This roster is coming together - lots of talent already and if Cadeau reclasses most of us will be really excited. That said, I think we're still one SF away from being really fricken good.

There is some noise that we'll try to add this player. I think it makes sense as the staff is trying to win big this year, not do a slow rebuild. We may have to wait until NBA draft withdrawals (or more portal additions) as there isn't really a player that can be a big value add at SF currently in the portal -- maybe Jaylon Tyson excepted.

Anyone have thoughts on who we'll target?

OK so my view is those folks that feel we need another small forward are the same folks that do not look at Ingram as a small forward, a thinking I am NOT a part of. Even to the extent that if Mgbako wanted to commit to us now I don't think I would take his commit (BTW, yes I do see Mgbako as a 3 rather than a 4). I am just fine with Ingram starting at the 3, FYI, he was considered a point forward out of high school and has done little to change that. Here is some red meat for those that love to pounce negative on my views, well yes I would now take The Dunlap kid and pass on Mgbako (no, I do not want Jack to reclass either), yeah, I did just say that, can you imagine why, no I am not drunk or high, it is to early in the day for that but thank you for wanting to ask! LOL I say that because Dunlap does not effect our roster rotation next season, he either red shirts, which I would want him to do or he is the very last scholly guy on the bench and plays with blue steel. There is no down side to bring Dunlap in, Mgbake in would give us a very problematic playing time issue that could well kill any chemistry we may have, could destroy the locker room. I think it is already going to be hard enough to balance PT so that the guys we now have that are very talented play (I am good wth Ryan and Wojik backing up Ingram at the 3), we do not need to make that even harder, especially knowing Hubert has yet to show he is willing to consistently go deep in to his bench. SO I am a NO on another small forward. I am even more happy with our power forward spot depth with starting Withers, backed up by Jalen and High. The who earns the starting spot battle between Jalen and Withers should be fun to watch, really want to see how far Jalen develops, he could well be our starter if he gets back to game shape, he wasn't nearly that this past season.

Assuming Cadeau is coming via reclass, the only spot I see even worth consideration of adding is maybe a back up for Bacot but have to ask, how good a Bacot back up can we get, a center like we would want isn't going to be willing to come and play 5mins a game if that. I feel good that we can cover, between Jalen and High, the back up Bacot minutes. I actually want Bacot playing less than 30mins a game, 2 seasons in a row of watching Bacot hurt in the last game we play is not something I want to see repeated for the coming season, got to rest that kid and not grind him down so much. Injury comes at any time for sure but a tired players does tend to get hurt more often and a grinding season has a cumulative effect on the players, you have to find them rests to allow those legs to be fresher for the whole season.

I'm usually a worrier, but I think we're good. We have 11 guys, 9 of whom are proven players.

Sure, it's unclear how much we can expect from Washington and High. So It might be nice to find a Justin Knox kind of player who is good enough yet willing to take a back seat role. But I'm not sure how you attract someone good enough who would accept what are probably going to be slim minutes. I mean if Washington continues to improve, he'll eat all those minutes.

Maybe a guy with a couple of years left who's willing to play light PT this year for a more robust role a year later? Would Brown consider reclassifying so he can learn for a year behind Armando? I assume we would have heard already if that was a possibility, but who knows?

Similarly, at a glance we might seem shy at SF, but we actually have lots of guys who can slide into that role, including one that doesn't make us smaller.

As it stands, we're 3 deep or more pretty much everywhere. Here's how it looks to me, but I'm sure some will disagree.

RJ - Seth, Wilcher, Dunn
Ryan - Wilcher, Wojcik, Dunn
Ingram - Ryan, Wojcik, Withers, Dunn
Withers - Washington, Ingram, High
Armando - Washington, High, Withers

If I had refreshed the page before starting my response, I could have cut my answer in half.

The idea is not just to have guys who "can slide into the role" though, but to have an actual high-end player. You're really bullish on Withers, but I don't think he's a guy you want to start and I don't think Hubert does either. He's a spot up shooter and rebounder, but is a pretty limited player overall.

When we won the national title our 4th and 5th starters were Hicks and Pinson, two former five star recruits, future NBA players, and super high end athletes. It wasn't just some average ACC player out there. We also had another NBA player in Tony Bradley and Luke / Kenny coming off the bench. The team was stacked.

