Thought some may be interested in seeing a bracket for this year's tournament, one that is chock full of good teams. Here are the teams' current record and national ranking, if ranked.

UNC 4-0 5th
Gonzaga 5-0 8th
Oregon 4-0 11th
S. Hall 3-1 13th
Michigan 3-0
Iowa St. 3-1
Bama 2-2
S. Miss. 1-3

If we're able to beat Bama in our first game, we would face the winner of the Michigan/Iowa State game. This tournament is going to be a huge test for our injury depleted Heels.

and should they win the second game...Gonzaga. Great test for the Heels. If Brob is back I say we play against Gonzaga...If not we lose to Michigan or Iowa St. Could they win against both of those teams without Brob...sure...but the long ball is gonna have to start falling. Either stop shooting them or start making them. 3-19, 6-18, and 8-25 aint gonna get it done for the last 3 games. Pound the ball down low and get some fouls on the opponents bigs.

Work the High/Low, work a curl or two with Leaky & Andrew, let Pierce/Keeling drive and dish...we got the parts, just got to hit a few shots AND FREE THROWS, we'll be okay.

Man reading this thread you'd never know we are 4-0, ranked 5th in the country and beat a veteran ACC opponent picked to finish in the top half of the league by double digits.

Watching us play you’d never suspect we were ranked 5th and 4-0. This team is not playing well. If they contininue to play as they have then brace yourself for some ass kickings in atlantis.

Veteran ACC opponent! Look at who ND has played this year so far. They are not a great team either. They barely beat Toledo in overtime yesterday. Freaking Toledo! Not a doomsayer at all, and I think beating a deadhorse when I say we need to make shots, FT's and stop taking dumb 3ptrs if we cant make them. We arent a great 3 pt shooting team. Yes we will have nights when we make 10-15 of them and we will blow people out of the gym. But they cant rely on that being a steady point stream. Because the next night we will go 3-19 and squeak out a win against teams that should not even be in the game with us. Gardner-Webb hasnt even won a game yet but if I am not mistaken...they were only down 3 at halftime. We were losing at halftime to Elon and ND. Glad we are 4-0, but we have work to do. Alabama aint a horrible team. They beat GT like a drum.

Somebody has to be ranked 5th at this point in the season. Might as well be us. It's not like I've seen any other team look like world beaters.

Yeah I’m pretty sure they returned 10 of 12 players or something crazy like that. Going to overtime against an inferior opener doesn’t mean they’re not going to be a decent team. Teams have bad losses all the time. This is college basketball. And again they were picked top half of the league.

What year do you remember where we dominate every game and play at a high level from the get go? We’re sloppy in November every year, and with all the new faces this year there’s even more of a reason to be optimistic about growth over time.

Always seems like every holiday tournament we play in is loaded with potential ncaa tournament participants as well as being loaded.

What I would like to see...
- Defense continue to grow more consistent. I think we have the pieces for an amazing defense, the question is will it be around for all 40 minutes.
- Second consistent scorer, 13-15ish a night Out of BRob, Pierce, Keeling. I would love to have one of them be in double figures every game in the Bahamas.
- Hit open threes (or even just taking them *cough* Leaky Black*coughcough*). I think we could do well down there, but it will take us hitting open looks (Keeling/Platek especially).

What I am worried about...
- getting hit with a big run and having no answer. Roy allows teams that go on runs to keep rolling early season to test the mettle of his teams. It pays dividends in getting buy in, but man is it painful. I feel like we are headed towards a crushing because we don’t seem to be embracing just how hard for all 40 minutes it takes... yet. Which is why Roy doesn’t bail em out early in the season.

Arch, as you probably know I don't get involved in the madness of game threads, but I'll offer one point here 5 days out. I love Roy but here's where he needs to get past his legendary stubbornness. With back-to-back-to-back games Cole will need breaks --- that, or we'll break HIM.

Leaky is NOT the best answer. Roy, please play KJ. The kid has grown up with the Carolina system and can easily handle 2-3 minutes per half to give Cole blows. Just do it. It wil pay dividends in the long run.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the last time the Heels were in the Battle 4 Atlantis, Marcus Paige was having his coming out party, correct?

Agree with you here Gary, Cole must be managed carefully early season and I too would like to see KJ getting some of those backup minutes.
Hear what you say about Leaky but I reckon Roy wants to use him on the ball at times as a very different look for defenses.

