ACC Games This Weekend

Fifteen ACC football teams are in action this weekend, with five of the contests against teams from other power conferences. In addition, two matchups are conference tilts.

Here are some thoughts about this weekend’s games. And please share yours as well:

Friday

BYU @ SMU, 7:00 (ESPN2)

The Cougars are in the Big XII so an SMU win would carry some weight. BYU is supposed to be a bit down this season, so at home, SMU will win and might pull away.

Duke @ Northwestern, 9:00 (FS1)

If you have not seen where Northwestern is playing its home games this season, you must tune into this for a while. The Wildcats are playing in a makeshift stadium on what was once a practice field because they are building a new stadium in the old one’s place. Oh, Duke will win a close, low-scoring affair.

Saturday

Pitt @ Cincinnati, Noon (ESPN2)

The Bearcats are a Big XII member, so this would be a really nice win for the league and the Panthers. Scott Satterfield is already on a warm seat there, but Cincy at home is hard to pass on. Bearcats in a close one.

Georgia Tech @ Syracuse, Noon (ACCN)

A second conference game for the Yellow Jackets who have run the ball well so far and shown they are quite physical. Game two of the Fran Brown era but we don’t know what the Orange has yet. Kyle McCord might be a difference maker here. Cuse in a very close one.

Cal @ Auburn, 3:30 (ESPN2)

Nobody travels more miles this season than Cal, and this could make for an unpleasant long trip home. Auburn is okay, but the heat, crowd, and athletes will be too much for the Bears. Auburn by 10.

Duquesne @ Boston College, 3:30 (ACCNX)

Games like this should never be played. BC may have a letdown after winning at FSU, but it will pull away.

Jacksonville State @ Louisville, 3:30 (ACCNX)

Not exactly a tough start for the Cardinals, who beat Austin Peay, 62-0, last weekend. J State may hang around for a while, but Louisville will be way too explosive and cruise to a win.

Marshall @ Virginia Tech, 4:30 (The CW)

This isn’t a gimmie, not considering the Hokies lost to Vanderbilt last weekend. Tech will prevail, but it might not be the most entertaining game of the day.

Virginia @ Wake Forest, 7:00 (ESPN2)

The second ACC matchup of the day, the Wahoos looked pretty good in their opening win over Richmond. Wake pulled away from NC A&T. Close game between two teams that will struggle finished in the upper half of the conference. At home, however, Wake pulled it out.

Cal Poly @ Stanford, 7:00 (ACCNX)

Cal Poly lost to San Diego, while the Cardinal was competitive in a loss to TCU. Edge goes to Stanford.

NC State vs. Tennessee (in Charlotte), 7:30 (ABC)

Enormous opportunity for the Wolfpack, and the ACC. I know most UNC fans won’t root for State under any circumstance, but this game is really big for the league, and that affects Carolina.

Now, Tennessee is supposed to be really good with an outstanding QB, but Tennessee is also a program that stumbles every so often, and if State takes care of the ball, I give it a great chance at pulling out a victory. The Pack will be physical enough, athletic enough, and will have a good plan. I think State pulls this one out in a close game.

App State @ Clemson, 8:00 (ACCN)

Everyone knows App State can cause all kinds of problems, and if the Mountaineers get off to a quick start against a Clemson team that was routed last week on national television, I can see this game getting real tricky for the Tigers. But too many dudes will be enough as Clemson wins by two TDs.
