Are We Winning the Portal?

If we get High, that's fine. We just need another big.
I don't think we'll add another big, and I'm struggling to see why you think we need one.

Center: Veesaar, Lubin, Brown
PF: Wilson, Catchings, High

Seems quite crowded and brimming with talent to me. Veesaar's a stud. Lubin is going to be one of the best backup centers in the nation. Catchings can play the 3 too, but is probably best as a small ball 4. And then you have Wilson.

Our problem is the backcourt. Evans is a good PG, but likely not elite. We have no real backup PG. Trimble is a bit of a stretch as a SG as he's light on size and, you know... shooting. Otherwise we have a relatively unproven Jonathan Powell and some freshman.

To me if this team ends up disappointing it's because that backcourt just isn't good enough. We probably need one more player there unless everything pans out perfectly with Evans/Trimble/Powell/Dixon.

Sounds good but with no word from Catchings=ouch.

My god dude stop this bs…You are so stupid with this….

You were wrong he is not that guy…He can’t shoot man…

? For you Moe….Who is better Coby White or EC…
What a dumb question, and sadly you don't know the answer.

And every single word I've posted about this is true.

I think he was saying we need one more big - which could be High. Not High AND another big, but High OR another big.

As for the rest, I'd be more comfortable if we an a solid backup PG. There are a couple good ones from smaller schools that we might not want to trust with the starting job, but might be able to handle it if they had to. I mentioned Samage Teel in another thread. Not saying he's that guy, but take a look. He probably wants a starting role at a better school, but he might take a backup role at a great school. Who knows?

Kensucky added another big 6'11 guy .. guess the 7 foot soon to be freshman might not play as much ... HD recruited him hard only to lose to the pope ! $$

As I understand it he gave the right word to the staff while he was on campus. Just hafta wait and hope nothing has come up to complicate that.
Does Catchings have any other visits scheduled?

Is it down to us and Georgia, with us in the lead?

My guess, as he hasn't popped for GA, is that details of the NIL are being worked out.

I as well believe we need another big man and I do not consider Catchings as that, he is more a long 3 or stretch 4. I feel like we need a big bodied big man, we have the slimmer guys, I really like Veesaar but I would like a body built to play in a overtly physical game deep in the paint. That is what we had with Bacot, a big man that could play thru the physicality that you see from a lot of teams, especially those in the SEC or Big 10. We don't have that, Lubin is as close as we have and he is maybe 6'8" it is hard for him to match those 7ft 250lbs bruisers.

Correct. I see Catchings as mainly a wing and I'm not all in on High until he proves otherwise. Give me another security blanket.

With 15 scholarships, we ought to use one on another 7 footer. Even if he's a project.
I have no objection to that as long as it doesn't force anyone into the portal.

My top priority would be to retain Drake, but it doesn't sound promising on that front.

The other worry (assuming Drake leaves) is what if Catchings isn't 100% or as good as we hope. That's why I wouldn't mind going after another heavy duty (i.e., not short or scrawny) SF. The guy from Alabama (Reid) or the one from FSU (Watkins) look just right.

A big body, content with limited or emergency minutes is fine, would help for depth. I think it is clear, we are going to spread the floor though. Veesaar played in that at Zona. Catchings agreeing is vital. He is going to be seen as the shooter/slasher threat.

I think a backup/solid point capable guy is still high on the list. Find one willing for the role.

No point going after kannon catching…. Would love to know what happened. Day by day we get closer and closer to Indiana/UCLA status.. wonder what all the excuses will be , “not the right fit for Hubert’s system” “wanted to much money” “not a good fit”

Maybe Drake is coming back or Georgia offered more $$

Indiana has been to one Final Four in the past 33 years.

winning? you call this winning? we are signing back ups and single digit scorers at this point. should’ve fired hubert when we had the chance and moved on. nobody great wants to come play for hubert and whatever shitty, underachieving system he runs.

Indiana has been to one Final Four in the past 33 years.
And I want to say they have missed the tournament more than making it for nearly two decades, something like 10 out of the last 18 years missing the tourney altogether, with maybe 2 sweet 16 appearances out of the less then half invitations they did get.

Hubert/Tanner have come up big in the portal and turned the roster over completely. If this team is to achieve its heights, Lubin and Trimble will not be in at closing time of the first dook game. It sets up fine in multiple aspects as they are in their last year with Hubert. Veesaar and Evans are significant talent upgrades and have two years to move the program back into the limelight of sweet sixteen talk. This roster has 4 or 5 players for both the frontcourt(what a reversal) and the backcourt positions. Hubert has convincingly won the portal battle. The lineup variations are immense so Hubert with his job on the line will have choices to make next season. Even without Drake, this lineup is loaded. Any chance we are gonna look for a one year veteran backup PG? Seems we could use one.

Deleted Catchings.

Added Stevenson.

Switched to numerical ratings instead of ranks.

The frontcourt talent has been significantly improved. The backcourt talent is significantly less. Unless the freshman guards are pretty to really good from day one. And I don't think Hubert's ever had a freshman who has been really good from day one.

Maybe it all fits better in the end.

Whether he won the portal or not, we'll see next January/February.

I can think of 3 of Hubert's freshmen who I feel were good from day 1. Just my opinion, but these guys:

Drake
Elliot*
Seth**

The problem is that only Drake didn't backslide after their good start. This is part of the reason I now question Hubert's ability to develop his players.

The coming season's freshman guards aren't as high-ranked out of HS as Drake, Elliot or even Seth, so your fears that they may not be ready to make an impact are probably warranted. But there are 2 of them, so the odds aren't too bad that 1 will be serviceable.

*Elliot scored in double digits his first 7 games - including against Kansas, Auburn and MSU - while also averaging nearly 6 assists.

**I think people forget just how good Seth looked until the Virginia game of his freshman year. No, maybe not a star yet, but impressive. He was even on some too-early mock draft lists. The Virginia game Humpty-Dumptied him. And the staff couldn't put him back together again (or maybe didn't try).

If we do not bring in anyone else, I think we will bring in 1 more, I think we have upgraded from last season. The one thing we absolutely had to do was get longer as a team and we hve for sure achieved that and spread it around to every floor position.

Our back court last season had a ton of talent but talent does not always equal production, you win games from production not talent. Evans may not have the talent of Cadeau but he produces. Seth may not be the jump shooter RJ was but he produces. Jack played great for 7 games but once teams figured out they needed to keep a quicker guy on him Jack faded. Both RJ and Jack took a lot of bad shots, made some of them but when you tag your hopes of winning on bad shots dropping you are buying fools gold most times.

Now I am torn, do we bring in a big time catch and shoot guy, do we bring in more of a physical banger, I may tilt now more to the catch anfd shoot guard because Jarin bring us another 6'11" guy to go with Veesaar and Lubin but don't forget about James Brown and High, guys that is a LOT of length in our front court, I think now IF we bring in another guy it will be a strong outside jump shooter and frankly, we may already have that guy in Dixon.

And JPowell looks more like a SG to my eye.

FSU's Watkins or Alabama's Reid look good to me. And there are others.
JPowell is absolutely a small forward, I think folks should be more excited we have him, I see him as a solid rotation guy, especially with his 3pt shooting and really strong defense.

As the roster is coming together I’d like to know what the predicted/expected results will be. ACC predicted standing? Make tournament? Sweet 16?

Agreed. But I'd settle for a preview of starters, backups and PT. If we're done now and Drake doesn't return, how does it look to you?
