Numbers say UNC deserved selection

Interesting table comparing UNC to the first 4 out and the last 4 sec teams selected (9, 10, 10, and 11 seed).

Back When Only One Team per Conference Could Go to the NCAA Tournament

Some of us are old enough to remember.

Way back then, some conferences determined who went to the NCAAT by a tournament; for the rest it was the regular season winner. Over time, every conference (?) added a tournament.

Also back in those days, there were a bunch of independent teams - not a member of any conference. Some of those got into the NCAAT, too, but I forget how that worked. It looks like the last independent was NJIT in 2015.

Thinking of that got me wondering how many regular season conference champs would have been displaced this year if the Highlander Rule ("There Can Be Only One") were still in place.

Here are a few examples this time around....

Duke would still be in but Auburn would be out.

Houston would still be in but MSU would be out.

St John's would still be in but New Mexico would be out.

Which is to say that HALF of the regular season winners in the top 6 conferences would miss the NCAAT under the old rules.

[Not trying to make some deep point here; I just thought it was interesting.]

Carolina vs Duke game thread on Friday 14 March 2025

I honestly believe Carolina is already in thanks to many of the other bubble teams especially Xavier losing to Marquette yesterday but a victory over the number one team in America might give them a better seed in the dance.

I am so sick seeing so many articles stating Carolina will be playing a depleted Duke team tonight. Duke had 10 Mickey D all Americans to Carolina’s 4. Duke has every player on the team but one 6’6 or taller so they are still very loaded with tons of talented players and they are very deep.

If Flagg can’t go they showed yesterday against Georgia Tech in the second half that they have plenty of weapons to offset the loss of Flagg’s offense.

Brown to me is just as important not to be playing as everyone witnessed last Saturday he completely shut RJ down with his height and speed last weekend in the second half. Wake tried the same thing last night and it worked for the first 15 minutes of the game as RJ had only been able to get one shot off and it was blocked.

To more keys will be can Powell slow down Kueppel who went off in the second half during Duke’s comeback and Lubin and Washington stop the big center of the Blue Devils Maluach who also had a big second half.

Jackson and Cadeau must contribute offensively and play some defense which is neither one of their strong assets.

Duke is the number one three point shooting team in the league so playing perimeter defense is also a must.

Lastly except for an occasion drive by Cadeau and Trimble hardly anyone for Carolina will drive to the hole to take an easier shot or get fouled. I am especially pointing to Powell and Withers. Both players have hops so instead of living on three point shooting all of the time drive some.

Play like this is a must win game because it might be
