Need a verdict from the board here. Seems like we might have covered this before, but how do you feel about birthday parties for a one-year old? I'm not talking family. I'm talking family, friends, and all their kids.

A one-year old's birthday is a celebration for the parents to get drunk for:

- keeping a human being that is completely dependent on you alive for a year
- dealing with a year of limited to no sleep

Do a BBQ or adult themed party, invite the grandparents to watch your child, get drunk.

Sound logic and accurate description from a non parent. Well done. Looks like you’re qualified to raise a kid to 1 year old. We’re going to have to do a more in depth review if you plan on going past 12 months though.

My crowd does it though I'm not a fan.

I'm just taking it age by age. Can't raise a 1 year old if you kill it before its birthday.

Both mine have officially moved out. My thing at christmas was to always do their stockings and the wife did the “big stuff”. I always found them Gag gifts, novelties, hard to find gadgets and so on. They’re both begging to keep the tradition going. But damn they’re 26 and 22 years old.

Keep the tradition going, it will make both you and them feel young . . you don't have to go overboard, but, Christmas stockings can be one of the most fun things to give at holiday time. Throw a scratch-off ticket, a prepaid oil change for their vehicle, movie tickets or something of that sort . . keep 'em guessing every year.

On father's day, I have a gift for each one of my kids, it's something I started when they were young and it continues on . .

I figure every day they're still breathing at the end of it, I've done my most important job.

So most days I get to feel pretty accomplished.

We did a party at 1, but it was just family. (Moot point for the second kid since they share a birthday and we were having a party one way or another.)

So what prompted my question was something at work. I work with a lovely woman who is a breast cancer survivor but can’t have children as a result of her treatments (as I understand it, don’t know details). A friend of hers acted as a surrogate for her and her husband which is an incredible story in itself. Anyway, the baby turns 1 in a few weeks and she’s planning a party. I normally think 1 is too young for a party but I’m giving her a pass based on the circumstances.

Bonus: she wants the day to be perfect so she’s baking “test” cakes in advance. She brought one into work today. We’re talking three layers, chocolate frosting, entirely from scratch. I’m a grown-ass man and I ate chocolate cake for breakfast.

Totally pointless, but don’t tell my wife I said that.

I don’t care all that much about mine. I celebrate my wife’s because I enjoy staying happy.

We only do family birthday get togethers. We don’t do real parties so then don’t feel bad about not caring about missing your party.
