Louisville, Ky. - North Carolina graduate student defensive back and return specialist Alijah Huzzie has been selected to the 2024 Paul Hornung Award Watch List presented by Texas Roadhouse, the Louisville Sports Commission announced Thursday.

Huzzie, from Lagrange, Georgia, posted 42 tackles, a TFL, three INTs and six PBU in 2023. His three interceptions led the Tar Heels last season. As a punt returner, Huzzie returned seven punts for 112 yards (16 ypr) and a TD. His 16 yards per return would have ranked fourth nationally. Following the 2023 campaign, Huzzie was named Honorable Mention All-ACC in the secondary and as a specialist.

The Paul Hornung Award is given annually by the Louisville Sports Commission (LSC) to the most versatile player in major college football. The Award was created by the LSC in January 2010 with the support of the Golden Boy himself, Paul Hornung, a native and lifelong resident of Louisville and member of the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame.

After the completion of week 11 in the regular season, Louisville Sports Commission staff creates and distributes an informational packet on players who made the Honor Roll to the 17-member Paul Hornung Award Selection Committee. The Selection Committee members vote for their top three choices for PHA Finalists using this list and any other FBS players that meet the PHA criteria. Results are based on a 5-3-1 point system (1st place – 5 points; 2nd place – 3 points; 3rd place – 1 point). A designated number of players with the most points comprises the Finalist List.

In early December following the conference championship weekend, the Selection Committee members choose their top three players from the finalist pool, ranked in order 1st place, 2nd place, 3rd place. The 5-3-1 point system will be used to determine the winner.

Lucas: Summer Pace

Summer practice is intense. It's easy to imagine UNC's eight summer basketball practices as a little more laid-back, especially after you've seen the photos of this weekend's team visit to the Outer Banks. The sun is out, the pace is slower. Except inside the Smith Center, where Hubert Davis never stops espousing his belief in playing fast. (GoHeels.com)
