AJ: Simply Put, the Heels Have No Answers

Well, ole Roy was determijned that his successor be a former UNC player and was almost as determined that he be black. Stackhouse is an overgrown spoiled brat with a childish temper, while Hubert is a responsible and decent man. So there is that.

Basketball-first leagues and schools are always going to be totally destroyed by BIG TIME football, eventually. Those days of reckoning are hard upon us. So Hubert must accept the UNC must now get its football up toward BIG TIM, which means no new cash for basketball. Just accept that Bama and Auburn both, as well as others, will be richer basketball programs than UNC until UNC football gets rich. Hubert will be acceptable until then.

Hubert’s rotations still aren’t set. He’s in over his head. Hubert is an outstanding person and high character guy, but we are looking at 15 losses for the year at this point. The hire was a swing for the fences….and was a miss.
Why on earth would a basketball program of this caliber turn the reigns over to an inexperienced first time head coach? Makes zero sense. I don’t put this on Bubba Cunningham at all. He had nothing to do with this. Hubert is working with some limitations in the new age of college basketball but Carolina is just a poorly coached team. The defense has been horrendous and he hasn’t tried a zone once. Inexcusable. Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Late in the game Carolina switched a big onto a guard and boom a wide open 3 pointer. Saw it coming a mile away.

Agreed. Hubert is an outstanding person and very likable. We know Roy is loyal to a fault. Loyalty isn't bad, but we are talking about leading a top program of All-time, one of the best (if not best) college basketball jobs. You go for the best that fits your culture and values. You don't start your filter with who you can see in a current meeting.

There are two answers that would have us at 9 - 2 today:

RJ and EC must hit better than 25% of their three point shots. Many are wide open and within our offensive scheme.
Even 30 % gives us victories at KU, vs MSU, vs FL. 30% is not a lot to expect. Blame Hubert for that?

47 % of our rebounds are gathered by our guards. Hello, Bigs?

anybody at this point after watching the product we have on the floor 3.5 years in and listening to his press conferences are simply in denial or clinically insane. great human being, terrible head basketball coach at this level. roster management, scheme, rotations, etc is all around bad and he literally offers nothing of note in pressers when answering questions about what needs to change, etc. he is simply incapable of being successful in this role because he was never qualified or experienced enough for the role to begin with. fire his ass the day after this season ends. good news is that will likely be much sooner than we are used to.

I expect that HD was, and should still be, an excellent assistant coach. Football hired the best coach they could find. Time to do the same, or at least something different, for basketball.

It was a tactful podcast so kudos to Andrew and Jacob. However, I expect that means the seat is extremely hot for the coaching staff. When I'm objective, I believe that Hubert is doing his best. It was probably very unfair to him to give him the keys to UNC when he had no head coaching experience.

Hubert is a great man, loves the university and is well respected. However, Roy and Bubba allowed this to happen and it’s just unfortunate that they put a guy with zero head coaching experience in this spot where you likely will end up having to fire him. Carolina isn’t a training ground job for coaches. This is the highest level job in the country, so you hire the highest level proven coach you can get.

Hubert was never qualified for this job, he needed to leave Roy’s bench to get head coaching experience and prove himself before being a legit candidate and that didn’t happen.

We are now stuck in mediocrity and if the season plays out with missing the tournament, I think Bubba has to make a change. You don’t miss the tournament 2 out of 4 years at Carolina and keep your job. And four years is ample time to make an educated decision on whether the hire was good or bad.
