UNC’s Bacot, FSU’s Cleveland Notch ACC Men’s Basketball Weekly Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – North Carolina junior forward/center Armando Bacot has been selected the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, and Florida State forward Matthew Cleveland earned Freshman of the Week honors.

Bacot notched Player of the Week honors for the third time this season (Jan. 10 and 17), while Cleveland was named Freshman of the Week for the second time this season (Jan. 3).

ACC men’s basketball weekly honors are determined by a vote of a 15-member media panel and announced on Mondays throughout the regular season.

Bacot averaged 20.0 points, 16.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks in wins over Louisville (70-63) and NC State (84-74). A native of Richmond, Virginia, he shot 17-for-21 (81%) and was 6-for-9 at the free-throw line. Bacot became the first Tar Heel ever to have at least 20 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks in a game when he had game highs in points (28), rebounds (18) and blocks (5) in the Saturday win at NC State. It was his 22nd double-double and 23rd game with 10 or more rebounds, which tied the UNC single-season record. The 18 rebounds tied the UNC record against NC State (Billy Cunningham first had 18 in 1965). Bacot also was 6-for-8 from the floor and had 12 points and a game-high 15 rebounds in the home win over Louisville.

Cleveland averaged 19.0 points and 5.5 rebounds in games at Boston College and Virginia. The Atlanta native scored the game-winning 3-point basket at the buzzer in the Seminoles’ 64-63 win at Virginia after the Florida State went down by 11 points with less than 11 minutes left to play. He scored nine points in the final 2:06 as FSU rallied from a nine-point deficit. He scored 14 of his 20 points in the second half. Cleveland was FSU’s leading scorer in both games last week with 20 at Virginia and 18 at Boston College while playing 37 minutes in both contests.
