Another Adam Lucas gem...

I am still somewhat raw over that one. No baseball game ever played could make me feel one iota better about it either.

I DO hope Jackson comes back. I AM really glad Kennedy came back. I am also relieved that basketball won't be starting for quite a while though.

The two ugliest words I can think of are "Michael Stephens" (no-good %$#$^)

he worked the 2015 national championship game between Wisconsin and dook with that terrible out of bounds call that awarded the ball to dook with just under two minutes left. he gifted a national championship to dook and stole one from carolina with his double standard for contact fouls. in short, he's a new england dookie

Should never be allowed to referee another game. And the scary part is he passed the NCAA's evaluation process to be an asssigned ref for Natty games. Something is seriously wrong with the process.

Was on an aircraft carrier in the Med when we lost in the finals to Marquette. That one hurt. Was on Franklin Street in '82 for the loss to IU in the finals. That one hurt too. And the '98 team was probably my second favorite team.

But the '16 team is my favorite team of all time because of everything they endured and the love able cast of characters involved. We've fielded much more talented teams that I loved, but none captured my heart like last year's team.

So I still haven't watched a replay or even highlights of the season. If I didn't feel we were denied a fair shot, I would probably have put it behind me. But I do and I haven't been able to do so.

Most gut wrenching sports loss of my 62 years on this planet. Gonna be a looooong time coming.

Great Lucas article, as always.

The Marquette loss was very tough because I felt dean made a big tactical error. The Utah and IU (Jordan loss) were even worse because we were so much better than either of those teams and I took so much abuse from the ABCers after those losses.

Tell me more about the attitude Gary. What did the coaches feel was going on with him?
I posted this a while back. I heard thru a pretty good source that the coaching staff was none too happy about Stephens being assigned the game (their experiences with him have not been positive) and were on alert that he might have a chip on his shoulder, and that the players were told that and/or got that vibe during the game.

IU loss in the finals was '81.

bingo!

that, and not finishing at the end of the half.
So now we have to make all of our FTs --- in a game where we shot half as many as we should have --- to win a basketball game? Gotcha.
Bingo my ass.
And it's awfully hard to finish when someone is riding their knee into your back and driving you into the damned cheerleaders.
GMAFB with that garbage.

did i say all?...hitting ones at key moments would be ideal.

finishing meaning not giving them an opp with 4 seconds left.

GMAFB, calm down and read before you assume so much.

Yep, my bad. Was there again in '82 when we won. Much better experience.

Me too, can't remember the name of that grocery store on Franklin St. but I drank a 6 pack in line waiting to check out. Lines were to the back of the store, paid for what I still had but honestly can't remember if I paid for the 6 pack I drank before I got to the checkout.

carolina didn't play a perfect game, i agree. but don't overlook how discouraging it is to see refs favoring your opponent, allowing them to push and shove and hack the shooter with impunity, while your own defense is paralyzed by touch fouls. i wonder what would have happened if carolina had used villanova's strategy of fouling hard on every play. maybe refs wouldn't call them because constant free throws do not help tv ratings. maybe roy's blunder was to coach good defense playing by the rules. how naive.

I'm pissed but what's done is done, hopefully we meet up with Nova again in '17.Would love to beat them the same way with JB making the shot.:D

Fowlers maybe?

You said finishing at the end of the half and you clearly meant JJ, so GMAFB with the revisionism.
And BTW, on that last shot of the half the guy double-dribbled in front of God and everybody before he took it.

Guys, really, I was over this game a couple days after it was played, got my venting out and I am done with it. I am not comfortable reliving it all over again, it sucks, it happened, it is done. I am more in to celebrating the great season we had at this point and looking forward. We can fuss about the way the refs called that game but really, where does that get us? It just keeps us upset, it takes away form the effort both teams played with. You can't blame those kids from Villinova, they played their hearts out and all history will show is they won that game.

You have to adapt to the way a game is called and yeah, some times you have to adapt and the other team doesn't have to, it isn't always fair. But that should not shock us, we have played duke how many times in cameron? It is what it is and what it is is over, lets not let this take away from the effort or the season either team had. of all the NCAA teams ONLY 2 got to play that final game and we were one of those 2 left standing in the end. Out of all the teams in the NCAA D-1 only 1 achieved more than we did and I celebrate that rather than morn.

IT IS A GREAT TIME TO BE A TAR HEEL !

Well coach williams said jj should have finished stronger. So evidently u think his opinion is garbage as well huh? I'd say u oughta try that tough guy schtick with him and put him in his place over what "really happened" on that lay up but actually it would have about as much effect on him as it does in here. A good laugh.

This is all a pile of crap here. Are you so desperate to be right that you are now making believe this is actually how that play went down? There was no knee to the back, no one flew into the cheerleaders. If JJ had come to a more controlled jump stop he would have had Josh Hart on top of him and forced the refs to call the foul. Instead all his momentum was was moving him towards the out of bounds so that what little upper body contact he did receive went uncalled. It's not like he got knocked on his ass or had anyone's knee in his back. A complete jump stop is the sound play with defenders, especially athletic ones, right on your tail. I'm surprised that with all of your supposed coaching Intel and vast basketball knowledge you wouldn't know that. GMAFB with that garbage.

I wish he would have dunked it. That isn't the point. He went under to draw a foul and it wasn't called. So you want to blame JJ for getting fouled and it not getting called? Nice.

And BTW: Roy was being diplomatic, in case that flew over your head (which apparently doesn't take much).

You're coming back at me again? Now that's funny. JJ leaned in so that quite literally the only way to block that shot was to foul.
His "momentum"? That momentum had a lot of help. GMAFB.

Coming back? I told you I'd always be here to set you straight when you start getting it wrong. So that's going to keep me busy of course. And here you have at least stopped your over the top embellishment of that play. No knee in the back as you suggested, and no one knocked into the cheerleaders.

So that leaves us with, "JJ leaned in so that quite literally the only way to block that shot was to foul." Is this your modified position on that play now? If so, then I'll agree to stop knocking the smell off your verbal turds and let you off the hook with that statement. You are part of the 'We never got beat by a more talented team' club so I do expect some of that from you. And you did notice I said there was a little upper body contact, but your not always getting that call when you finish weakly like that.

What flew over your head with the greatest of ease is that coach has no prob diplomatically making it clear when hes unhappy with a call/no call. He never even HINTED that a foul shoulda been called. So once again, with your permission of
Course, i'll defer to his opinion over yours. It was a great CLEAN defensive play by the nova guy on a soft underhand layup.

You're (not surprisingly) unfamiliar with the sensation of generating momentum by running full speed down a court. Or the fact that a "knee in the back" to someone jumping after running full speed would send them flying and sprawling out of control. (See kendall marshall's reaction to being fouled against creighton) Not the case with jj. He laid the ball up smoothly and gracefull landed where his MOMENTUM took him and turned and went up court.
