There is article on another site about Nickel....not gonna link it...but bottom line he is licking his chops at the thought of playing us... what got me is that he's still at Carolina...working with our s and c coaches getting bigger and stronger....all inpreparation to play against us next season. I guess other transfers from other schools...Ingram, Ryan are doing the same thing at their schools as well. I guess all these kids are still enrolled at their respective schools...and can use those facilities. It just strikes me as weird and more than a little maddening that kids like Nickel can use our weight rooms etc as they prepare to beat us next season. But that is what the portal has created.

I think I read the same article and it lacked clarity as to whether he was getting coached after the season ended. I'm sure he can use the facilities as long as he's enrolled, just like any other student. The access to the S/C coach shouldn't happen, which is where the real value would be for a player.

And of course, we get a lot of transfers into the team, and their old coaching staff did a lot of development that we benefit from. It's the way things will work now. I've not decided what to think of our head coach yet, but I'm sure a lot of people here think we're the net winner because so many people think the current staff hasn't developed anyone.

How is this precisely the portal's fault? A player would be stupid NOT to take advantage of using the services they have until the semester is over.

If anything, It's that One Time Transfer rule that's been compounded. Hard to blame the portal for Hubert overhauling the roster of players he mostly recruited to save his career.

He definitely sounds pissed off at UNC. He said he can score at every level. He is aware we are in the same conference and that you can ask anyone or roll any practice tape to see what the real deal was. And he said he just wants to be somewhere where he is gonna be able to hoop.

I hope he averages 20 a game. IMO, he will make us wish he hadn’t left. How many of our other players could you say this about? Maybe two of the starters?

“He competes,” UNC head coach Hubert Davis said of Nickel. “I never have to tell Tyler, ‘Can you go harder?’ He’s a guy that always competes on both ends of the floor.”

Water under the proverbial bridge I suppose.

He missed nearly all of the wide open shots he took last season, and was consistently lost on defense. Yes he played hard, but he rarely was able to contribute more than he gave up to opposing teams.

I think he'll develop over time, but he got the minutes he deserved as a freshman.

I heard it from an unimpeachable source that:

UNC basketball will be great with you or without you!

This is why peeps leaving or deciding not to come never bother me!

Good luck to all those who left because you are still Family!

Does anyone doubt in any way that when UNC plays VT that Nickel will not do everything he can to for his team to win? Of course he is going to want to show up and show out, why would another program want him if he felt any differently? Yet we read some article that says that and we get upset over what we already knew?

As for his still being at UNC and using our facilities, understand, he is still a UNC student, did you expect him to with draw from school, lose any credits he was currently working on and not finish the semester? The kids that have now announced they are transferring to UNC, they are not here yet either, they are finishing up with their schools as well and I hope the heck they are using that schools facilities to prep for next season. But we are upset now that Nickel is doing the same?

I think most here have expressed how they felt about Nickel transferring, I and I think most wish it did not happen but it did and yes, that water has in deed run under the bridge already. This feels a bit like lets recirculate the negativity toward a kid we have already expressed.

I for one don't understand the negativity at all! We know that the Portal is a thing; we know our team has used it often; we know we have peeps coming in this year so......why the angst??? I understand if you feel Mr. Nickel could have become a real asset here and you wish he hadn't left ( I do too) but being negative against our coaches or the player seems a little petty to me! It seems like both UNC and TNick landed in a good place so I celebrate it as a mutual win!

TP, I think it is a slippery slope fans elect to go down. I believe we can hold what ever opinion we want on his transfer and no I am not in any way glad he elected to leave. But he made his own decision for his own reasons and well, so moat it be. Realize, for similar reasons at programs that players that have announced they are coming to UNC, Nickel has decided to leave us. For the most part, the negative things some say about a kid's decision to leave us can as well be said about the kids coming to us. Example, Nickel quit on his team, yeah and so did Ingram, so did Withers, so did Wojick, so did Ryan. So do we hate on Nickel for doing what those 4 did? Kid's leave programs because they feel another program is in their best interest, it isn't you life it is the kid's and I think a kid making a decision on what is best for him should be respected, even if I may not agree with what all led up to his making that decision.

Bottom line with Nickel is the kid just wants to play and know what, I want kids at UNC that want to play, that have that passion to play, that just have that hunger to drive them. I don't want kids that don't care if they play or not, I don't want kids that are not 100% wiling to earn what they get either. Felt we had some on our team last season that didn't really feel they had to earn their starting roles and minutes, in my view that was a MAJOR issue. How many times did you see in post game PCs players or coaches say, we were not able to match the intensity of the opposing team from the opening tip? You not really ready to play but you start for us and you get MAJOR minutes and we pray that at some point you heat up and get in to a state where you are ready to play only when you get in a nasty hole and have to dig out of it in desperation? LOL

Is this any different than pre portal? I'm not seeing a reason to be outraged at this.

I’m not outraged. But I don’t like it. I especially don’t like a guy taking advantage of our facilities while licking his chops and talking like he wants to wreck us.

I never really warmed to Nickel anyway. I didn’t care for his personality and over confident nature. And I almost never root for VT. So I hope he fails miserably.

There appears to be people pretty upset about this, even if you aren't. I would assume that Hubert could have him locked out of the facilities if he wanted, but he appears to be ok with it. I would imagine Roy and Dean would also be ok with it. As far as him talking shit, I'd need to see the quote and context before I have an opinion on that.

He, like the rest of our bench, was generally yanked if he made a mistake or missed a couple of shots. Meanwhile the rest of our starters had full impunity regardless of how many bad shots/unforced turnovers/defensive lapses they had. I know our starters rarely gave Hubert a big lead to work with but the bench had a very short leash. It’s hard for them to develop confidence that way. I know this is a moot point so it’s the last I’m going to say.

Right on Arch’. Simply put, that is the mess that was 22-23. People left, some are coming in. Hubert made a mess, has worked hard to clean it up and hopefully it’ll work with the new blood.