I agree, both about giving Cole rests and about using KJ as his backup, even if he has to use an occasional TO to do it. I think KJ can handle it. This team does need to be handled differently.

As Rabidfrog said, Roy will usually let his team “play through” big runs by opposing teams early in the season. With a scoring challenged team, we’ll get beat by 30 if he does that against a good team. We have to play to keep games close and not afford to fall far behind, at least until we start to score halfway efficiently.

Some good observations guys.

I don't know how we are going to fair in the Bahamas. It could be, we get our weaknesses exposed and lose any or all games, or we get our issues with spacing, shot selections, TO's & FT makes corrected to an acceptable degree and win all of the games we play down there.

I would not advise anyone to try to use transitive thinking when trying to compare one team's performance against another or against our team.
It does not work that way. The variables in how a team performs from one game to the next make's transitive property a very poor predictor.
Just think about it..., our own team doesn't play the same from one game to the next, and most all teams have games that either make them look like world beaters or a Chinese fire drill.

The best predictor's of a game's outcome are: Team health & Talent Level- Shooting % makes & Defensive shooting % allowed- TO & Assists average per game. Even when you take those into consideration, they don't always guarantee a win. It can be a crapshoot.

Indeed. Take each game one opponent at a time and use each as an opportunity to improve. My hopes are we will give more consistently high effort against the tougher competition.

As ajk said above, ISU or Mich aren't going to be puss overs. We have got to show up in the Bahamas with our "A" game.

That Seaton Hall - Oregon game could be really good.

Not only are they closely ranked, but they are nearly identical on offense and defense using Pomeroy's metrics:

Oregon - 109.3 - 89.2
Seton H - 109.2 - 89.5

Each team has plenty of experience and one contender for Pomeroy's POY.

Seton is a bit taller and seems to take better care of the ball. But Oregon plays a slow tempo (#284), and we know how those low-tempo teams can mess up the opposing offense.

The team will have a collective epiphany at some point, all of Roy's teams do! It will start with health; flow from individual breakouts; become solidified with either a close, come from behind win or a devastating, curl up in the corner and call mom loss! BUT....when this wonderfully constructed, deep, versatile, long, skilled, and athletic team clicks, peeps better hide their wives and their kids!

Dadgum, it sure is good to be back on top!

I actually think winning the Bama game is fairly important (as much as a November game can be).

Bama isn't looking so good this year (77th so far in kenpom), so a tourney team should beat them on a neutral floor. More importantly, winning keeps us away from Southern Miss' side of the bracket, as they'll lose to the Zags in all likelihood.

If we did lose to Bama, we'd face the loser of Mich-Iowa St. Both are better than Bama, so we could potentially go 0-2 and be playing So Miss for 7th place. Would be pretty crappy.

So I really hope we can start with a win, and then taking any of the other games would be great.

Caleb Ellis is certainly among the eight best players on the team. Depth will be needed playing three consecutive days. Hopefully Ellis gets his chance

Nate Oats is my boy out here in Buffalo. He really turned UB around..I'm shocked he is struggling at Bama. I'm sure once he gets his recruits, the program will be fine.

bama is my grad school alma mater, so they're my second favorite team. like most people i'm more loyal to my undergrad alma mater (carolina), plus i've been a carolina fan since childhood when we lived in chapel hill. on the rare occasion when the two schools play each other my loyalty is clear: GO HEELS!

This is a huge test for an young unsettled team. Really interested in seeing how Bacot performs against better competition. Gotta believe between the staff and the urging of his buddy, he is stepping forward to be the dominant post player.

More importantly is the question of perimeter shooting. Keeling is not performing at his expected level but its way early. Im more interested in Pierce. He is just a guy that gets numbers. Can he make that work with more playing time? He has the skill to shoot outside but his presence playing a Theo like point forward(around the foul line) may hold some high upside if Bacot is dominant in the post and Robinson can be a perimeter shooter. So many potential lineup combos that time will not allow exploring.

The possibility of playing Michigan and Oregon scare me. I also am not looking past Alabama. I don't believe we can afford to look past anyone. We don't have that luxury.

Michigan or Iowa. If we play Oregon it would be in the title game. I think Oregon is one of the favorites for the national title at this point.

At this point all teams are still in the embryonic stage. Come tourney time they will all be very different, but I think Oregon is better equipped for early readiness then most.
