Ty Lawson--'09 it wouldn't have happened without that guy..he seems to be forgotten sometimes when you think about finishing a March run like he did..I know we had #50 but without Ty, no way...

Ed Cota. Steady. Playmaker. Looked to pass first but could score if the team needed it. For both Dean and Roy that's been the epitome of the Carolina point guard and the gold standard for college hoops. I never worried when the ball was in Ed's hands.

Either Easy Ed or Jimmy Black. Maybe more Jimmy Black because look what his teams did but folks never really seem to talk about him much. Now going back a few years Steve Hale was outstanding for us but is rarely discussed.

Steve Previs

Steve never got the credit he deserved, but, when you have great talents like George Karl, Bill Chamberlain, Dennis Wuycik and Bob McAdoo on the starting squad with you, that is certainly understandable.

I'll take some heat for this, but Larry Brown for no other reason than he gets it just by definition. Everybody underestimates the extent, value and importance that Larry had as the first point guard under Dean. First Tar Heel basketball player to play in the Olympics (1964 gold medalist in Tokyo) • Was leading scorer (16.5) in Dean Smith's first season as head coach • Earned All-ACC honors in 1962-63.

Steve Hale was my first favorite player and doesn't get much love. I remember being stunned to realize he wasn't going to be playing for Carolina (or anyone for that matter) upon his graduation.

Good pick. Dr. Hale does get a lot of love when the subject of great UNC defensive guards arises from time to time, he is almost always mentioned, and rightly deserves to be.

One of my all time favs as well.

Give 'em Hale . . !

Scott Cherry.

Each and every time I see the name "Scott Cherry" I think of the time Dean played him and other "Blue" team members in the '93 Championship Game. I can still see him dribbling the ball and thinking to myself......"COACH! WHAT ARE YOU DOING? GOD, PLEASE DON'T TURN THE BALL OVER!"

Dean's strategy didn't exactly backfire and I remember feeling bad afterwards for thinking what I did. That was until I read MJ pretty much said the same thing ;)

In stories and writeups this guys name is almost never highlighted to where its clickable to lead to his stats and or his story. Im talking in espn and national writings. His name is rarely mentioned with our top players and performers. Its frustrating to witness. I do realize hes not the best, now or ever was, but all these other pgs getting love in todays game is CRAP. Keep driving the bus Mr. Berry. Keep drivin.

Certainly not the "best," but if we're talking underrated, I'd add Dick Grubar to the list.
