Carolina Set To Renew Rivalry With Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. --- No. 13 North Carolina faces its most familiar baseball opponent in a critical ACC series when the Tar Heels visit No. 25 Virginia starting Friday at 6 p.m. at Davenport Field. Friday will mark the 293rd meeting between the two storied programs in a series that dates back to 1891. Carolina is 24-9 on the year following a 15-0 drubbing of No. 2 South Carolina Wednesday night in Charlotte. Virginia is 21-14 after a 9-4 win over in-state foe Longwood on Wednesday. At 8-7 in the league, the Tar Heels are one game up on the reigning NCAA champions for second in the ACC Coastal standings behind No. 1 Miami.

NORTH CAROLINA-VIRGINIA SERIES HISTORY• North Carolina is 179-109-4 all-time against Virginia, including a 30-27 record under head coach Mike Fox.
• Carolina and Virginia have met 292 times in baseball, making the Cavaliers the most common opponent all-time for UNC. The Tar Heels have played four schools more than any others - Virginia, North Carolina State (290), Duke (288) and Wake Forest (286). This year marks the first time since 2013 that Carolina will play all four old rivals in the regular season.
• Virginia swept the regular season finale last year, taking all three games in Chapel Hill en route to a national championship. UVA took three of four meetings in 2014, including a 3-2 win in the ACC tournament in Greensboro, and the Cavaliers won two of three in Charlottesville during the regular season that year, with Carolina scoring a 4-2 victory in the series finale.
• UNC’s last series win against UVA came in Charlottesville in 2012. Carolina swept a three-game series that year, snapping a nine-year streak of not being swept at home for the Wahoos. It was the first road sweep by the Tar Heels in the series since 1994.
