Big risk for Rat Face to do this now. If dook loses a couple games this year, he won't be able to use "my knees hurt" as an excuse to sit out.

Gotta love the way he's acting like he's dook's starting PG. Ego Maniac of Historical proportions.

Wait now, so he discovers, only after working with his team for 3 days that he has to have a knee replacement? Like he didn't know that prior to practicing his team for that Dominican trip? It brings 2 big time questions to me.

1) As I understand it coaches are able to practice their teams early if they have a exhibition trip like this set up but if you don't then practices now are not allowed. Setting up such trips is limited, you can only do it once every so many years. Now I know some recent changes do allow for a off season day or so for teams but not totally sure how that plays in. But if these practices were held and K knew he was not going to actually do the exhibition trip did he not sneak in some extra practice time for his team outside of what should be allowed? Is that a violation?

2) K may not have been able to go on the trip, will all his assistant coaches also have knee replacements at the same time? He had coaches take over while he was out last season, can they not handle this team for a handful of exhibition games? Is there so little trust in that coaching staff that K can not trust them to be able to do even this? And are not games like this supposed to be rewards for the players, things you talk about in recruiting, things the kids look forward to? But because K can't go no one goes?

I wonder why Roy didn't do an interview solely focused on his own physical problems and even his bouts with vertigo. It's almost as if Roy wants the focus to be on the players rather than himself. What a novel idea.

K is such a self-centered prick it's nauseating.

This is so true.

K really has made the program about himself instead of the players. That's even looking through a rational eye. It's disgusting.

Which is why I have said for years that once he leaves (on his own or dies), the program will sink like a rock. He won't have anyone come in who will come close to his success there, so I seriously doubt anyone, especially from his coaching "tree", will be able to make dook relevant after he leaves. I think they will have a couple of years of marginal success, but within 5 years they will be in bad shape.

Just MHO.

As someone who's had 3 major knee surgeries and two back surgeries, I can empathize and I hope he recovers fully soon. I feel for the man, it's hell getting old.

It is a little strange that he didn't insist that the rest of the staff take the team. I wonder how much confidence he really has in Capel, who didn't fare well when he filled in last year. I think he's a much better recruiter than coach and I think the LOM realizes that as well. This is an absolutely loaded d00k team but they have a freshman PG, and if they were to go down and not do well, it could hurt their confidence. The LOM is sly as a fox.

ah, the underlings, the coaches..wonder are they whispering to the wives...no confidence in me!..in us!!!....if dookies have rocky start or any shaky streak( I can see long faces n that bench)..Oh wait!!..someone was bound to "trip" another player..so nip this thing in the bud, right?

I think you're giving the old stinky rat way too much sympathy and credit. I think his thought process is much more "if i don't get to go on this fun trip, nobody gets to go!" than it is some sly foxlike maneuver. The guy is a wiener. Simple as that.

I think you nailed it on Capel. University of Durham will have 2-3 strong years after K retires if Capel takes over. But by years 5-6 he will have turned the program into Oklahoma basketball. His saving grace for lasting that long will be his recruiting. Capel is too much of a players coach and I don't think folks that pull for them realize yet how K stamped that program on the map and is as big if not bigger than the program. They won't fall off the map but I see them dropping back to a top 20-25 program under Capel rather than a top 3 program long term(say if Capel lasts 10-12 years). It won't be Dough bad for them because Capel isn't the "red ass" that Dough was for UNC. The UNC program dealt with this when Dean retired and it took literally the best candidate possible in Roy to right the ship for UNC. No other coach in the profession would of been able to handle the job at UNC like Roy has , does , and will continue until he retires.

There is a reason the Devil is called the prince of lies!

With ratty, even the truth is just a cover for even deeper lies. He knew some time ago that he needed knee replacement and D hit it on the head. He just wanted the extra practice time! While nothing about this is a real violation, it certainly does strain the concept of professional or personal ethics! D also nailed the second point, because Capel, in addition to being a piss poor bench coach, needs constant monitoring so his habit of amateurish cheating doesn't stain the program!

I would be that these are the reasons for his "surprise" major surgery; but he is so devoid of personal morality and self-centered that I could also believe it is the "if I can't play, I'm taking my ball and going home" syndrome too!

Capel isn't getting that job. He had his audition at Oklahoma and failed miserably. And his limited audition when K was out with medical issues once again proved that he doesn't have the skills to run that program. Hard to figure who they would get if they decide to pick off the K coaching tree. Brey is probably in too sweet of a position at ND, and getting too old, to take that impossible job on. Amaker ruined his chances at Michigan. Ditto Dawkins at Stanford. Snyder would be in the discussion, but his problems with the NCAA at Mizzou probably has him on the blacklist. Wojo is having marginal success at Marquette, but not the kind that makes him a shoe in. Will be a hard job to fill as it is almost impossible to follow someone with K's success. Often taking a job like that is almost a career killer. With a long time power, you want to be the guy that follows the guy who succeeds the legend.

