CHAPEL HILL – University of North Carolina baseball and football teams established their highest-ever single-year Academic Progress Rates and UNC’s average for all sports was 994 out of 1000, which for the second consecutive year was the program’s highest since the NCAA began tracking APR for student-athletes in 2003.

The current data reflects the 2020-21 school year and four-year rates from 2017-18 to 2020-21. The NCAA uses Academic Progress Rates to track the academic performance of scholarship students who compete on varsity teams. The score measures eligibility and retention each semester by student athletes at every NCAA institution.

Carolina’s single-year average of 994 tied the ninth-highest score among the 65 schools in the Power 5 conferences and its four-year average of 991 equaled the 12th highest.

The Tar Heel baseball and football teams both registered a 1000 for the first time. For football, this was the second consecutive year the team earned its highest APR since the metric was created in 2003.

Football was one of eight men’s teams to hit the 1000 mark in 2020-21, which tied UNC’s record for most perfect scores in a single-year by men’s teams. UNC previously had eight men’s teams register 1000s in 2014-15.

This was the ninth time 10 or more women’s teams scored 1000.

Eighteen Tar Heel teams posted 1000s in 2020-21, an increase of three from a year ago. They include baseball (the first in program history), men’s basketball (9th), men’s cross country (10th), women’s cross country (12th), football (1st), men’s fencing (11th), women’s fencing (18th), field hockey (10th), men’s golf (11th), women’s golf (17th), women’s lacrosse (11th), rowing (10th), men’s soccer (8th), women’s soccer (10th), men’s swimming and diving (12th), women’s swimming and diving (13th), women’s tennis (15th) and volleyball (16th).

Eight programs – an increase of three from a year ago – have compiled a four-year rate of 1000. Teams with four-year perfect marks include men’s and women’s fencing, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s swimming and diving and women’s tennis.

Twenty-four of UNC’s 28 teams scored at least 980 and 21 achieved at least a 990 (a five-sport increase from a year ago).

Women’s fencing earned a single-year 1000 for the 18th time in the 18-year history of the APR. Women’s golf scored its fourth straight and 17th overall 1000 and volleyball had its third 1000 in a row and 16th total.

Men’s golf has the longest active streak of 1000s on the men’s side at six.