I feel like the recent down years have lowered fan expectations too much. UConn didn't start any players as limited as Withers. If we want to go back to top-5 type teams the expectations have to be higher. Withers is a good bench piece, but the idea we should turn down a high end player if we can find one because we need to protect minutes for someone else doesn't make much sense to me. The point is to try to compete for titles; take the best players you can find and let guys earn minutes.

That is the rotation I would expect the see if Cadeau does not reclass, it is NOT the rotation I would want to see if Cadeau does not reclass, just not a buyer on RJ as a PG, tried hard to be but I can't sell myself on it. Without Cadeau, I would start Wilcher at the point and move RJ to the 2 and I am not totally sold that I would start RJ because I am sold Ryan is a serious player but my gut says start RJ at the 2. I would not expect many, if any will agree with me on that, any of that.

Where this gets really interesting is when we bring Cadeau in to the mix because Cadeau is a day 1 starter and I think that would be true for any team in the country, that kid is day 1 starter for UNC when ever he gets here and I fully expect that to be next season. That is when I shuffle things a bit more, rather than start Wilcher I move him to the 2 to either start or back up RJ, I have Seth primary backing up Cadeau at the point (RJ for me would be 3rd on the PG depth chart). I have a really serious battle for PT at the 2 between RJ, Wilcher, and Ryan. The other interesting battle is between Jalen and Withers for the 4 spot starting as well as what could be interesting between Jalen and High for Bacot's back up minutes, don't be shocked if High grabs those, kid is more than just a warm body, he is a strong upgrade to Shaver or McKoy as the back up 5 and could be closer to the level of Nance as Bacot's back up, in some respects could be an upgrade to Nance, kid is really fluid, moves well for his size where Nance did not. I don't think Jalen will be able in just this off season to add the weight and strength I think he needs to play the 5, but I do think he can stretch 4 the heck out of the ball.

All that said, if Puff wanted to come back - and was willing to be 3rd (at best) in the SF rotation, unless he could earn a better spot - I'd be happy to welcome him back.

I think we need another big man, not a wing. We only have Washington and Bacot as the only players 6'10 or bigger. Withers is a thinner 6'9 guy who is more of SF, and Ingram is only 6'7. Both of those guys can play the SF spot. We need a guy who can back up the 4/5 other than Washington and High. High is a freshman and I dont think he will be that ready to give us good production at the 4/5 spot and Washington is still unproven, as we dont know how healthy he will be over a full season.

We definitely need Cadeau and ideally we could use a reclass and committ from Jarin Stevenson. He would fit the PF spot perfectly. Or I would love to have Mgbako

I wouldn't mind seeing Wilcher get some PT at point. And I really like Ryan at SG. But if RJ doesn't get starter minutes, we're hurting ourselves.

It remains to be seen whether RJ gets better at point with more targets who can move without the ball and can shoot when they get the ball. I feel strongly that he will.

It also remains to be seen if RJ's own numbers improve or decline when surrounded by more reliable and cooperative scorers. I expect he may end up shooting less, but without any reduction in points scored.

I'm less optimistic about RJ's contribution if Cadeau takes over. But that would be an interesting experiment, too.

There are 2 things I don't think you can ever have enough of.
1. Talented/skilled wings
2. Great 3-point shooters

I'll take either one of those if we can get them. But a true backup 5 is probably more needed. A lot of games come down to if you can get defensive rebounds in the last 3 minutes.

We going to respectfully bump heads on this one simply because I see Withers much differently, I can fully understand why you see him as you do and my considering him a much more important addition does not make me right and you wrong or visa versa. You look at Withers based on what he has done in ACC play for a bad Louisville team, I look at him for what I see him becoming for this assemblage of UNC talent, I am looking at both the fit and the talent.

I am betting on a 6'8" 235lbs guy is going to be able to use that size and strength effectively, in doing so I am going to agree with some folks that have watched a heck of a lot more of that Louisville team play than I did, than I think most UNC fans did. As I have shared, I see Withers like Hicks with a jump shot, that on it's own is a player I am gonna love! No matter who is at the point or who is at the 5, Withers now gets to play with huge upgrades at positions critical for his game to flourish, will he, I don't know any more than anyone else but I do want to see it! I just love the book ends of Ingram at the 3 and Withers at the 4, just in my opinion great compliments to each others game.

