Cadeau Questions

Well, obviously it takes more, BUT... put a real PG running last season's team? EASY Elite-8 +
Given how HD started the season with his experiment, do we know how he will play a real PG? I know it will help the entire team dynamic, but how will HD respond? His coaching has been suspect at best. I personally hope he turns the corner. His moving away from what works is concerning at best. With the PG pedigree UNC has been known for, it baffles me why we haven't had them stacked in the recruiting trail

kids today are obsessed with the NBA; our great point guards were awesome in college but didn't star in the NBA.

In my opinion, our season is dependent on having Elliott Cadeau at the point. With him we are as good as anyone. Without him, we have some serious struggles ahead of us.

I don't think it can be overstated the benefit of having a legit point guard like EC. Whether it's pushing the ball ahead via the pass, finding open cutters or just making simple post entry passes. Our team is markedly better with someone like that with the ball in their hands. Not a slam on RJ or even Love. Pure PG's are not easy to find, so when you do find a great one, you have reason to get excited! RJ will benefit tremendously by having EC find him when he's open, as will the rest of the team.

Completely agree. Our season is determined far more by what Cadeau does than any portal addition. With that said, we need a forward or two. So much still up in the air. We could be CBI bad if Cadeau doesn't reclass and we land no one else of consequence through the portal. Or we could be a top 10 team if Cadeau comes and we somehow get Mgbako and Ingram. Just a ton to still be decided.

I agree with the two posts above, Cadeau’s availability next season may largely determine our success. We could be pretty pedestrian for the same reasons as this season or we could be pretty darn good. The next few weeks will determine that. Hopefully the staff has done some self evaluation as well and they will improve too. Those are my hopes.

If he has a real PG. he will play him.

My question is more to how he would play him. I know you have questioned HD's use of player, and have been very vocal about the need of a true PG. But will they be utilized in a traditional sense or with some modern twist as we have seen since he took control

Which Duke point guard other than 9 game Kyrie, is better than Cole Anthony and Coby White currently in the NBA?

I am just using Duke as example
Probably none figuring your best option is Tyus Jones.

What concerns me about this thread is how everyone is again overhyping to the moon expectations and again acting like the next coming of Jordan is around the corner with an incoming player.

I am not going to say Cadeau isn't great or that he might lead us to great lengths, but people consider it like a given. He could be a bust. He could be great. We have a roster with a ton of holes in it right now.

I remember last year how people said Washington was a one and done and based on what he was doing in practices that when he returned from his injury he was gonna immediately be a star and still be one and done yadda yadda. Washington did not look to be even in that stratosphere right now.

It's good to be excited and hope for the best, but some people really need to tone down expectations, a lot of higher ranked players have been busts than Cadeau, and a lot of lower ranked players have been tremendous. It's basically a crapshoot at this point with rankings and how things turn out.

Emoni Bates was the next DURANT for heavens sake lol.

Kendall Marshall was a consensus 4 star who many were saying was way overrated in high school (about 27th-32 in the rankings so not low). He may have been our best pure passing point guard ever, maybe even in all of college basketball.

Ranked 9th in PGs. Behind Kyrie, Josh Selby, Brandon Knight, Corey Joseph, Joe Jackson, Ryan Harrow (lol), Vander Blue, and Keala King.

Ty Lawson was 2nd in his class for PGs behind Javaris Crittenton. (I think we know who we would say is better). Figuring Javaris' biggest feat was a locker room dispute with Gilber Arenas.

Cadeau is 1st or 2nd depending where you look with Zoom Diallo (for his non reclassified class), but the thing is that anointing him a star and acting like our team is going to be all the sudden great if he is there is probably setting unreal expectations, which leads to hate if he doesn't live up to them. We should be just hoping for the best if he comes. Not saying we are automatically an elite eight team or such if he does. We got way too many holes right now as is.

Well, the question I do have is the commitment to actually get one this season and use him as such. If Cadeau wants to come, then game over. Hand him the ball and the keys and get back to Carolina transition/freelance supplemented with set plays. Same if Cadeau stays in 24 and we bring in a legit transfer PG for a year.

Either way, RJ needs to get over the conceit that he is a PG, and if necessary, the staff needs to, um, assist him in that endeavor. From everything I've heard, Hubert "gets" all that. If however, we end up without either of the above options?... Then... just ugh at that prospect.

I would love to see the transition game come back, and really hope that the addition of said true PG would solve the issues we have witnessed. But would that happen with the style HD has coached? Does anyone know if HD believes in the transition freelance style? A 3 guard style as some suggest seems like high volume shots with low rebounding.

I don't know if the transition game can come back with our current personnel.

If Cadeau comes in and if RJ moves off the ball, I am going to be interested to see how they keep the ball from sticking to his hands each time he receives a pass and how they prevent him from trying to be a second pg and just be a sg. We don’t need a scenario where he begins dribbling the air out of the ball when he receives a pass. His vision is not the best, but he will need to keep the ball moving.

What I'm trying to convey is that trying to teach Carolina principles to last season's Guards was like trying to teach civility to Coach K.

Caleb needed to go. (Check)
RJ needs to move off the ball.
Period.

That would not be an issue.

Gary, I think the use of conceit on RJ's part is an unfortunate use of the word. RJ, like most frosh, especially the 4 and 5 star freshmen, came in convinced he was a for sure future NBA player and realizing his size knew his NBA future was as a PG. Of course it is rare that a 4 or 5 star kid comes in fully grounded in reality. I think at this point RJ fully realizes some things he didn't as a incoming freshman, like the NBA is not really knocking at his door, like if he does get to the NBA his cup of coffee is not likely to get cold by the time he is off to Europe. That means it is not as important now that he play the point as it was as a frosh and that now what is more important is that he is seen as a strong reason his team wins no matter where his coach has him play. I don't think at his point RJ cares what position he plays as long as he can get solid PT. He should, I think he will now look at the degree he is getting from UNC is way more important than he thought it would be, reality may at times suck but it is never wrong.

So I don't think RJ would give any resistance at all to being moved to the 2, as long as he can play. I think now what he wants above al else is simply to win, to simply get all the doubters off his back and to once again feel the love from UNC fans. If Hubert told RJ that he was our starting center for next season that kid would go out and do everything thing in his power to make it work, that kid is not scared of a challenge and he will not back down. I think he would embrace being moved to the 2.

If you play your starters 35+ minutes a game you simply will not be forcing a up tempo game to happen, you will in fact be looking to slow it down. In order to get back to a high tempo style game we simply have to use the bench, it is not really complicated. There is zero need to even try to teach UNC breaking principles to a team that is not going to break often. It is like why teach a pac man defense to a team that is never going to play it? LOL

I wouldn't expect that to be a problem. At least not a problem of intent. It might be a problem of habit, but should be easy to fix.

If I'm RJ, I might be a little worried about getting the ball. His shooting percentage might go up if Cadeau gets him the ball when he's open and set - something that rarely happened when Caleb had the ball. But will he get the ball enough?

All I know is what I've seen in Cadeau's clips. Some of his passes remind me a lot of Kendall. But Kendall was always looking to make the inside pass or the long pass to someone streaking toward the rim. How often will RJ be on the receiving end of those kinds of passes?

RJ took 409 shots last year. How many will he take without the ball in his hands so much?

Time will tell.
