...not to mention "gym-rat".White. Typical "coded" words for white players would be scrappy, sneaky athletic, coach on the floor, etc.

I think he was injecting humor, not race. Don't take it so serious. Why does race have to be injected in a discussion of how our kids played in this jamboree? It just is not necessary, we should be able to discuss the play of these kids without concern for the color of their skin.

So...this conversation here may not be possible because of how tightly some of you pucker up when race comes up..but I'm genuinely curious, is it a north/south thing?
Dave and Mike are extremely uncomfortable talking about race. Is it an older (50+) white guy from the south thing? Which I would get, you guys have seen the horrors of some very ugly racism down there, whereas I really haven't. I mean this in no disrespect at all, I'm just curious. I'm someone born and raised in NYC area and in my 30s...my friends and I joke about race A LOT. And not me and my white friends, friends of literally every background. I'm curious if we had lived in NC/SC/VA/GA during the 70s if we'd feel differently about it.
I know this definitely isn't the forum and you guys have shown nothing to make me think this convo can be had here...but maybe you can prove me wrong. If not, carry on, go Heels.
That has a lot to do with it. It's also a PC thing. A lot of people today are just afraid of being called a racist, so they shy away from things that might be seen as racist. Even if it's something as simple as jokes about coded words. Also, the humor level on this board is at zero, so a lot of people here probably couldn't even recognize the jokes.So...this conversation here may not be possible because of how tightly some of you pucker up when race comes up..but I'm genuinely curious, is it a north/south thing?

I already describe what "coded" meant. He was saying it as a joke. I thought it was pretty obvious. Guess not.Andrew Carter ✔ @_andrewcarter
"Man, Andrew Platek is going to receive lots of coded commentary about how scrappy he is in the coming years."
So this represents humor on some way? So what is humorous about the term "coded commentary"? Please share with me what you think "coded commentary" means so I may be able to see any degree of humor in its reference. It reads to me not as humor but as a racial comment on how white players are described. Frankly, I don't like coded commentary in any manner but it is absolutely not needed in discussing how a kid plays. What he said would have been fine had he not injected the "coded commentary" bit.
I'm 58 and white. Graduated high school in '77. Me and my friends, black white and more recently Hispanic, have always joked about race regularly. It seems to be the next generation that has the problems. And FYI, I have not see anything horrible or ugly between our races until the last decade or so. We grew up playing ball together, going to school together, church together, etc...Still play golf together, go out to eat together, church together, etc... I don't need codes to describe an athlete.So...this conversation here may not be possible because of how tightly some of you pucker up when race comes up..but I'm genuinely curious, is it a north/south thing?

I thought it referred to race, but didn't want to jump to that conclusion. Which is why I asked.I already describe what "coded" meant. He was saying it as a joke. I thought it was pretty obvious. Guess not.
When you look at both tweets together you can tell it's a joke. There's nothing racists about it. It's just a running joke about words that people usually use to describe white players. Just do a search for Luke here and you'll see people say how he's a gym rat, surprisingly athletic, etc. I don't think anyone is a racist for saying that though, it's just a subconscious thing. I think you are just trying to over analyze what was said and why it was said.I thought it referred to race, but didn't want to jump to that conclusion. Which is why I asked.
Seems to be the consensus that he was, in fact, referring to race.
But was it a joke?
I'm with @DSouthr on this one. Doesn't strike me as humor.
The thing is that I don't really know Andrew Carter well enough to know if he was aiming at humor. I mean he could have meant it as humor but swung and missed (for me and some others here). Nor is it clear to me what kind of humorous point he might have been attempting. Was he joking about white players? About racists? About people who don't want to be thought of as racists but want to make sure everyone knows they are talking about race?
BTW, I'm an old fart who was not raised in the South. So maybe it's an old fart thing, but not just an old-fart-from-the-South thing.
Of course we should, but unfortunately it seldom seems to work that way.Why does race have to be injected in a discussion of how our kids played in this jamboree? It just is not necessary, we should be able to discuss the play of these kids without concern for the color of their skin.
Agreed, it was just a joke about racial stereotypes, and that's often the best way to defuse such things. When you look at both tweets together you can tell it's a joke. pln3023 made a totally innocent comment, "Lineups shouldn't matter. We should beat UNCG regardless," and you were triggered and responded with two rude comments. If you disagree and think that the comment is ridiculous, disagree respectfully or let it be and don't respond. That is the noble thing to do, that is the UNC thing to do. The fact that you were not called out on your rudeness reflects poorly on this forum. I am responding because you attacked inappropriately and your behavior must be respectfully corrected for the welfare of this community. Please be respectful.
Agreed. This disrespect by FlaTarHeel to fellow UNC fans is all too common. He/she doesn't seem to know how to disagree with someone without attacking their character/intelligence. It detracts from the whole board in my opinion.pln3023 made a totally innocent comment, "Lineups shouldn't matter. Interesting that you refer to those concerned about racism as "easily offended." As far as I can tell, none of us was offended, merely concerned. Is "easily offended" more "code"?As I see it, Andrew Carter's tweet was meant to be humorous and definitely not racist.
All of those so easily offended need to relax and breathe, and resolve to not be so easily triggered. And do not see racism when racism does not exist, which actually foments perpetual racism.
Please don't give up on a fellow TarHeel, as we continue to root for UNC forever !! None of us are perfect, and many of us have erred with our past posts. Forgive, forget and move on. At least that is what I say to my beloved wife !!Give up on FTH.
The guy made fun of Jimmy V's wife on the main board. He's just a terrible person that happens to root for the same team we do unfortunately.
There were far too many comments to merely attribute them to "concern" rather than the more appropriate "offended." Your retort is clearly revisionist. No worries here as I am UNC FOREVER !!Interesting that you refer to those concerned about racism as "easily offended." As far as I can tell, none of us was offended, merely concerned.
