...for my light blue brethren.
As I told y'all before, this was a summer of truth for this team, and I just picked up some more info this weekend from a source who is very close to some of the players.
Now some of this will sound random, but I'll share as much as I can of what I heard (at least the part that's fit to print ):
BTW: I'm gonna post a link at the bottom to an article I saw yesterday that talks about some things I had heard about that went on in Chapel Hill (very cool!)... well, there was a lot that went on outside of Chapel Hill as well.
Stuff:
- Most of the guys understood how close they came last season... as well as their (and the team's) short-comings... and worked their a$$es off to get better. On-campus pick-up games returned to their legendary status --- an intensity not seen since Psycho stepped on campus in the Summer of 2005. Some particular players who have NBA aspirations started to "get" the fact they needed to step up their games --- and the pros let 'em know it.
- Some of the best pick-up action was off-campus, especially in Charlotte with PJ Hairston and friends, involving current, former and future UNC players, and players from other schools.
As I posted in another thread, Hicks worked hard with NBA guys and improved his offensive game and impressed with his new aggression, and Brice got a new sense of urgency and earned a lot of respect. Meeks worked hard at rehabbing his tweaked knee and getting more stamina, as we know.
- Some random quotes (I can't reveal the individual sources)
"PJ's got his head right." (translation: Hairston has pretty much cut off the hangers-on, and finally sees what he has going for him if he gets dedicated)
"Little Felton can ***-ing play" (referring to Jalek)
"Berry's a man. Any recruiting guys that ranked any guard ahead of him don't know what the f*** they're talking about. I played against all those guys in AAU." (from a player from another non-ACC school)
Anyway, here's the aforementioned link from the Fayetteville paper. The intensity and competitiveness they describe under Hubert's direction was probably even more so in the games I mentioned. Enjoy!
