UNC women's basketball team

Congrats to the women on winning their first round game against a very talent St. John's team. The score was tied with 5 seconds to go, and Kelly drove to the basket for a layup and was fouled, creating a 3 point play. Then Keys fouled St. John's shooter outside the 3 point line which was a controversial call, lucky for us the shooter only made one of the three free throws. Next up is number 3 seed Ohio State, that's going to be a tough game for the lady Heels. But will be rooting for them all the way, they may pull the upset.

Will Anyone Leave Duke?

I was just glancing at NBADraft.net - I know, I know, not the best mock draft site, but it's free - and was shocked to see only 1 Duke player listed.

Unsurprisingly, that player was Filipowski.

Even more shocking was that he wasn't even listed in the first round. What?! I'd absolutely spend a first round pick on him, wouldn't you?

I'm assuming Duke players get good NIL. So if Filipowski isn't going to be drafted in the guaranteed money, why would he leave? I mean, sure, he might just want to get to the NBA as quickly as possible. But otherwise...?

So then I checked Duke's 2023 class. Five guys. All ranked in the top 20.

Yikes! Where will Scheyer find enough PT?

It looks like Duke will need to move deep into the NCAAT, just to bump some players into being first round draft picks.

Predicting Next Season Success Is HARD in the Portal Era

I was just glancing at Ga Tech's page to see if any of their transfers were worth thinking about and I noticed that although they had a losing season (15-18) they actually finished fairly strong, winning 7 of their last 10 and going 2 rounds in the ACCT.

Normally, seeing that, I would glance at the roster to see how many seniors they were losing, or look up their incoming class, or both - and if they weren't losing much and had some decent recruits, I'd figure them to be better next year.

Hard to do that with the portal stirring things up.

So you are saying that Joh Scheyer's early career has been better than HDs...you gotta be kidding!

For all the HD haters out there, I have one thing to ask....how does Hubert compare to Duke's glorified coach? HD inherited a UNC team that arguable didn't have a single pure NBA prospect. And, definitely no one on that team was a lottery pick. That team finished second in the ACC regular season. They went 29-10 and were a half game from winning a national championship. Hubert's second team was 20-13 and 11-9 in the ACC. Again with no likely NBA draftees on the roster and, definitely, no lottery picks. Conversely, Scheyer's year one team had a roster full of future NBA players - Filipowski, Lively, Whitehead, Mitchell, Proctor. Yet, Scheyer's talent laden team didnt even make it out of the first weekend of the NCAA tournament. Interesting that Duke's fans seem to be giving Scheyer a pass for a very disappointing first year while UNC fans seem to be giving Hubert little or no credit for a magnificent first year with substantially less talent.

I've criticized some of Coach Davis' decisions, especially how he used his bench this year. But, as this all played out, it appears that raw grown man talent, length and shooting were necessary to be last man standing this year. Duke appears to have had all of that. All said, I do think that we all need to take a breath and give HD credit for his successes over two years. We also need to give him time to get some real high quality recruits in. And, we definitely need to avoid looking across the street at Jon Scheyer like he is the gold standard when he had a team full of NBA prospects but couldn't even make it to the Sweet 16.
