Any updates on the Jamboree today??

Why does race have to be injected in a discussion of how our kids played in this jamboree? It just is not necessary, we should be able to discuss the play of these kids without concern for the color of their skin.
I think he was injecting humor, not race. Don't take it so serious.

"Man, Andrew Platek is going to receive lots of coded commentary about how scrappy he is in the coming years."

So this represents humor on some way? So what is humorous about the term "coded commentary"? Please share with me what you think "coded commentary" means so I may be able to see any degree of humor in its reference. It reads to me not as humor but as a racial comment on how white players are described. Frankly, I don't like coded commentary in any manner but it is absolutely not needed in discussing how a kid plays. What he said would have been fine had he not injected the "coded commentary" bit.

So...this conversation here may not be possible because of how tightly some of you pucker up when race comes up..but I'm genuinely curious, is it a north/south thing?

Dave and Mike are extremely uncomfortable talking about race. Is it an older (50+) white guy from the south thing? Which I would get, you guys have seen the horrors of some very ugly racism down there, whereas I really haven't. I mean this in no disrespect at all, I'm just curious. I'm someone born and raised in NYC area and in my 30s...my friends and I joke about race A LOT. And not me and my white friends, friends of literally every background. I'm curious if we had lived in NC/SC/VA/GA during the 70s if we'd feel differently about it.

I know this definitely isn't the forum and you guys have shown nothing to make me think this convo can be had here...but maybe you can prove me wrong. If not, carry on, go Heels.

I am not uncomfortable at all discussing race, I just do not believe folks are willing and maybe not even able to rationally discuss it. Folks want to dictate what you are supposed to say, think, and believe and if not exactly down the allowed party line you are shut down as a fool if not worse. Race is not a joking matter because everyone is not allowed the same joking leeway now are they. The result is everyone runs to the extremes and no one is willing to broach it with an open mind truly wanting to understand other views and opinions. Personally, I look at very little thru the lends of race and I would think that should be the goal of everyone but it isn't and it isn't across the board. So no, I do not believe it possible to have a rational discussion about it.

That has a lot to do with it. It's also a PC thing. A lot of people today are just afraid of being called a racist, so they shy away from things that might be seen as racist. Even if it's something as simple as jokes about coded words. Also, the humor level on this board is at zero, so a lot of people here probably couldn't even recognize the jokes.

I already describe what "coded" meant. He was saying it as a joke. I thought it was pretty obvious. Guess not.

I'm 58 and white. Graduated high school in '77. Me and my friends, black white and more recently Hispanic, have always joked about race regularly. It seems to be the next generation that has the problems. And FYI, I have not see anything horrible or ugly between our races until the last decade or so. We grew up playing ball together, going to school together, church together, etc...Still play golf together, go out to eat together, church together, etc... I don't need codes to describe an athlete.

I thought it referred to race, but didn't want to jump to that conclusion. Which is why I asked.

Seems to be the consensus that he was, in fact, referring to race.

But was it a joke?

I'm with @DSouthr on this one. Doesn't strike me as humor.

The thing is that I don't really know Andrew Carter well enough to know if he was aiming at humor. I mean he could have meant it as humor but swung and missed (for me and some others here). Nor is it clear to me what kind of humorous point he might have been attempting. Was he joking about white players? About racists? About people who don't want to be thought of as racists but want to make sure everyone knows they are talking about race?

BTW, I'm an old fart who was not raised in the South. So maybe it's an old fart thing, but not just an old-fart-from-the-South thing.

When you look at both tweets together you can tell it's a joke. There's nothing racists about it. It's just a running joke about words that people usually use to describe white players. Just do a search for Luke here and you'll see people say how he's a gym rat, surprisingly athletic, etc. I don't think anyone is a racist for saying that though, it's just a subconscious thing. I think you are just trying to over analyze what was said and why it was said.

Of course we should, but unfortunately it seldom seems to work that way.

Agreed, it was just a joke about racial stereotypes, and that's often the best way to defuse such things.

