I think most of us like how the portal is going, so far, but are we winning yet? Where by winning, I mean our incoming players are a net improvement over those who left?

I included Drake and Catchings even though their fates are still unclear.

Here are some numbers, but they don't tell the whole story, of course. The On3 and 247 numbers are their ranks at the moment.

Same table but with Per-40 numbers, which are probably a better basis for comparison.

I prefer the first chart, not as depressing . Seeing Washington at a double/double in the per 40 chart is just a reminder of what could have been. Also Ian as a 20 point scorer. Neither really showed the consistency to be on the court those extended minutes. Kind of the same with Cadeau at 9 assists a game per 40, those his bench minutes were usually coaching decision or self-inflicted.

Minor edit - Evans’ TS% was actually 64.5% last year. Hoping we don’t lose Drake Powell though sounds like we will. The losses of Jackson and D. Powell both would really sting, but we’re doing what we can to offset them so far. Both guys are likely to eventually make the NBA though, that’s a tough amount of raw talent to backfill.

I think at PG and Big we’ve done pretty well. If we land Catchings we’ll have improved our overall length and defensive versatility. It’d be really nice if either IJack or DPowell stay in the end though! If they both go, we’ll need a bit more scoring punch to come from somewhere.

I’d have to see the freshmen at least play and one of them be a hit but as it stand today we are slightly a better team right now than we were last year

Thanks. My eye went to the wrong line. Now fixed.

For those who are curious, here's Cade at the end of this season vs when we got him from Belmont.

If I look at this from the aspect of: Have we put together a better team than we had last season, hard call, I think we have (I am already including Catchings) but the proof will come when they all play together. If they fit together like I think they may we could be looking at a sweet 16 team. But if Dixon comes in and gives us some un-expected shooting, if James Brown takes a strong soph jump as Veesaar's back up, High show us he has developed, and we can limit the careless TOs, we could develop in to a real final 4 threat. Can Hubert guide that with better coaching decisions may be the larger question.

To be fair, they won’t rank him until after he’s been evaluated but I would imagine he won’t be very high at all.

Idk how much the depth will make the difference in the season outcome. Hubert is in a pressure cooker. He’s likely going to do things he’s comfortable with. Probably means the team goes as far as the starters take him.

On paper I don’t think it’s all that close to a Final Four team unless a starter is significantly better than anticipated.

Michigan is winning the Portal, followed by the likes of UCLA, Mami, et al.

As for who's NOT winning the portal, I have to feel sorry for NC State. Six seniors (including all the starters) are gone. And 7 others entered the portal. Old math says that's everybody.

So far they have 2 incoming freshmen who I guess haven't decommitted, plus 2 guys following the new coach from McNeese St.

We need 3 more guys.. another point guard, wing, and big man.. I'd be happy with Lewis, Catchings, and Stevenson. Final 4 threat easily and possibly one of the best UNC teams since Hansbrough years.

Catching and our Ian Jackson basically had the same season with the usual up and down as freshmen.

Vessaar is the reason we are better, because without a quality big we were always a .500 team (I contribute all of our failures last season to not having a big).

PG is hard to call, because in the right situation EC may lead the nation in assist. Our new PG is a better shooter, but not a better PG. Example Curry is better shooter, but Magic better PG.

Add the guard from Israel .. he would be my pick then Catchings and or Stevenson

I'm not opposed to Stevenson, but do we need him? And if so, in what capacity?

[I'm assuming we get Catchings, High rejoins the team, and Lubin sticks around.]

While this thread was aimed at how UNC is doing in the portal, it's interesting to look at other teams.

At the moment, 247 lists us as 13th best in the portal. Topping the nation is Michigan (where Elliot is being joined by some good portal bigs) followed by Louisville.

We're 3rd in the ACC after Louisville and Miami. And I imagine we'll take a good jump up when we land Catchings.

Within the ACC, FSU currently has the most players from the portal with 5. Miami, Syracuse and Virginia each have 4. Duke, Georgia Tech, Notre Dame and Stanford currently have none.

I just read an article that states we now have a Top 5 recruiting class in the nation.

Right now.

Including recruits and Transfer portal.

Thing with Cadeau is, we are not having to replace the potential of what Cadeau may be able to do, we are replacing his production. His talent may not be replaceable but his production is rather easy to replace. For example, his 6 assists are game is eye popping but his 3 TOs a game mitigates that to a 2:1 A:T, that is easy to replace, 32% shooting un-guarded treys, again, not hard at all to replace. Just a couple examples of course but potential does not win games, production does that.

What are we even doing here? Lest we forget, 2/1 ratio has been UNC's stated goal since friggin Dean was here. And FYI again, Ray Felton only did it one season and was below it for his career, not to mention Eliot's ratio was skewed down by an incompetent home stat guy. So, let's please just stop once and for all with this overblown nonsense about TOs. Ray was a terrific PG who made things happen and so is Eliot, and those sort of guys are gonna have some TOs amid the creating. Period. End of story.

Now, with that said, your point is correct that we didn't get the full Cadeau, but let's be clear that was malpractice by the coaching staff. Holding back a guy like that is like hiring Thor to eradicate villains but saying, "sorry, you can't bring your hammer... or your axe". And yes, he was held back.

And hell, if Hubert ain't gonna fix his system, having an elite PG is pretty much the proverbial tits-on-a-boar-hog.

My god dude stop this bs…You are so stupid with this….

You were wrong he is not that guy…He can’t shoot man…

? For you Moe….Who is better Coby White or EC…

Completely minimizing ECs nose for assists and IQ in that area whilst he was literally mismanaged for 2 seasons then crying that he can't shoot is naive if not dumb. Ed Cota was no shooter and for a minute neither was Kendall Marshall. They had much more capable targets than EC. We will be lucky if our current options at the 1 can fill the EC void when its very likely he would have had a good upcoming season.