Another year of success at Northwestern and Collins will be a lock for the job (if he wants it). He might recognize the difficulty in following a legend and choose to chart his own course (one with far less pressure and expectations) at NU. But I'm almost certain he'll get the first call. He's a perfect little K replica. K will like that.

Actually, my bet is the gig would go to Capel, maybe not for the reason most think. Not saying that Capel is the best candidate that duke could find but one thing pretty much all strong coaches know, you do not try to step right in to the shoes of a legendary coach. That is why Dean wanted Gut to step in for a temp time and not go to Roy right away. When K steps down the fans expectations will still be demanded by the fill in tat only the legendary coach could fulfill, the first coach after K steps down will not last long because he will suffer from "well K would have done this or K would have done that". Coaches on the rise would not want any part of that for a couple or three years.

K has framed that program so much around himself that if anything it will be harder for a new coach to make it than it was when Dean stepped down, oh the new coach will get the K left over players but most of them will be gone to the NBA after their single NCAA season. The new coach will want to try to make his own mark and step out of Ks shadow, recall how well that worked when Doherty tried to do that with us? And don't look to the refs for those extra points per game and don't look for the NCAA to give you cover for Lance Thomas like infractions, K got/gets those things, the new coach will not.

You may be right. Collins totally slipped my mind for some reason. Still if he is smart he will let someone else come in and be the first guy in K's shadow. Then come in and be the savior, much in the way Roy did after MD didn't work out.

Actually, and I don't think he would do it because he has the most perfect gig in basketball, but if I were Duke I would try to get Bilas to take over. Because of ESPN and his twitter he has enormous credibility with recruits that would keep that talent pipeline going. But the man is hardly scrambling for money, or fame. So I don't see him wanting that type of pressure. But you never know

Over at DI they are saying we "used to have basketball superiority" and that we're the "2nd or 3rd best program in the state" these days. "Success breeds jealousy" was also one comment.

They must have been sleeping the last two March/Aprils. Literally no team in the country has had more success than us recently.

Aren't they supposed to be smart over there?

Capel stayed at dook because he's next in line, or at least was given that hope. Anything else would cause a mutiny behind the scenes, and probably include racial undertones.

But I actually want this greasy dirt bag to get the job.

Maybe so, but I just don't see them risking their cash cow with someone who has proven he wouldn't keep them at an elite level just to make a racial point. But in today's politically correct foolishness, especially promoted on college campuses, it wouldn't come as a surprise.

I hope Capel gets the job so badly!

A. He sucks!
B. He is dirty!
C. He sucks at being dirty!

Hey, maybe Kelvin Sampson could take over for Cal while we are at it, lol!

He's not next in line because he's black.

He's next in line because guys like Jones, Okafor, Tatum, Giles, Bolden are going to dook.
No one else with dook pedigree is getting those guys.

Capel recruits like a mofo. He just can't coach. Recruiting is why he's on the staff. If the LOM had an ounce of faith in Capel's coaching ability, the team would still be going on the scheduled trip. He doesn't and so they aren't.

If Roy were having the surgery, you can bet Steve would be down there with the team.

Heard the Sportshop guys speculating that Bagley reclassified because ratty couldn't guarantee he would be coaching next year!

From their lips to God's ears, as my sainted Grandmother used to say!

It worked

Yep, I nailed it.

K didn't want Bolden to be in the starting line-up on the trip and then place him on the bench when the season started. K used his knee surgery as an excuse. Capel could have coached the team. As Allen Iverson said.."Practice, ya talkin bout practice". K is self centered rat. Regardless, Bolden is pissed. No way Bolden would be on the team if he would have known Bagley would be on the team. He would have transferred out. Now, the kid is trapped. Bagley and Duval are good, but Kennard and Tatum are better. I'll take that trade everyday. With Kennard and Tatum, Duke would go 42-0 this season.:)

Bagley is scary good, but I have seen the second half of Tatum's year and he was almost unguardable! If not for his awful D, he would have been a real problem. If Bagley is better than Tatum, I hope he goes the Euro route, lol!

And look K-Rat's latest pitch to Zion that he will use him like Labron. He will probably get away with it. Looks like Duke is the favorite for Zion.

What the....? How does this even make sense? Has a team ever cancelled games before because their coach is not healthy enough to participate?

Imagining K running liners with the team, and he quits after the first free-throw line one. "Sorry guys, trip's cancelled!!" Michael Scott couldn't have done it better in The Office!