As with goucho on the Withers question, I have to bump heads with you on RJ. In 3yrs of watching RJ play of all the positives I can associate with him his decision making at the point is not good in my view. I love the kid as a spot up shooter, love the kid to create himself a shot when he needs to, love him getting the mismatch switch and gets a big man trying to guard him out in space, he toys with him like a cat does a mouse until he decides to end it and score. RJ is great at creating his own ops, I just don't see him solid creating for others. I love the guts that kid plays with, I don't question his heart, I question his ability specifically as a PG.

My hesitation of even starting RJ is more about the fact that RJ is small for a 2, he is small for a PG, I do think he tends to play bigger than his actual size however. It is more the respect I have for Ryan and the excitement I have for Wilcher, those are major talents to battle for a position you have not played at UNC under Hubert.

First off, I don't think we're national title contenders. Our 2 best players have been part of 10+ losing seasons that were a flukish March run away from have accomplished basically nothing in 3+ seasons. I think we'll be better next year and might be a second weekend team but certainly a step or two below. You're right, we don't have enough pros on this team.

The UConn comparisons are dumb. Their 7'3" freshman is an NBA player whenever he wants to be. Hawkins is an NBA level 2-guard. Their point-forward (Jackson?) is like Theo Pinson and will have a shot to stick around. That UConn team had dudes and dudes that will have large tax bills playing in the NBA. Also, IMO Sanogo is a more offensively talented player than Bacot is. So we're not that and anyone who thinks we are is overestimating us (even if Cadeau is here next year).

Specifically on Withers. I think he's skilled enough to help this team more than Nance did last year. My theory is that skill figures it out eventually. Experienced skill figures it out pretty quick. I like that Withers can shoot it a bit. I think he knows how to pick-and-pop. I think he knows how to replace. I think he can dribble it a bit too. And I love how he can finish with his off hand.

I suppose we just disagree then. Saying a core of players who've already been to a title game can't be title contenders seems wrong to me. I agree if Withers is our planned starter we probably won't be top 10, which is why I expect us to upgrade.

According to TOS we are looking at other wings. If Julian Strawther, Ricky Council, or Terrance Shannon pulled out of the draft and wanted to come to Carolina you, @DSouthr, and @What Would Jesus Do? would turn them down?

I'm confused at how we got to the point where our fans don't want us to add really good players. I think a lineup of Cadeau, Davis, Shannon, Ingram, and Bacot with Withers, Ryan, Washington, Wilcher, Wojcik, Trimble off the bench is a top team. I strongly suspect Hubert will pursue if we can get a TOP wing. That's the key; not just another guy to compete for minutes, but someone who actually helps put us over the top.

Cold Ian make the jump? If so, with all the surrounding experience would Ian solve the wing problem? Hubert has two ships left, plus Dunn may exit giving an extra ship.

With all the early season blow-outs, Bacot and RJ should not get more than then 25 minutes a game.

28 minutes would be ideal, that's an average of 14 of 20 minutes per half.
His body has broken down the last 2 years due to overuse and it will happen again unless HD uses the tools he's been blessed with.
It could also make Armando play harder knowing his minutes are reduced.

I could actually go lower than that Fla, I would have him around 25mins a game and RJ around 20. Tell you this right now, If we get Cadeau, when we get Cadeau, this team will have no choice but to get back to the breaking game, up tempo, Cadeau dictates tempo for games he plays in. Kid will pitch it ahead consistently and players will run the court knowing that. IN a up temp game 25mins is a lot more than it is in a half court slowed pace game.

There is not a coach in the country that would try to put Cadeau in to a constant half court offense, that would be absolute career suicide.

Jackson definitely looks good. But do we really still have a wing problem?

Whose minutes would he take? Ingram's? Ryan's? I want those guys on the floor. I don't think we need people to cut their minutes.

Like you, I definitely hope we can play Armando and RJ less this coming season. Not because I want them on the floor less, but because I want them to stay healthy and fresh. Armando around 25 and RJ around 30 would be a definite improvement over last season.

Even without Cadeau, I think we have the personnel to give RJ more breathing room. Seth and Dunn should improve and some say Wilcher has PG chops.

It won't be clear if the same can be said for Armando until we see how much we can get from Washington and High, but I'm optimistic that we can reduce the wear and tear on Armando, as well. Not to mention that if we can spread the floor better, he won't get beaten up so much.

Hubert was forced to play halfcourt because Caleb (and some other players) were incredibly careless with the ball when we ran fast breaks. Not to mention we had to play the starters heavy minutes bc the bench was so ineffective.

