The phrase itself came about in the 1800s England where wives of sailors bought goods and the merchants agreed to wait for payment when the sailors came back home with money. The wives would tell the merchant that her husband was on a ship and that ship had left port, it had sailed and the merchant was to late to get paid then, he had to wait until the ship returned to port. Now days it is a common expression of saying "it is to late". I like using it in reference to UNC because of the old Pilot Life insurance commercials that used to sponsor ACC basketball games, the theme song for those commercials was "sail with the Pilot".