That being said, let's be real --- these racial stereotypes are by definition, well, racist --- subconscious or not. Now, they may not be mean-spirited or bigoted but they nonetheless serve to muck up our discourse --- whether about sports or ordinary life.

For example, you mentioned how Luke has been described, and if we want to be honest, that stereotyping of him as a player by many was insulting and frankly dumb. But hey, going back to the tweet in question, sometimes the best way to shine light on something dumb is to just make fun of its endemic absurdity.

Bottom line is no one should be upset at Carter's tweet. The fact that stereotyping is being made fun of is, if anything, a positive step.

Lunch pail type kid.

First one in, last one out.

Coach on the floor.

Tough as nails.

Gives maximum effort.

pln3023 made a totally innocent comment, "Lineups shouldn't matter. We should beat UNCG regardless," and you were triggered and responded with two rude comments. If you disagree and think that the comment is ridiculous, disagree respectfully or let it be and don't respond. That is the noble thing to do, that is the UNC thing to do. The fact that you were not called out on your rudeness reflects poorly on this forum. I am responding because you attacked inappropriately and your behavior must be respectfully corrected for the welfare of this community. Please be respectful.

As I see it, Andrew Carter's tweet was meant to be humorous and definitely not racist.

All of those so easily offended need to relax and breathe, and resolve to not be so easily triggered. And do not see racism when racism does not exist, which actually foments perpetual racism.

It’s a shame some of those descriptions have evolved into a stereotyping vernacular because you could just as easily use some of them for players of mixed/African heritage:
"Coach on the floor" - Marcus Paige
"Deceptively Athletic" - (sometimes) Kennedy Meeks
"Lunch Pail Type" - David Noel, Jawad Williams, Deon Thompson
"First one in, Last one out/Gym Rat, etc" - Joel Berry
And so on....

But yeah, no problem with what Carter tweeted, if anything he was mocking the stereotyping whilst complementing Platek.

Agreed. This disrespect by FlaTarHeel to fellow UNC fans is all too common. He/she doesn't seem to know how to disagree with someone without attacking their character/intelligence. It detracts from the whole board in my opinion.

Give up on FTH.

The guy made fun of Jimmy V's wife on the main board. He's just a terrible person that happens to root for the same team we do unfortunately.

After all the negative articles Andrew Carter wrote about UNC etc. We shouldn't give him any benefit of doubt about his tweets ;-) lol

Wow. How can we let this turn so badly. We just got to watch the Tar Heels PLAY basketball! I was there and so geeked I almost couldn't contain myself. I noticed we "lost" one of the 13 minute segments of a game and I was slightly disappointed, but I loved the overall play of our team. Lineups ALWAYS matter and we were playing teams that can beat you. Any team can get up and play us even for a few minutes, but if we played any of them for a full game we would blow their doors off. Roy plays all kinds of peeps and even let TP run point for a bit. It was interesting, but at times a little disorganized.

I saw a team that has combinations that could contend right now and other combos that couldn't beat a high school team. I must admit that 7th didn't look ready and he might not get the start at point I have anticipated. (he still might though) Felton is awesome, but really needs to pick up the D. Platek can play and you don't need code words to describe his game. He is a baller! I love something about ALL our bigs and I am excited most by their coachability! Miller needs strength; Manley needs conditioning and his motor revved; Huff needs some stickum; and Brooks needs to remember he is a 5. The team plays the game like it is fun and they love each other and THIS is the main reason this will be a fun year! When Cam and Felton figure out team D, they will both be monsters! KW is fine and his shot will fall. Maye is really confident and is a true leader on the floor.

Interesting that you refer to those concerned about racism as "easily offended." As far as I can tell, none of us was offended, merely concerned. Is "easily offended" more "code"?

Please don't give up on a fellow TarHeel, as we continue to root for UNC forever !! None of us are perfect, and many of us have erred with our past posts. Forgive, forget and move on. At least that is what I say to my beloved wife !!

There were far too many comments to merely attribute them to "concern" rather than the more appropriate "offended." Your retort is clearly revisionist. No worries here as I am UNC FOREVER !!
