ACC football: UNC, Duke, N.C. State face hurdles - Charlotte Observer
Dave Doeren was asked about N.C. State's chances to be a contender for the ACC title Thursday at the Pigskin Preview luncheon. Doeren, who inherits a 7-6 team and needs to replace seven starters on offense and another six on defense, responded with a question of his own. "You talking about this year?" Doeren said.

DeCock: Controversial ACC - Notre Dame affiliation already paying dividends - Charlotte Observer
While the grumbling continues both inside (Mike Krzyzewski) and outside (Steve Spurrier) the ACC over Notre Dame's unique status as a half-member, let's be perfectly clear about one thing: The ACC is getting something out of this, too. The agreement that allowed Notre Dame the benefits of ACC membership while retaining football independence was the only way Notre Dame would join a conference at this point. It was controversial. It was unusual. It was one-sided in Notre Dame's favor. It was contrary to decades of ACC tradition. It was a massive coup for the conference.

Hairston case reflects larger college athletics picture - Durham Herald-Sun
UNC basketball star P. J. Hairston is in the clear on the criminal charges from an arrest in early June. It's a relief to Hairston, I'm sure. And if, as seems apparent, the legal system moved swiftly and correctly to treat him no differently ? no more harshly, no more leniently ? because of his high public profile, that's fine. But Hairston's troubles ? and those of basketball coach Roy Williams and his bosses at UNC ? are far from over.

Ackley starting to heat up at the plate - MLB
Dustin Ackley has seen a dramatic rise in his batting results since the All-Star break, with the young center fielder hitting .421 in his last six starts going into Friday's game against the Twins. That's a welcome turnabout for the 2009 first-round Draft pick, who was sent down to Triple-A Tacoma after batting .204 in the first two months. He's hit .270 (17-for-63) with six doubles and nine RBIs since he was recalled on June 25.

Quinton Coples Displays Plenty of Giddyup - New York Jets
Enzo Quarterback Geno Smith takes the snap and rolls out to his left on a bootleg pass play. Defensive end Quinton Coples is across the line of scrimmage watching his every move. His assignment on the play: contain Smith. Given Geno's reputation for using his speed to evade defenders ? he runs a sub-4.6 in the 40 ? Coples has been given no easy task. Smith begins to hustle toward the left sideline, now sprinting toward the outside, keeping his eyes downfield, looking to make a pass all the while.

Browns: Greg Little growing into lead receiver role - News-Herald
Little by little, Greg Little is maturing into one of the leaders in the Browns' receiving corps. The third-year player from North Carolina put in more time this offseason preparing for what lies ahead than in either of the previous two summers, and that work was reflected in the first two days of training camp.
