It’s time to start the first round of voting for the Chester Bennington Region. You will have 48 hours to make your selection before voting closes. I’ll give a brief rundown of each band and include my vote in a spoiler alert.

1 David Bowie- With over 140 million albums sold Ziggy Stardust takes the top spot. Considered a pioneer of glam rock, he has influenced countless bands with his music and concerts.

16 Frank Zappa- In addition to being known as a great musician, Zappa produced almost 60 albums in his lifetime. Even though he wasn’t as commercially successful as his peers, he is consider by many to be a major influence in their music career.

Going with Ziggy on this one. Bowie was just too good of a performer to lose this matchup.

2 Smashing Pumpkins- Fronted by Billy Corgan, one of the most recognizable voices of his generation, SP was known for having a guitar heavy sound. They recorded critically acclaimed albums such as “Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness” and “Siamese Dream.”

15 Radiohead- How about another English rock band? Their debut single “Creep,” instantly became a worldwide hit and helped them become a household name. Their music has been both critically and commercially successful.

Even though my rage is gone and I’m out of my cage, Smashing Pumpkins was just too big a part of my youth to vote against them.

3 R.E.M.- Considered a pioneer of alternative rock, R.E.M. made a name for themselves by touring extensively and their support of college radio. They have become one of the best-selling bands of all time with more than 85 million albums sold.

14 Peter Gabriel- Gabriel rose to fame as the lead singer of Genesis. In addition to being a world famous singer he also co-founded OD2, one of the first online music download services.

Tough call for me. While I enjoy Gabriel’s solo work, I like his Genesis stuff better. R.E.M. gets my vote.

4 Red Hot Chili Peppers- Known for their sock wearing and funk rock sound, the Peppers are one of the most successful bands of all time. They’ve sold over 80 million albums, won six Grammy Awards and hold records for most #1 singles and top ten songs on the alternatives songs chart.

13 Talking Heads- As one of the most celebrated bands of the 70’s and 80’s Talking Heads grab the 13 seed. Many artists have listed them as an influence with Radiohead taking their name from the Talking Heads song “Radio Head.”

No scar tissue hear. I’m voting for Red Hot Chili Peppers. Too many big hits to lose.

5 Incubus- With their unique sound many critics have label them as hard to classify, but praise the band’s ambition. Their breakout hit “Drive,” off of the album “Make Yourself,” helped them obtain mainstream recognition.

12 Cure- The Cure were one of the first alternative bands to chart and have success before alternative rock became mainstream. Despite the band only having one constant member, Robert Smith, they have influenced many bands with their style.

The Cure probably wishes I was here, but I’m going with Incubus on this one.

6 Genesis- One of the most successful bands, their estimated sales are over 100 million worldwide. They have produced two of the biggest names in rock music, Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by Phish guitarist, Trey Anastasio.

11 Rush- From our neighbors up north, Rush is known for their complex compositions with irregular and shifting time signatures. They are estimated to have sold over 65 million albums.

Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel? I’m going with Genesis. Come at me.

7 Papa Roach- In a somewhat surprising 7 seed, Papa Roach came onto the scene with their album “Infest.” While they initially started out using rap in some of their songs, they have evolved into a more traditional rock sound.

10 Yes- Yep, you guessed it. Yes is an English rock band. Known for their progressive sound, they have become one of the most successful and influential bands of the genre.

”Infest” was just straight up awesome in my teenage years. I’ve got to give a shout out to Papa Roach on this one.

8 Korn- Known for the distinctive vocals of Jonathan Davis, Korn lit the world on fire with the album “Follow the Leader.” They are considered one of the pioneers of nu metal and redefined the definition of ADIDAS.

9 Linkin Park- Lead by Chester Bennington, LP has sold over 68 million albums worldwide and won two Grammy awards. Their debut album, “Hybrid Theory,” helped them to become an immediate success.

This is probably the toughest matchup for me. They both played a big part in my teenage years and both have a very unique sound. I’m giving the edge to Korn based on their body of work.

David Bowie -- I literally don't know who Frank Zappa is.

Radiohead -- I enjoy Raidohead's self-deprecating introspective lyrics

3 R.E.M.
-- don't know who Peter Gabriel is. R.E.M. is aight.

Red Hot Chili Peppers

Incubus
-- Even though Brandon is a hippie, Incubus rocks. Love their heavier / more uptempo stuff (Certain Shade of Green, Anna Molly, Nice to Know You, The Warmth, etc.) but dislike when they slow it way down (e.g. Love Hurts).

