June 23, 1888: The Secretary of War transferred to the Secretary of the Treasury a portion of the Fort Caswell military reservation on Oak Island, NC to be used for the site of a life-saving station and boathouse. An earlier selected site was on Piney Point near Smithville (present day Southport). The location of the Oak Island Life-saving Station is circled on this 1909 chart.
