A future Head Coach you may NOT have thought of..........

Seems to me that the NCAA is somewhat complicit int he AFAM thing. I know SACS was complicit. Seems like they'd have to penalize themselves, too!

It still amazes me how people (any people) can kid themselves that student athletes, especially in the major sports in major conferences, don't get perks and are helped-along throughout their entire scholastic education. They are prized for their athletic abilities, period.

Nothing like "feeding the enemy".

We all need to cool our jets and wait and see what actually happens.

Let's get this back to talking "future coach".

I would really like to see Bob McKillop's name in the mix if Roy retired, but then I realized he's 64 and probably would not a long-term hire and would probably retire around the same time as Roy...

I love the names of Brad Stevens, Shaka Smart and Jay Wright. Neither Brad Stevens or Shaka Smart have ever proven that they can recruit elite athletes. While Stevens made his run to the finals and almost knocked off Duke, Smart became a darling just with an occasional upset. This is the same VCU that took a whipping from Davidson last week. Both of those guys are popular because they took Cinderella to the dance. Carolina isn't Cinderella and just making it to the dance, being in the Top 25 or winning a bunch of games as a coach will never be enough in Chapel Hill. Of the three names, I would think Jay Wright would be the best choice. Wright has recruited elite talent at Villanova, has done well in the Big East prior to it breaking up and done reasonably well in the NCAA tournament. He is a pretty solid tactician on the sidelines. The only problem with Wright is that he runs a small ball offense and UNC fans would have a fit. I do like Wright but I would like a few other options as well.

Jay Wright's most disappointing years came after 09 when he got the 3rd best rated class in the country.

Brad Stevens has competitively recruited the state of Indiana against Big 10 schools. He also got Gordon Hayward into the NBA who is now a max contract player and arguably has a greater NBA name value than any current UNC player in the NBA minus Vince Carter (who has 0 connection to Roy). He also got Shelvin Mack into the NBA.

If Turgeon is the next HC of UNC, I hope it's because Stevens and Hoiberg are in the NBA and coaching then.

In that order
2 out of 3 ain't bad.

I'm sorry, but I'm not all that impressed by Shaka Smart. VCU is a nice little team. But it's almost like their run of dominating their league is over. He'd have to win the A10 every year and make another Final Four run for me to get interested.

I don't know exactly what gtee meant when he said we need a clean break. But if he's saying we need to look outside the family, I'm in complete agreement. The list for me goes like this (not necessarily in this order):

Billy Donovan - probably wouldn't leave Florida
Jay Wright - I think we could get him but he's been an underperformer in NCAA
Brad Stevens - like him a lot but timing could be bad
Bruce Pearl - I think we could get him and I like the guy despite his suspect history - talk about energizing our fanbase...
Hoiberg - never leaving ISU for another college job
Sean Miller - probably wouldn't leave Zona
Turgeon - Not sure he'd do it but I think I could support that
Few - not completely sold here
Gregg Marshall - way ahead of Shaka Smart in my book of up and comers
Krystkowiak - bright young mind but need to see more
VCU is super young and their best player was out for the year about halfway in. Shaka still tickles my intrigue and I would be on board with Brad stevens but I'm not entirely sure that his stay in Boston will be as short as some are predicting.

Will never happen. McKillop has everything that he could want in Davidson. At his age, I am pretty sure that he would not want to deal with having only 3 or so schollarship players on his roster every year (i.e. sanctions).
