The bench was ineffective because they were mismanaged and never effectively developed. Watch any Roy season and you’ll learn how your bench is developed. You take lumps early in the season and it pays dividends late in the season. Our bench usage was inconsistent, sporadic and demoralizing to the players.
Roy also had some exceptional talent on the bench.
09 - had Ed Davis and would've had Tyler Zeller playing big minutes and those were 2 consensus 5* guys that would've started on 70% of the teams in the country as freshman.
10 - We weren't any good, but Henson got bench minutes and developed into a star, but was a consensus top 10 guy coming in
11 - Reggie Bullock was a 5*/top 15 recruit
12 - PJ Hairston and McAdoo were 5* recruits
13 - Brice wasn't a 5* but it was pretty apparent right away that he was extremely gifted offensively
14 - Isiah certainly developed over time, but he was a 5* talent coming in. Meeks is a guy who legit developed for four years.
15 - Berry and Pinson were 5* guys coming in
Is that realistic in today's transfer era to bring in 5* guys willing to sit on the bench and develop over 3/4 years? I don't know. But I do think it's unfair to compare Tyler Nickel not getting any minutes and Roy being willing to go through growing pains with Ed Davis, PJ Hairston, or Theo Pinson.
That isn't to say Hubert was flawless in how he handled the rotation last year. You obviously can't play dudes 35+ minutes every game without it costing you eventually. But I do think he had his hands tied last year with a roster that wasn't all that good, wasn't all that skilled.
