the game clock down to zero because that game was over and the Heels had already won.

As a passer, honestly, a 3 way real close call between Phil, Kendal, and Cota. Kenny & Derrick Phelps were not far behind either but the first 3 were amazing passers and I wouldn't want to make a living off of the difference between them in this aspect, just note Phil is at the top in either of these aspects of a ball handler. As a QB floor general, I loved all the names I have mentioned for this final aspect of a ball handler but Phil Ford was the PERFECT definition of floor general, leader, put the ball in his hands when the game is close, in any aspect you can consider.

As much as so many hated the lack of a shot clock you can not really grasp how much harder it was for Phil, you just had to experience it at the time to really appreciate how amazing a player Phil really was, he was an extention of Dean Smith on the floor and he had both the desire & ability to execute what ever needed to occur. Lots of great players have come & gone thru UNC but IMO I don't think we will EVER see another Phil Ford, he was is & will always be Mr UNC to me.

For your viewing pleasure below. Easy Ed Cota was definitely arguably the best ball handling we have seen along with Phil, but you really can't deny that he is the greatest passer to ever play at UNC as evidence by the video below. Amazing to think we had the best passer and best dunker in the history of the program playing together at the same time.

Enjoy!

Easy Does It! Ed Cota Highlight Mix!

Although we had many....Ray Felton, Ty Law, Kenny Smith, Phil Ford, Jimmy Black, Ed Cota "with the Flota". The list can go on with solid guy that consistently finish the fast break, make nice backdoor passes, finish the half court set play without turning the ball over. Phil Ford was the reason I started follow UNC back in the day. I've seen them all from back then to now. My favorite would be Phil, Kenny and Ed....in that order. You can argue the case for any of them being the best of the best.

Ed Cota may not have been the PG, but I would have to say his ballhandling abilities were second to none.

Now his shooting, on the other hand.............

When crowning the best at anything, you can ask the question "What player changed the game in their eras"?....You can name a few....Maravich, Jabbar, Thompson and Ford. Most recently Anthony Davis of Kentucky.

Phil Ford running away.
