BlueKick's AMA about America being American as f---

As I said on the Star Wars thread, in my experience, there's no such thing as luck. I was a member of Carolina Fever all four years, spent many hours at Carolina football, baseball, field hockey, soccer, lacrosse, swimming, wrestling, and gymnastics in exchange for points. Points turn into tickets, and people with the most get risers. Didn't have to give a single handsie for one of those tickets.

So, in other words

They didn't have that stuff when I was there. It was entirely arbitrary and even if you jumped through all the hoops and got a numbered bracelet and stood in line for hours on a Saturday morning you were still unlikely to get a ticket. They did have some kind of priority system for seniors for the duke game; I still didn't get one. Would have been an unpleasant experience anyway as per my previous post about what year that was.

Eh, on second thought I probably would opt with the handsies. Would be quicker and more interesting than your approach.
It may be quicker, but you're also assuming that the people accepting handsies from strangers are trustworthy people who are in possession of high quality seats for the UNC-Duke game and are willing to trade tickets for said handsie. I think you may give out a lot of handsies before you strike the middle of that Venn Diagram.

My last poast reminded me of this scene from Silicon Valley, which I recommend you watch, but probably with earphones if you're at work or around other people who may be easily offended.

Maybe I could work out some sort of a half now half later approach to ensure I wasn't getting duped.

I would like to change my earlier comment.

BlueKicks, you may have the misconception that American fans trade hand and blow jobs for tickets to sporting events. While some may engage is such behavior, it most certainly is not the norm.

In my opinion, Silicon Valley is hilarious. I mentioned in the Archer thread that i'm hit or miss on animated comedies. Well, I'm also hit or miss on nerd comedy. Big Bang Theory, to me, is godawful. But Silicon Valley does it for me. Really funny. When does the new season come on?

TJ Miller, math jokes, and dick jokes? These are my people. How have I never heard of this show before (don't answer that)? Good find, gotta check it out.

Same as THN, though. Don't find the first thing funny about Big Bang Theory. And I've tried. I really have.

Oh dude, you'd really like Silicon Valley. Really, really funny stuff, especially for nerdy dudes like us.

Alright, given that I've already been posting on here for way too long today, it can't hurt to stick around for the rest of the day either.

I'll go with the stuff I can think of right now... and just throw it out there. Pick and choose, if you're at all bothered. Let the sparks fly.
____________

- What state do you live in, and what do you like/dislike about living there?

- What's the biggest misconception about America that people from other countries hold?

- For those of you who've been to UNC (or any other school), how are the athletes treated on a normal day? Do they have to stop to take pictures every two minutes?

- What are three things you would tell someone to do, were they to visit North Carolina?

- Favourite sporting moment you've been around for in Tar Heel history?

1. Clarksville, Tennessee- I love it here. I have a huge family that live here, most within a few miles of me actually. The city has basically everything you need (too many Wal-Marts though with four Supercenters and three of those neighborhood ones) but isn't a big city. Decent downtown area and plenty of country as well.

2. That we are all wealthy.

3. I went to Austin Peay. The athletes are treated pretty normal there but it is a relatively small school. Like any school, the bigger sports have guys there that would not be otherwise though.

4. Never been to North Carolina. The wife and I are planning on going to a game at some point though. I would suggest playing golf, sex on the beach, and partying though.

5. Probably would have been the win last Monday. Maybe the 2009 title otherwise. Their are a few Duke games that would be up there though. Loved a few football games from this past year as well and the Miami upset years ago was pretty awesome.

You googled it. Just admit it.

You kids today. When I was your age, we just went around not knowing things.
Oh, that was actually my way of saying he's right, I had no idea what he was talking about. I guess I could google it, but that would deprive 71-00 the chance to prove that I didn't know it.

Bizarre OOTB fact of the day: I know cory's aunt. I worked as a financial auditor years ago and was assigned to an engagement with the hospital in Clarksville for three straight years. He and I have never met, and I'm not even sure he remembers this story (I used to post under a different user name, but it got wiped out). Oh, and edited to add that I live in Charlotte.

Another random aside, Clarksville has a very cool vibe. When I was there circa 2005 they had at least one brewery...not sure how many they might have now. That brewery made a darn good Guinness Draught knockoff. And yeah, I had it with fish and chips.

As for Silicon Valley, new season premieres April 24th, same day as Veep and Game of Thrones. I agree that it is very funny, definitely on my short list for favorite comedies. It has a great cast who all work really well together. TJ Miller has been giving Emmy quality work on there for sure.

As for Big Bang Theory, I hate that show. Not funny at all to me. Calling it a "nerd show" is technically true, but it's a show that laughs at nerds while acting like it's laughing with nerds, which wouldn't bother me as much if it was actually funny. Part of it is the laugh track after every line of dialogue. They just throw nerdy sounding things together in the hopes that it is funny. I really honestly hate that show with a passion.

Boom goes the dynamite.

Ya hear that, @UNC71-00? You caught you one.

At the risk of lowering everyone's opinion of me here (is that even possible?) I had to google it to find out. And I had heard of Jerry Garcia before that and knew he was a musician, but didn't know he was in the grateful dead until that Google search.

Well I get it now. If it makes me look better now, I did already know that Jerry Garcia was in Grateful Dead.

To be fair, I was 7 when he died.

Although I was well aware of the Ben & Jerry's ice cream flavor "Cherry Garcia" at that age. And I have listened to a decent amount of Grateful Dead and enjoy it - but I've never been one to really research bands/musicians.

Garcia's middle finger was accidentally chopped off by an axe (wielded by his brother) when he was 4. Hence the distinctive hand print.

