10 Classic U.S. Road Trips

I haven't driven on any of these, but the Key West one scares the living hell out of me. I freak out while driving on the bridges in the Outer Banks; I can only imagine what that would do to me.

I've only been on portions of three of them.

1. Been on Route 66 through Oklahoma, New Mexico and Arizona. (Stopped in Winslow and stood on the corner.)
2. Been on the Pacific Coast Highway from LA to San Fran.
3. Traveled Highway One from NC to Fla.

I used to drive the Pacific Coast Highway 30 minutes to work each day from Lincoln City, OR to Newport. Just gorgeous. I've driven most of the Oregon stretch and all of the Washington section, but over the course of multiple trips.

Drove the Overseas Highway from Miami to Key West when my older brother was in school at UM. coolH20, it can definitely be a harrowing experience. Best thing to do is not think about the fact you're hovering over the ocean and try to enjoy the view.

Last but not least, I've done Highway 50 through Nevada (the Loneliest Road in America). Was taking a circular route from Utah back to Washington after a vacation. It was absolutely horrible. You would crest a hill and see a desolate valley that stretched for miles before...another hill and desolate valley. Over and over. This gave rise to a game called "How Far Away Is That _____." Tree, farmhouse, whatever. I'd guess 2 miles away, and then it would end up being 5 miles away. So boring, but Great Basin National Park has beautiful forests and meadows...in the middle of nowhere.

That highway sounds like the place where Forrest Gump decided to end his over 3 year run back and forth across the US and he stopped and told his disciples that he was tired was gonna go home. Do you know if that is where the scene was shot?

Edit: Never mind I looked it up and that was shot at Monument Valley, Utah.

I do know that part of his run was filmed on the road that climbs Grandfather Mountain.

I would love to try those, but how is the Blue Ridge Parkway / Skyline Drive not on that list? Something missed there...

The Road to Hana. It makes the twistiest road in the NC mountains look like an interstate.

Been on US 29? The Dragon has something like 317 curves over 11 miles. Some of those switchbacks are right on top of each other. It's gotten so congested now with the crotch rockets and car clubs that I don't go any more.
