They would never survive without federal funds.
100% in favor. They would be begging to come back.
California is the 6th largest economy in the world. They would be fine on their own.

I don't see how they could overcome all the legal obstacles it would take for them to secede. Would probably be a lot easier to just buy them some tissues.

Zing! Lol. And I agree with you they'd be fine. The real advantage of them leaving would be gained by the other 49 states. California has so many stupid laws and Props that make things harder for other states or entities that exist in other states that want to do business in California. Things like that.

I would assume that some of those laws would be scrubbed off the books...? For instance, there's a specific California Prop that states a small business must get verification from all vendors that the materials used in your product do not cause harm to drinking water supplies, or something like that. Legally, you can't sell your product in California without satisfying this Prop. It's very tedious and annoying for me, as an employee of a small business, to call all my vendors and have them fax over a certificate validating the environmental safety of their materials we use to manufacture our products.

Like New York, Cali is the ultimate example of excess governmental red tape.

Also, I'd assume Republicans everywhere would embrace this change big time because it would mean the presidency race just got much easier for the GOP. I'd assume California would no longer get to vote..?

Yeah ... about that. The lists vary a bit depending on methodology but California is fairly low on the list of states dependent on federal funds.

This CalExit stuff is silly and ridiculous but pretending the state isn't a yuuge, positive part of the nation's economy is just as asinine.

Maybe federal funds wasn't the right way to say it. California is already 400 billion in debt just from their current obligations. If they decide to break away they would now be responsible for 100% of social security and any funding they get for law enforcement, infrastructure, etc. The funding of social security alone would break them unless they decided to do away with social security. I seriously doubt they would do that, so they would have to increase taxes by a large amount. People and businesses would leave the state en masse, which of course would kill the economy. They can't afford to leave, but I would love to see them do it from an economic experiment point of view.

Much ado about nothing. However it would be funny to watch this play out, especially when Northern California would follow by trying to cede from SoCal.
To be honest, this would be MUCH better. Isn't there some kooky plan that's been discussed, involving us moving from 50 states to 60? NYC would break away from New York, Florida would split into upper and lower, California would split into half or thirds, and Texas would split into fourths or something. I can't remember all the details.

Me too until I saw who the OP was.

Exactly. If this were to ever play out - NoCal would be trying to get back into the US. SoCal would be in a tough spot without the northern half. LA makes a lot of money, but so does Silicon Valley. And the vast majority of problems in California are in the southern part.

I think it came up either last year or 2015 that CalExit would entail California seceeding from the US and then busting up into SEVEN separate states under the Peoples Republic of California... I may have poasted something about that last year. An interesting, if highly unlikely, prospect.
