2015 All-ACC Academic Men's Basketball Team Announced
North Carolina junior Marcus Paige is named Prosser Award Recipient
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com)- The University of North Carolina's Marcus Paige, a two-time second-team CoSIDA Academic All-America selection and the recipient of the 2015 Skip Prosser Award, headlines the annual All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Men's Basketball team, as announced today by Commissioner John Swofford.
To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.
The Skip Prosser Award is presented annually to the top scholar-athlete in ACC men's basketball. It is named in memory of Wake Forest head basketball coach George Edward "Skip" Prosser, who passed away on July 26, 2007. Prosser compiled a 291-146 career record in 14 seasons as a head coach, including a 126-68 mark in his six years with Wake Forest. Every Wake Forest senior he coached graduated, and the Deacons placed nine players on the annual All-ACC Academic Basketball Team during his tenure.
To be nominated for the Skip Prosser Award, a student-athlete must be an upperclassman with a grade-point average of 3.0 or better - both in his career and in the previous two semesters. Sixty percent of the award is based on academic achievement and 40 percent on athletic accomplishments.
Clemson guard Cliff Hammonds (2008), Miami guard Jack McClinton (2009), Virginia center Jerome Meyinsse (2010), North Carolina center Tyler Zeller (2011 and 2012), Duke center Mason Plumlee (2013) and Pitt guard Cameron Wright (2014) are past Skip Prosser Award recipients.
Paige, a 6-1, 175-pound junior from Marion, Iowa, leads the 19th-ranked Tar Heels in scoring (13.2), assists (4.4), steals (1.5) and minutes played (32.2) while starting all 30 games. The Journalism and Mass Communications/History double major currently ranks second among current ACC players in career 3-point field goals made (200), third in assists (436) and fifth in points scored (1,279).
On Feb. 26, Paige was named to the Capital One Academic All-America Division I men's basketball second team for the second consecutive year, joining fellow 2015 All-ACC Academic Team member Wayne Blackshear of Louisville as one of two ACC student-athletes selected.
"I am so proud of Marcus for excelling academically at a great University, as a basketball player in the most challenging conference in the country and as a first-class individual." said North Carolina head coach Roy Williams. "He embraces the various opportunities he has as a student-athlete as much as anyone I have coached and is someone who continues to learn and develop each day in all aspects of his life. We all miss Skip Prosser, but he would be proud of a young man like Marcus Paige who embodies his spirit and passion to excel."
Headed by Louisville sophomore Terry Rozier, who is currently fourth in the ACC in scoring (17.4) and second in steals (2.0), six of academic honorees are averaging in double figures.
Duke freshman Tyus Jones is second in the ACC in assists (5.7) and free throw percentage (.876) while Pittsburgh's James Robinson is third in assists (5.1), assists to turnover ratio (3.08:1) and fourth in free throw percentage (.830).
Louisville's Montrezl Harrell ranks third in the ACC in rebounds (9.3), field goal percentage (.573) and eighth in scoring (15.4).
Harrell and Rozier have been selected ACC Player of the Week twice this season while Clemson's Jordan Roper was named once. Duke's Tyus Jones (3) and Justise Winslow (1), have combined for four ACC Rookie of the Week honors.
Paige and Duke's Amile Jefferson each earned a spot on the league's academic honor team for the third time in their respective careers. Earning academic recognition for a second time are Virginia Tech's Christian Beyer and Will Johnston, Clemson's Jordan Roper and Pittsburgh's Cameron Wright.
