NOTRE DAME, Ind. --- Kyle Richardson's first career home run was a game-winner as Notre Dame completed a three-game sweep with an 8-7 win over No. 20 North Carolina Sunday at Frank Eck Stadium. Carolina ran out to a 6-0 lead but the Irish hit five home runs and kept the Tar Heels off the scoreboard over the final six innings to complete the comeback.
Carolina (31-19, 13-13 ACC) touched Notre Dame starter Nick McCarty for seven runs over 2.2 innings to take a 7-3 lead, but five Irish relievers combined to silence the UNC bats. Brad Bass (3-0) got the final two outs of the the ninth to get the win, while Trent Thornton (3-5) took the loss after surrendering the home run to Richardson.
Tyler Ramirez opened the scoring in the first with his seventh home run of the year before Bolt's two-out grand slam pushed the Carolina advantage to 6-0.
Notre Dame (33-18, 15-12 ACC) cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the second on Zak Kutsulis' first of two home runs off Benton Moss, but the Tar Heels added another run in the third. Korey Dunbar led off the inning with a double and scored on a sac fly when Joe Dudek's blast to left center was caught by Mac Hudgins.
But that would all for the UNC offense, as Matt Ternowchek, Evy Ruibal, Connor Hale, Sean Guenther and Bass combined to allow just three hits over 5.2 scoreless innings.
Cavan Biggio led off the Notre Dame eighth with a home run off Thornton to make it 7-6, and Kyle Fiala followed with a triple that just eluded the grasp of Bolt in deep left center. Fiala scored on a chopper to first to tie it before Richardson won it with two gone in the ninth.
