That type of thing was really prevented by NCAA previously, was it? His sponsor isn't affiliated with any school, so as long as he stopped taking income upon entering college it would all be legit under the prior rules too, is that true?

No. It would have forfeited his amateur status and he never would’ve been eligible again.