When Cadeau gets here, I fully expect more fast breaking.

It is sad that peeps usually reasonable keep taking shots at our coach. He played peeps limited minutes because he had no choice. Why would we assume he is so blind he wouldn't play an extended bench if the talent + the willingness to fit into team schemes was present??? Family continuously taking potshots at the coach distracts from the otherwise intelligent arguments on this thread!

If you read carefully, it becomes clear that SDung spends all of his time trying to discourage optimism in our teams and to encourage the idea that our coach and team are deficient! Try to find anything positive that is not immediately followed by some scathing criticism! It is hilarious when peeps point out that he often contradicts his own ideas whenever he sees an opportunity to troll!

I think the team has enough to be a serious contender right now and becomes even more potent once Cadeau arrives! I agree with the idea that adding a wing who expects to start day 1 might have a serious impact on chemistry even though I completely believe that you always take peeps with elite talent!

My understanding is that it is doubtful that Jack could have the grades to allow him to graduate now even if he wanted to reclass. He could have but had he started taking the online classes earlier but to finish them now could mean he has to shut down basketball activity and jump the classes hard and that is not likely to happen. Cadeau is on the other hand already prepped, he would have no issues graduating in time to reclass but he started prepping just in case his freshman year. .

Jackson isn't reclassing, unless something changes drastically.

The bench was ineffective because of how the bench has been managed the last two years.

I know I'm an old timer so don't jump all over me but I don't understand how these guys can just decide to reclassify. I'm pretty sure if i walked into my high school guidance counselor's office my junior year and said I want to skip my senior year and go right to college that it would be warmly welcomed. Heck, they probably would have sent me back a year. Oh how time's have changed.

Hubert said after his first year that he needed to do a better job playing the bench. He also talked in glowing terms about the players on the bench. I don't think it's unreasonable to point out that he didn't do what he said he would do and to talk about a trend in how he has coached.

They take night/summer/online courses to get the extra credits. Any regular student could probably do so, but most parents aren't rushing to get their kid into college a year earlier, as most kids don't have millions of dollars at risk for every year they're not in the NBA in their 20s.

It starts out with kids being held back earlier in life purely for athletic purposes. That's how they end up significantly older than their classmates. Cadeau has had this plan in motion for many years. The classwork is already done if he wants to reclassify. This wasn't a sudden decision. This is a plan that they have considered for a long time.

1. I disagree that he had no choice when it came to our bench. The staff got a pass the 1st year without developing the bench, but I'm not giving them one for Year two and going forward. I'm as big HD fan as any but Year 3 will tell me and many others if he should remain the head coach of this storied program.

2. I strongly agree about SDung, he's a sorry a** clown.

The bench was ineffective bc no one on the bench could make shots against teams except The Citadel.
The bench was ineffective because they were mismanaged and never effectively developed. Watch any Roy season and you’ll learn how your bench is developed. You take lumps early in the season and it pays dividends late in the season. Our bench usage was inconsistent, sporadic and demoralizing to the players.

I think the team has enough to be a serious contender right now and becomes even more potent once Cadeau arrives! I agree with the idea that adding a wing who expects to start day 1 might have a serious impact on chemistry even though I completely believe that you always take peeps with elite talent!
I disagree (of course). Two years ago, I was one of the only people here that said we had final four potential. I said we would go as far as Caleb Love took us. I said if Caleb is good, we can beat anyone.

Last year I said we would go as far as Caleb Love took us again. Two years ago, Caleb was really good. Last year, he was really bad and once it was evident he wasn’t the same player, it was evident we were going to be pretty bad. I don’t know how that’s trolling.

I’m also a defender of Hubert, lol. So I don’t know where that came from. I don’t think he’s perfect, but I’ve said I think it was hard to coach this team the last two years.

I disagree that I contradict myself too. I said that experience can be meaningless. Then I said I’m hopeful because for the transfers because I think skill figures it out and experienced skill figures it out quick. That doesn’t mean last year’s experienced team benefited from its experience. Two different things.

But it’s ok if you don’t like my posts. Lol.

I’ll admit I trolled one time. There was a game where people said Leaky is an NBA player because he played well in front of like 20 NBA scouts. The next game he went like 1/11 or something and I titled a threat LeAkY iS An NbA PlAYer!!! I’ll admit that was a troll.
