2016 Atlanta Braves thread

@coolwaterunc

I'm no lover of Fredi G but I think you're a bit harsh on him in terms of saying the players aren't inspired by him. The team just isn't any good, regardless of the manager. However, I strongly agree with you about the bullpen thing because that's always been Fredi G's biggest weakness by far.....bullpen management. He's way too trigger happy on pulling the starter to get to the bullpen. And once he's in the bullpen, he's way too trigger happy to use multiple arms, try to play matchups, and just over-manage. That has always annoyed me about him. You nailed it when you said he always seems to push the right buttons. I still maintain Fredi is the company fall guy and will be a good soldier and see this season out and then a new, splash hire manager will take the reigns next year in the new ballpark.

And yeah the Olivera deal still throws me. That dude isn't any good. It was just a weird, weird move because he's not young and he's just not good. Too late to trade Freddie now; they should've done it last year when they dealt everyone else.

Markakis is on fire, so he'll get traded in July.

I'm severely worried about the pitching. Everyone was worried about where we're going to get runs from, but our pitching is killing us. Our bullpen is godawful and our starting rotation is weak. Teheran wouldn't be a #2 pitcher on most teams' staff, much less a #1.

@TarHeelNation11

When I said the players aren't inspired by him, I wasn't just referring to this team, I'm also referring to the days when we still had good teams with Fredi. It just seems to me that, ever since he took over, players have been just going through the motions. Maybe it was just the personality of the teams as a whole, but I don't know. Something just hasn't been right. Do you ever hear players complementing Fredi and saying how much they love playing for him? You'd hear that all the time about Bobby Cox. It just seems like the players play for Fredi because they have to, not because they want to.

We're better without him, and I hope this is serious enough so that we've seen the end of him, in all honesty. Put Smith in LF when Inciarte comes back and put KJ and Frenchy out there until he does.
I hope the woman is okay, first and foremost. But I agree with you, if the new commish wants to make an example out of Olivera and suspends him for a huge number of games, I wouldn't be upset. What's more is I think the team gets to pocket that money.

Do you know if we can void his contract if this has legs?
I don't know what the rule is on that. There's not much regulation on the books for this as it is. Currently, any domestic abuse case is "commissioner's discretion" on how long the punishment should be. Did he ever rule on Reyes...? I don't remember seeing one.

On 680 the Fan here in Atlanta (which is the Braves' flagship station by the way), the chatter about Fredi getting fired is starting to happen. The morning guys on the show I was listening to on my drive in were speculating that if we go 0-fer in Miami, Fredi might get canned on the off day before our next home game.

Why are you reading about Carolina from someone from the AJC anyway? lol
I don't read the AJC ever lol. It's liberal trash. Only reason I know he hates Carolina is because back in the early 2000s when Georgia Tech basketball was competitive in the ACC for a few seasons in a row, Bradley covered Tech / ACC basketball a lot more than usual. He wrote a bunch of salty columns, including one leading up to our championship game against Illinois, stating that we didn't deserve the championship because we didn't play good "team basketball." Whatever the hell that shit means.

As for the article, first of all, he stole the idea from this thread on the Braves board on Scout. Beyond that though, it's a good recap. The problem for Fredi, more than anything, is that he just has zero luck at all. You nailed it earlier when you said he always pushes the wrong buttons. I'd say like 9 out of 10 moves he makes are logical moves and can be defended with numbers and stats, but every. single. time., the move backfires in a huge way. He cannot manage the end of the starting pitcher's night / transitioning into bullpen usage to save his life.

To expound on the bullpen thing, to me the biggest criticism of FG is that he doesn't know how to "feel the game" so to speak. He'll adhere strictly to the numbers, even when the flow and feel of the game suggests you should do something against the grain. That's my main problem with him. He's a slave to the numbers and the matchups, even when it means taking out (or denying the entrance of) the hot hand and going with the guy who's struggling.

Well....

The Braves looked like a completely different team the past three games. Clutch hitting and (mostly) an efficient bullpen -- something we didn't have any of in the first nine games.

Markakis can flat-out hit. I wonder if he finishes the season as a Brave. I have my doubts.

Did y'all stroke out with excitement and die after this weekend?

Don't worry, the Dodgers come to town tomorrow and we can get back to our losing ways!

I'm disappointed Fredi isn't fired.

Fredi pressing the wrong buttons again. Washed up Eric O'Flaherty vs Adrian Gonzalez = automatic home run. Everyone could see that coming a mile away except for Fredi, of course, who really believes he has the Eric O'Flaherty from seven years ago. There's a reason nobody wanted him.

I thought of you coolwater as Fredi was making the change to put EO'F in. Because like you and like basically everyone, I knew he was gonna give up a bomb to AG.

Fredi is shockingly bad at knowing what bullpen buttons to push.

It's ridiculous, really. He always goes strictly by the book and never thinks outside the box...ever. In his mind, it's lefty vs lefty and that's it. Don't take into consideration that your lefty sucks and their lefty is the best overall hitter on the team or anything. Lefty vs lefty always means we're getting an out, no matter what. It's insane. I don't mind taking Julio out in that situation, as it was obvious his illness was running him into a wall. Just not Eric O'Flaherty, and it doesn't have to be a freaking lefty. It just drives me nuts.

Something I will say though, Arodys Vizcaino is a beast.
And I really like Matt Wisler. He went toe to tie with Kershaw today. There's no shame in losing this game today because we faced one of the best pitchers in baseball. The shame is that we blew yesterday's game with a dumb managerial decision. We should've taken 2 of 3 and won the series and instead we start off this brutal stretch by losing 2 of 3.

Yeah, I like Wisler too. He reminds me of Tim Hudson a little bit because of the way he just goes after it and isn't afraid to go toe-to-toe with anyone. One of those workhorse type of guys.

What's going on with the Braves is truly sad. There are 45 MLB players (yes, PLAYERS) that have more homers than the entire team. Their "franchise player" is having the worst year of his life. The shortstop that was supposed to "improve the team" by having better offensive numbers than the greatest defensive shortstop of all time that he replaced is the worst offensive player in the majors and can't field routine grounders. The big Cuban phenom that was supposed to come in and light the world on fire (the Dodgers were willing to part ways with him just after signing him and eating his signing bonus - I guess we didn't see the big red flag) flat out sucks and now he beats women. To top it all off, the Braves even had the gall to ask teams whether or not they want to trade for this man. This once proud franchise was the staple of how a franchise should work. Now, the Braves are the laughingstock of the league. This is just painful...and sad.

The Red Sox start up a home and home series with the Braves tonight. I'm interested to see how that plays out. Porcello can't possibly start the season 4-0, so you guys have that working for you at least.

Getting saved against (if that's how you'd phrase that) by Craig Kimbrel, a born and bred Braves fan from Braves Country feels like a bad dream.

Seriously, screw you Frank Wren. You screwed up this organization so badly.

Will this end up being the worst team in MLB history? Serious question. I think they have a shot. They don't do anything well. In fact, they straight up suck at everything baseball.

One of the Boston sports radio discussions today was whether the Braves were purposefully tanking in order to get high picks in the draft. While not as sure-fire a strategy as in the NBA, the Nationals definitely nailed building through top draft picks.
