Will Shaver Out For The Season

Really sucks for him. The biggest thing holding him back from playing time is his conditioning. He's the slowest guy on the court every time he plays. He needs to reshape his body, he needs to improve his lateral quickness, he needs to improve his stamina. This injury is a major setback for that.

I don’t get the shaver hate… sure, he’s not UNC starter material, but he obviously wants to be a heel, and maybe for some kids that’s enough.

UNC basketball history is filled with guys who’ve stayed with the team for 4yrs, backed up the stars and provided the unselfish presence that no team will get from a top 100 talent.

I used to say the same about Desmond Hubert, Joel James, mike Copeland, Byron sanders etc etc.

The roster can’t all be top 4-5* talent.

He can definitely have that type of role, maybe more at some point down the road ? Just thinking he may want a larger role, and is a candidate for the portal at some point as well.

I pray the youngster heals swiftly and completely!

He is Family and a great addition to the team! Thanks for your dedication, Mr. Shaver!

100% to all of this. And it's not like Hubert is giving him significant minutes compared to some of the other guys named. Hubert has shown himself a capable recruiter so far, so the days of praying bench players turn into starters should be over.

Like you said, every player on the roster isn't going to be a 4 or 5 star.

Seems a clear cut candidate for Medical Redshirt as Dtodd said! I love having him around because he really leads by example and pushes peeps in practice.

I wouldn't call it hate for the kid, I think it is simple assessment with the feeling that there are a lot of programs he could go to where he would maybe be a starter, at least get solid PT and many, myself included do not really see that as a reality for him at UNC. Now don't confuse this, I am not in any way advocating for the kid to leave, not wanting him in any way to be pushed out the door. Just saying if that is what he decides to do and I think he will at some point, I would not blame him or suggest it was a bad decision.

I would also add, the portal has really changed the calculus, made it harder for a guy like Will to get the court time to develop. Coaches can jump in to the portal and grab a more developed and proven guy to fill in need areas like we just did with nance. Who would you rather see play for us this season, Will or Pete, easy answer is Pete but look at the developmental minutes Shaver could have got had Nance not come to us? How about now we have NIL keeping a guy like Bacot around where before he would have likely been gone this season. The portal and NIL have changed the way coaches build their teams, Dean didn't have to worry about that, Roy didn't for the vast majority of his career.
