A southern accent doesn't mean you're slow, ignorant, or stupid:

I always thought "bureau" was a New England term. But ya - I'm guessing I would completely miss things in that movie if I ever tried to watch it.
................................................what did you do the entire time you were at Carolina? I realize it's probably the least Southern of all large public Southern universities, but still. Did you just like drink warm tea and eat lobster the whole time?

Be honest, how many counties in North Carolina have you been to (driving through doesn't count) besides Orange, Wake, Durham, and Mecklenburg? I'll put the O/U at 1.

Haha, just messing with you. This seriously was my biggest complaint with UNC's curriculum though (and any state's flagship university that takes in out-of-state residents) with respect to learning about the entire state of North Carolina. I'm sure there are PLENTY of people who graduate from Carolina from NJ or NY or PA or wherever, who have never, ever stepped foot outside of Orange/Wake/Durham County, and as such, have no clue what the state of North Carolina is really like. Just seems to me that if you're going to go to a university that is named the same name as the state, said university would at least try to put in to place a freshman course where you take a field trip to various parts of the state or something.

Under

ETA- Scratch that. He's been to New Hanover County or Dare County or maybe both. Move the O/U to 1.5 counties. That would be a tough one.

Shit, I meant to make a disclaimer that the "1" was going to be a beach county. Left that out of my post. You're right, new O/U is 1.5. Hell, I know he ain't been to Richmond County..........which he's better off for.

That's another thing that's much different in the South than the North. The importance of counties. Chapel Hill is in Orange County, right? I only know that because when I got my underage drinking ticket down there I noticed it was the Orange County ALE that f*cked me. And yes, I've been to the beach there a few times (not sure which counties those are... and if the different places I stayed were in the same county or different). I've also been to the mountains a few times - again, not sure if each trip was to the same county or not, even when they were different towns.

I'd be willing to bet half my friends up here couldn't even tell you what county they live in. Same with my high school graduating class... half probably couldn't tell you what county the high school was in. Everything is just listed by town/city up here. Even if you're trying to describe a region of the state, you don't refer to the county. It's "North Shore" "South Shore" "Metro North" "Metro West" "Central MA" "Cape Cod" etc...

Damn THN, we forgot Buncombe/Watauga.

Hark- one reason we know counties down here, well at least Wake, Orange and Mecklenburg is because those 4, plus Buncombe (Asheville) and New Hanover/Brunswick (Wilimington) are the only reason that NC is a purple state. They are also the counties most full of transients. There are 100 counties in NC and those 8 are all blue and full of yankees and Ohioeans (a close relative of the yankee).

Also, a lot of things down here were (and many still are) named after the county- hospitals and schools in particular.

And finally, NC is much more geographically diverse than is Mass, so counties come up that way as well. Mass has 3 distinct regions, whereas NC has at least 10, if not more.

I guess cause it's just never referred to. Off the top of my head I can name 5 counties in Massachusetts, and other than my time at UNC - I've lived in MA my whole life . And again, I'd wager my off the top of the head count of 5 would be more than the majority of my peers could name.

* After looking it up, I see there are 14 counties in MA. So I got a little over a third of them.

Exactly, especially your first paragraph which I'll post again for emphais:

Additionally, more or less, all Southern states are created the same way in today's era of the Yankee transplant: the biggest city(ies) have a sizable chunk of northern transplants who don't know dick about the rest of the state. Additionally, as soon as you get outside of said city's city limits, you experience what the state is truly like. I will illustrate with an example. People always say this phrase when talking about Atlanta and Georgia:

"Once you get outside of Atlanta, you're in Georgia."

Plus, Hark, keep in mind, Southern states are massive. Look at Georgia on Google Maps, especially the Southern part. It goes on forever and ever and ever, amen. So Southern states have way more counties just because they're much bigger in land mass.

Also, keep in mind that Southern states like the smallest level of government possible when applicable (so, county). Northern states seem to be way more "unified" in their laws from county to county. In the South, you can be in one county that sells beer (even on Sundays!) and then you can drive three counties over and be in a county that doesn't sell liquor EVER.

Ya, county names never find their way into hospitals or schools up here. Hospitals are named for towns/cities or after people or something. And high schools are either named for the town/city their in, after people, or if their a regionalized combination high school a combo of the towns names, or even just given some weird Native American name or something. Masconomet High School, Pentucket High School, and Mohawk High School (three Native American tribes, or chiefs, or something) are some regional schools that we played occasionally in sports.

One last thing on "Teach Hark About The South" and then I'm done haha.

The South is kinda cool because you can immediately, within a 95% confidence interval, tell if someone is a Yankee or not, simply by their name. If you meet someone in the South and their last name sounds like it's stereotypical WASP, A.K.A. sounds like it's from England, Scotland, or Ireland, odds are not only they're from the South, but also their family has been in the South (often in the same state or even same town) for generations. A real world example would be Roy Williams. Additionally, I'm not going to give away people's names who post on here, but my name, UNC71's name, Raising Heel's name, one glance at our names and it's pretty obvious we are Southern WASP (White, Anglo-Saxon Protestants). If you run across someone in the South named Gino Cellini, then you need to start being suspicious.

You can't do that in the North though because all of y'all are named like you're from Italy, Judea, or Poland/Germany. The one exception is Irish names up in New England, of course.

Another trick you can use, though this one isn't as reliable as the last name trick, is sect of Christianity. Odds are if someone is Catholic, their family hasn't been in the South for more than one generation. This method has more outliers though because there is a small contingent of multi-generation Southerners who are somehow Catholic.

That shit pisses me off when it happens too.
As the Turnpike Troubadours song goes....

"Well, De Queen's dry, so I bought us both a bottle in downtown Broken Bow."

It's a real life concern down here. The problem gets even more magnified when you throw in North Carolina's stupid ass ABC stores. Who wants to make two separate stops to get your beer and your liquor?

I keep meaning to ask if you watch Squidbillies on Adult Swim? It's set in Georgia. It's been on about 10 years now. Unknown Hinson does the voice of Early Cuyler. I did a small guitar piece on one episode years ago where Stan teaches Rusty to play guitar. Those guys are nucking futs.

Oh cool! I forgot about this show! Does this still come on? I had drinks with him one time after one of his shows. He's one crazy dude! ;)

Probably. I haven't watched AS in probably 5 years. When I lived in Charlotte in the mid-90's, he and another guy Don Swan (who died of a heart attack in Lupie's Diner on Monroe Rd.) had a sick cable-access show called the Wild, Wild South. Unknown Hinson and Rebel Helms. I saw him a few times at the Double Door. His name is Danny Baker. He was in a band with Billy Bob Thornton a few years ago, not as Unknown, but as himself.

No I don't watch Adult Swim and haven't heard of the show. I don't know who Unknown Hinson is either. That's cool you did some guitar work for them though!

Bump. Just because I like this thread. Another amusing Southern dialect idiosyncrasy you'll hear from certain dialects is "lie-kiss" instead of "like this." And it's always when ending a sentence. For instance, if someone is demonstrating something to his buddy he'll say "come on man, do it like this!" But it'll come out as "cuh-moan man, do it lie-kiss."
