It just cannot be possible that this kid is so much worst than our other bigs that he can’t get on the court for more than 29 seconds! My goodness, If you can’t get ((((ANY))))burn playing with this group why in the hell did UNC recruit him?

To start with he fouls way too much. His foul rate is significantly higher than Washington, Withers, and Lubin. The only big with a worse foul rate is Claude, and in recent games Brown has played while Claude has not. UNC has been in NINE games decided by one possession. You can't give minutes to guys who are going to give the opposing team free throws when the margin between winning and losing is so close.

Secondly, he has the worst rebounding rate of any big on the roster, including walk-on Holbrook.

Why did UNC recruit him? He was a top 40 big that seemed to be climbing towards 5 star status. After he committed he plummeted down the rankings over the remainder of his high school career. He finished ranked 122 and 3 star on at least one site.

That doesn't mean we should give up on him becoming a good player over time. It just means your initial comment was wrong. He is in fact the worst big on our roster. Had we been able to buy a good portal center, he probably should have redshirted.

The kid needs to develop. He can't develop and get better on the bench.
He develops and gets better in practice. He spends hours and hours working to get better. It's a far better environment than throwing him out on the court on game day to rack up fouls, miss rebounds, and get abused by experienced players... all while hurting UNC's chances of winning.

Why do you think Dean Smith redshirted Serge Zwikker? Do you think Dean and Gut were just wasting a year of his life? They did it because PLAYERS DEVELOP IN PRACTICE.

There is no development without playing in games. Practice isnt good enough. That's not 100% effort mentally or physically.

Those players got better through playing basketball overtime and there was already talent on the rosters unlike now. So they could sit.

He just needs to wait til next year. If he's smart.

It's entirely possible that the other bigs are better than James Brown in practice. I have no intel on whether that's happening or not, just pointing it out there.

Also, Hubert said the following about James Brown when he signed:
"Exactly what we wanted and needed from this class.

“Being from Chicago, he knows how to compete and work hard every day trying to become the best he can be on the court, off the court and in the classroom.

“As a big, he can finish at the basket with either hand, he can shoot the three, he's an elite rebounder and shot blocker, and he's a versatile defender. He is exactly what we wanted and needed from this class. James has an amazing family, and he is so much fun to be around. I'm so glad he's a Tar Heel."

And Hubert has a history of exaggerating how good players are through the media, especially when he's signed him. So if I can use my coach speak translator, it's more something like this.

"As a big, he needs to get better at finishing at the basket. He has limited range right now, but we like his shooting form and hopefully he can develop a perimeter jumper in the future. He's a good rebounder and a decent shot blocker. He's a developing defender who we hope one day will have versatility defensively. He is a work in progress right now, but we're hopeful he has a bright future ahead of him."

I disagree with that, he damn sure better develop in practice and off season to earn time. That is how you improve when you are young and not game time ready. Many have done it.
I pointed that out earlier, and even used Dean Smith and Bill Guthridge's development of Zwikker as an example. His counterargument was "Yawn."

Positive production would have got him more minutes but the truth is he goes in and does nothing
His claim to fame in the last game was backing off of a guard shorting a 7 footer as if he was trying to find a body to box out instead of challenging the shot

Good memory. I forgot how frustrating that play was. Dude was right there in front of him and Brown backed away to give him an easier shot.

Agree… and bugs can take more time than most.
Brown may need another summer or two two build himself up.
Some of the former bigs are a little long in the tooth, but Mando would be a pretty good summer opponent!

I saw him play in Chicago he was long and raw with good footwork, I really liked him. Used both hands well. He went to the national level team his senior year and got depantsed, lost time at that level. He is a project at this level. If we had any semblance of a front line he would be red shirted. He can develop, work young man, but not in ACC games for extended minutes at this point.

Disagree, UNC bigs are not good, Brown is nervous and antsy when he plays because it's not often. At this point he's got the most potential, he should play more.

Yeah I’m for it throw him out there the other guys have reached their ceiling might as well see
Looks like he will get more floor time now, that did not look good for Jalen.

I had to comment. Numerous times I’ve looked at hilights of that team and I think how in the hell did they lose a game…..then I see serge on the court and I remember. The guy worked hard but man he did not belong on the court with those guys. I used to physically cringe when he got the ball.

What Big Men has May produce…
Well dear lord he was was a good big man himself so he should know how to play the position. Not asking him to coach the team just a position player. Under your logic Hansbourgh would suck too but who knows I would tend to say he wouldn’t.
