UNC-UNC-W

UNC-W roughs up Hunter Williams but UNC still leads 5-4. Top of the 4th. Kelley relieved Williams.

UNC-W fouls off three bunt attempts for the first out. A little surprising they let him try a third.

Heels were ahead in the count 2-2 but a ball and stolen base result in an intentional walk.

Runners at 1st and 2nd, 1 out, and UNC will go to the bullpen again with the game tied at 5 in the bottom of the 10th.

The Tar Heels will be going with Trent Thornton here. He has been thrust into a lot of tight spots this season.

The at-bat opens with an 0-2 count before a slow roller to shortstop results in out #2 but moves the runners. Men on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs. Here we go!

And AGAIN Thornton is up 0-2. Then 2 straight balls to even the count. Fouled off and it's deja vu from the last at-bat.

Ground ball to 2nd, Sutherland bobbles it but recovers, and we're going to the 11th inning.

I really wanted to get a good night's sleep tonight.

Ground out, then Bolt rips one to RF. The RFer takes a great angle on the ball, though, and makes a terrific throw to 2nd base for the second out.

Mike Fox takes exception to the call and he has been ejected from the game. I thought it looked like a good play, but the UNC-W announcers mention that several calls have gone against the Tar Heels, many of them coming from the same umpire.

Another ground ball ends the Heels' chances and they go on the defensive again.

Of course the message boards went down in the midst of a crazy series of events.

Thornton retired the side. Ramirez led off with a single for UNC, then scored after a sac bunt, a couple wild pitches, and a balk. Heels were able to put runners on 2nd and 3rd leading 6-5 but couldn't bring them home.

UNC-W got their own runner to 3rd (two uncontested stolen bases) but Thornton struck out the final batter to win it for UNC, 6-5.

Up next is the weekend series against Boston College starting on Friday evening. Go Heels!

From UNC Athletics:

WILMINGTON, N.C. --- Tyler Ramirez singled and scored on a balk in the top of the 12th to give No. 18 North Carolina a 6-5 win over No. 22 UNCW Wednesday night at Brooks Field. Trent Thornton struck out Joe Bertone with the tying run on third to end it after almost five hours, giving UNC a third consecutive win before a weekend series with Boston College starting Friday in Chapel Hill. Brian Miller had three hits and scored two runs as the Tar Heels improved to 26-15 and snapped the Seahawks' 10-game winning streak.
