We are 50 days from the start of the CFB season, so I'll start the Coaching Carousel thread!

In 2020, the first coach fired himself after week 1 (Jay Hopson, So Miss), and in 2021, the first firing was week 1 (but really the 2nd week of play, as there was a "week 0") when UConn finally fired Randy Edsall.

There were lots of changes last year, but it became the "Year of Promoting Assistants." 29 changes last cycle, with many of the big schools, like ND, promoting assistants, which kept the carousel from coming off of its axel!

A recap of the last few years:

22 (2008)
23 (2009)
24 (2010)
28 (2011)
31 (2012) *highest number of changes
20 (2013)
15 (2014) **lowest number of changes
29 (2015)
21 (2016)
21 (2017)
28 (2018)
24 (2019) 12 in P5
17 (2020) 8 in P5
29 (2021) 13 in P5

The Scoop began tracking these in 2008, and the 2021 cycle raised the average slightly, to 23.7; the average for the 10 years rose slightly to 23.5. The 10 year average is likely to drop after the upcoming cycle, because the highest year will drop off, and, except for 2011 to 2012, anytime there has been a high year, the next year is lower.

Conference number changes from last year, as a reminder:

P5
PAC12 4 (of 12)
ACC 4 (of 14)
Big12 3 (of 10)
SEC 2 (of 14)
Big 10 - none

G5

MWC 4 (of 12)
SBC 3 (of 10)
MAC 2 (of 12)
CUSA 2 (of 14)
AAC 1 (of 11)

Among the independents, 4 of 7 changed coaches (ND, New Mexico St, UConn, and UMass)