Rush -- My vision of Hell is being chained down and forced to listen to Genesis on repeat.

Papa Roach

Korn
-- ETA: listened to "Beat it Upright" and "Right Now" while working out this morning. Changing my vote to Korn.

Oh, I had never heard of Genesis either, so this is starting to make more sense.

don't know who Peter Gabriel is.

My vision of Hell is being chained down and forced to listen to Genesis on repeat.
I would like to make some sort of clever comment here, but I am legitimately too saddened to think of anything. You don't know who Frank Zappa and Peter Gabriel are? Like, never even heard of them? WTF.

Also, please list all the Genesis songs you know. I'm curious, really. And yes, I'm hammering you during this contest because you are revealing that you have possibly the worst taste in music ever. (We'll always have MTB though.)

16 Frank Zappa - Prolific, virtuoso, not for everyone. My kinda guy.

15 Radiohead - It's absolutely criminal that they barely made this tournament. One of the most influential and progressive bands of my generation.

14 Peter Gabriel - R.E.M. is good but boring. Gabriel's body of work, both with Genesis and as a solo musician, was incredibly innovative. He's one of my favorite musicians of all time.

13 Talking Heads - Underdogs are on a roll.

5 Incubus - I like them better than the Cure so okay.

6 Genesis - The first band I ever truly fell in love with. While they skewed commercial towards the end of their existence, their early work is incredibly complex and dynamic in ways you just don't find from many bands. Probably my top 3 favorite bands.

10 Yes - In case it's not already clear, I enjoy progressive rock.

8 Korn - Meh.

Not even trying to be clever or funny, I've never heard a Frank Zappa or Peter Gabriel song (if I have, I didn't know it was them). To be honest, I thought both or at lease one of them are actors.

As for Genesis, I watched some weird documentary on Phil Collins once and it had a ton of footage from his Genesis days. The weird costumes tripped me out and I didn't like the music at all. Could've been that most of the video clips were live, so maybe they sounded way worse than studio quality? It all felt like a bad acid clip.

And yes, I'm hammering you during this contest because you are revealing that you have possibly the worst taste in music ever. (We'll always have MTB though.)
My music taste isn't bad; it's just eclectic. And there's not like a specific rhyme or reason to it. Like the old SCOTUS opinion on porn, my liking of bands/songs is "I know it when I hear it." I can never pidgeonhole myself as "oh I'm a country guy" because there's plenty of country I don't like. Same for metal, punk, and every other genre.

That's kind of the point. The music isn't supposed to be catchy or accessible. You have to really listen to it to appreciate it.

Don't say that. It's the worst possible response anyone can give when describing their taste in music. I'm being serious here. I want to punch people in the face when they tell me that.

*Oh jeez I don't know either of those guys either, but I should probably just keep that to myself since this RH guy seems to know his shit when it comes to music*

13 Talking Heads

Nevermind, he's a phony.

Come on, bud. You're gonna give me this lecture when some of my favorite bands past and present (Manchester Orchestra, Thursday, Minus the Bear, The Turnpike Troubadours, Cursive, etc.) all make music, to varying degrees, that's not very accessible to radio play or "casual" music fans.

It's not like I'm sitting here jamming exclusively to Top 40 or something.

I know your music taste well and would describe it as quite eclectic.

1 David Bowie-Easy. Crazy strong one seed.

15 Radiohead

3 R.E.M.-Crush With Eyeliner an all time favorite song of mine.

13 Talking Heads-Chili Peppers suck.

12 Cure-I don't like either but my wife loves The Cure so here you go.

6 Genesis

10 Yes-Don't care for either but an ex who was psychotic was all into Papa Roach.

9 Linkin Park

Say it to my face.

Lol. My wife loves them. I just never could tolerate much of anything they did. Sometimes one of their songs would be ok the first few times I heard it. They always got continually worse though.

Yeah, I'm busting your chops a bit here. But now this feels like a challenge. Like I need to create a college-esque "Genesis Music Appreciation" class for you.

I know your music taste well and would describe it as quite eclectic.
Maybe, but I would never say that. It's cliche and pretentious. "I like rap AND country!" Ugh.
