13 Players Suspended...Thin Squad Against Cal

The response I've gotten from the hardcore SEC crowd around me is that UNC football seems to be stuck in permanent mediocrity that is comically entertaining to SEC types.

If it were an SEC team coming off a 3-win season that has a shoe selling scandal, how much patience would the AD and boosters have with the coach?
You think an SEC AD and booster would care about a secondary infraction?

...They’re not innocent kids. They know right from wrong, they just don’t care about anybody but themselves.

they didn't think they'd get caught. which is stupid considering the microscope we've been under with the ncaa and the grudge the ncaa must have for us after not finding any punishable infractions. they were stupid and impulsive.

Put me down for disgusted with this program. A smear on all Tar Heel fan across the nation. I would rather loose every game and be clean and within all rules.
Sorry. I’m too proud of this University to accept the misdeeds of the program. I’m sorry you can look past the problems this program has. With the past we should have been on high alert for all to behave. Sadly, some of our football players don’t seem to have grasp that concept and our coaches should have run a tight ship with no shortcomings. Again, I could care less about the W-L record at this point. I care much more about our expectations of integrity and honesty. I actually think there quite a few that agree with me.
Put me down as one disgusted with you as a Carolina alumnus and who thinks the two posts I have quoted from you are more of a smear on all Tar Heel fans than anything this football program has done/overcome. You disgust me. 20+ hard-working student-athletes on this football team went through gruesome injuries last season, all in the name of themselves, the program, and the school, trying to bring glory to all. Yet you sit behind your keyboard and thump your chest and stroke your holier-than-thou ego.

Just two examples: Thomas Jackson, walk-on, son of a former Carolina captain, works his tail off and finally, as a junior, starts getting some playing time in 2016. Last season, he was poised for even more playing time, and yet in the second game of the season, he eviscerated his knee against Old Dominion last season. Out for the season. Surgery and 10-month rehab. Just when all his hard work was paying off.

Another example: Allen Artis. He overcomes a straight-up false sexual assault allegation, regains his life back, returns to the team, graduates, and continues to play football all while earning his Masters degree in UNC's Master of Accounting program, one of the Top 25 accounting programs in the nation. Those are just two examples of many.

Yet you sit here on your high horse and are "disgusted" by this program. You disgust me. This whole free board disgusts me which is why I don't post here.

But when you do, you do it well.

After 3 wins, secondary infractions wouldn't top their list of reasons the coach must be fired, but they would be on the list. The logic is this: if you can't win, the very least you should be able to do is keep a lid on the players. Get 9 wins, or beat a ranked rival and go bowling, and you can have all the secondary violations you want.

How do you beat a ranked rival when you have no rivals that are ranked ever...

Also Fed has beaten ranked teams...

How many teams have we beaten with Fedora as HC that were ranked at the time of the game, and how many did we beat that would go on to finish the season ranked?

In other words he is damn if he do and damned if he don’t....

Not if he wins, especially against somebody worth beating.

In the glorious 2015 season, we beat 1 team that was ranked when we played, Pitt, and Pitt was unranked at the close of the season. So whom did we beat that mattered in 2015?

Schedule does matter. Beating 1AAs is a given, and beating the vast majority of non-P5s is not worth much, sometimes worth nothing. Wins over P5 teams that are not good enough to go bowling are worth next to nothing. Losing to P5 teams that finish with losing records (such as SoCar in 2015) is a bad sign.

But Ws over teams that finish ranked are great. Bowl wins over P5 teams are great. Wins over teams that win their bowls are valuable. Wins over any SEC team that makes a bowl are very valuable.

To be somebody, you must beat more than a few somebodies.

2015 was a magical season and would have been in the playoffs with a win over Clemson. Had that onside kick went our way, who knows what would have happened.

Personally, I wish you would STFU for a while.

It was not just a few years back, where UNC was playing in the championship game. Even had a chance to tie that game if not for one of the worst calls ever in that type game. Now, look at UNC. 2 straight mediocre seasons. Last year had a lot to do with injuries, but it would have been a 6-6 season with a crappy bowl if not for the injuries. How did Fedora not take advantage of the momentum ? Now, just down the road, recruits are picking State over UNC about every week for a coach that has an awful record until last year, when it had its best season allmost ever and didn't even make the championship game. Now we have this crap. These suspensions will cost UNC 2 to 3 wins easily. There is no light at the end of the tunnel right now. It is just year's of mediocre seasons.

I would like to see your analytical breakdown of this statement. We only lost 3 starters (2 if you don't count Surratt). Those other two will not miss any of the same games. The two other most impactful players (Shaw and Ross) only miss two games, one of them being ECU. Unless you think Surratt by himself is worth 5-6 wins more than Elliott over the course of the season, there's really no way to square that up.

Some say Carney is our best defensive player. Some say Surratt is the best QB. Some say Jordan Tucker is the best backup tackle. Who knows how good Malik will be relative to the other lbs. Of course Fox is our second best DE.

One OT injury and one DE injury and we could be hurting.

We have so many 50/50 games, and some of those toss-ups are going to come down to turnovers, lucky bounces and injuries (and suspensions are almost like injuries). Like the cal gm is a toss-up, but Id feel much better if you told me they were without their best defender.

All excuses for only 3 Ws last year begin and end with the injuries. These suspensions serve the same purpose as injuries.

One of my big hopes for the D this year was that we would have enough depth of experienced talent at DT to cause big problems in the middle, which would free DEs to create some havoc. But now we know that at a minimum, each of our starting DEs will miss 4 games.

That is not guaranteed to cost us any game, but it could contribute mightily to costing us 1 or 2 or even 3 games, depending on various factors, including injuries.

Well the suspensions are certainly a big deal regarding Cal and Pitt. We're a huge underdog vs UCF and hugely favored vs ECU, so those probably aren't effected.

But Pitt/Cal are 50/50 games.

yeah, Chazz was okay vs Cal last yr. If Elliot does what he did vs Pitt, great, but if he plays like he did vs NCSU (and the others), then you gotta question the impact of the suspension immediately if the O can't overcome poor QB play. D should obviously be fine vs Cal.

Vs Pitt we're Chazz-less AND down Malik Carney. That's a pretty big deal.