100% agree -- but I'll go an unpopular step further. EVERY show that includes that laughing track crap is blatantly annoying, to me. Seinfeld, for example -- sucks. I could have gotten into it - maybe - if this weren't the plot sequence every damn show:

Step 1 - Insert laughing track during pre-show commercial to prep the audience for the upcoming onslaught.

Step 2 -- Open with a normal scene you'd see in every day life.

Step 3 - Insert laughing track.

Step 4 - Play stupid jingle as it cuts to another random room you'd see in everyday life.

Step 5 - Insert 5 more laughing tracks.

Step 6 - Have Kramer walk into the room (laughing track practically explodes from overuse)

Step 7 - Bring in back-up laughing machine.

Step 8 - Seinfeld completes a sentence (5 more laughing tracks).

Step 9 - All cast members pause and stare for 30 seconds while laughing tracks complete.

Step 10 - One last not-so-funny comment from cast member of choice (2nd laughing machine dies).

Step 11 - Show ends b/c no remaining laughing machines on-hand.

Step 12 - Order more laughing machines to be overnighted.

^I hate the laugh track too... I don't need to be told when to laugh. I'll laugh on my own if it's funny. That being said, that was the way of the world for sitcoms forever and ever, up until the last decade or so. Unfortunately, too many intelligent comedies never made it past the first season or two, because brain-dead idiots needed to be told what was funny.

I agree with this, I generally think the shows in the past decade or so that have included laugh track have been very unfunny, but because it was the norm for so long, I can excuse shows from pre-2000 that utilized it. So it doesn't bother me when watching Seinfeld, Cheers, Friends, Frasier, or whatever other kind of show you want to include that fits the criteria, but I find it incredibly grating on stuff like Big Bang Theory, Two and a Half Men, and the like.

I do remember that story. I even talked to my aunt about it. When I first read this post I thought this can't be the same guy (because of the name change) but then saw where your name is different now. I didn't even remember it being on this site but definitely remember it.

The Blackhorse is the brewery downtown. We love to eat there. A guy I golf with sometimes is actually the general manager there now after marrying the owner's daughter. There are not any more breweries but a couple of cool bars, with great food as well, have opened up close to it. The beer you speak of is their stout and is great. I think it runs about 9% as well. It is what I always get when we go there.

Gone for the weekend, and I missed all of this. smh

- What state do you live in, and what do you like/dislike about living there?
North Carolina for the last 10 years but born and raised in southern Virginia. I live just outside of Charlotte. I like North Carolina so much because it has literally everything you want. Mountains, beaches (although SC beaches are better), big city urban areas, etc. - NC has them all. Awesome barbeque too, which you really need to eat, if you haven't already at some point. Weather is nice, for the most part, so no complaints there either. I don't really know of anything I dislike about NC, honestly.

- What's the biggest misconception about America that people from other countries hold?
I'm in the same boat as some other people. Have to see some in order to eliminate them. I will say Americans don't refer to message board participation as "poasts" like these weirdos do.

- For those of you who've been to UNC (or any other school), how are the athletes treated on a normal day? Do they have to stop to take pictures every two minutes?
I'll just go with the answers previously provided from UNC grads. I went to Appalachian State, so sports aren't really a big deal there. I had a few classes with some of the basketball players, and nobody gave two craps they were there. I was there for the back-to-back-to-back football titles and the victory over Michigan and don't get me wrong, we definitely cared a lot about that, but it's not comparable to any school in a major conference, especially UNC.

- What are three things you would tell someone to do, were they to visit North Carolina?
Eat BBQ (I prefer Eastern style and we make a big deal about the different kinds, but really, they're all good)
Visit the mountains
Chapel Hill

- Favorite sporting moment you've been around for in Tar Heel history?
That's a tough one. I wasn't quite born yet in 82 and was only 7 when we won in 93, so I'm going to say 2005 National Championship, as far as basketball goes. 2009 was definitely special, but 2005 was Roy's first title and it was just a long time coming. I will say 2009 was a better team though. For football, I'm with THN, definitely the Gio Bernard punt return. Our run this past season is up there though.

One misconception about Americans is that we brew shitty beer. This is not true at all, but there's a reason why this misconception exists:

- the only beer that we export to other countries is super generic and not that good (Budweiser and Bud Light....not even sure if we export any other beers besides that?). It's just volume drinking beer. You drink it to get drunk or drink one or two if you're the designated driver in a group.
- there are thousands of craft beer breweries throughout the U.S. that brew extremely good beer (running the gambit from IPAs to pilsners to pale ales to wheat beer, etc) but due to a variety of factors, mainly America's very weird and complex alcohol sales and distribution laws, you can't even get these beers in different states from the brewery, much less all the way in England. There are literally hundreds of amazing beers you'll never ever have unless you go to that specific state (or even that specific city, depending on how small the brewery is) to get it.

Born and raised in southern Virginia. Went to UNC-Wilmington and lived in Wilmington / Topsail Island for about 10 years. Back in Virginia currently...plans to move back to NC.

Like the mountains about Virginia. Dislike just about everything else. No good BBQ. I'm a storm nut...the "storms" here are just heavy showers with a breeze. It's always too cold for my liking here. The oak trees drive my allergies crazy. But mostly -- I'm stuck with the F***ING REDSKINS games every week during football season. I have to watch RedZone to catch even a glimpse of Panthers games. And no, I'm not overpaying for Direct TV for 16 Sundays per year.

That we're an egotistical society that wants to police the world. Oh wait...

UNC-Wilmington was extremely laid back. Athletes were treated like anyone else.

- What are three things you would tell someone to do, were they to visit North Carolina?

Catch a Panthers game, Catch a UNC/Dook game, Go to the beach.

- Favourite sporting moment you've been around for in Tar Heel history?

Outside of the 3 national titles I was alive for ('93, '05, '09), Conner Barth's FG to beat Miami.
