Carolina vs Virginia Tech game thread on Tuesday 4 March 2025

I guess I missed it, but social media is saying Hubert and Withers got into it when Hubert yanked him earlier in the game. Hubert was hot and Withers backtalked him

Powerful win, may have been our best game this season. Last 10mins of first half and first ten of the second, really strong.

I have no idea what Coach Davis said to the team with 4 minutes left in the first half when the game was still close or what he said in the locker room between halves because whatever he said at both times needs to be bottled because the team exploded after both times….

Another game of phenomenal offensive stats.
  • FG -> 59%
  • 3FG -> 54% (!)
    • 3PT volume - accounted for half of the team's shots. But given the positive of the offensive stats, hard to argue against it.
  • EFG -> 72% (!!!)
  • TS% -> 72% (!!!)
  • Only 12 FTA, but they made 10. Didn't watch the game, but not unusual to have a lower stat when 3PT volume is up
  • Offensive Efficiency: Another game of 130+. Only ~ 68 possessions too.
    • 6-game avg of 133.7
  • 5th game in a row of 5+ in double-figures
  • A/TO ratio was 1.84/1. The first 25 games of the season it was 1.29. Over the last 6, the average is 1.67
    • Turnovers were high (13), but this just makes the offensive efficiency even-more astounding, especially given the average of 4 less possessions over the last 6 vs. the first 25
    • EC was 12/3
  • 73% Assisted Field Goals
    • Highest metric of the season; only 7th time this year where it has been above 60%. First since the Wake game (??? true though)
  • 46 (!!!) bench points - highest of the season (did IJ come off the bench?)
Rebounds
  • Another 10+ rebound margin game (5 games in a row). Is Roy wearing a Hubert Davis mask?
    • Also will mention that because of their FG metrics, there were naturally less opportunities for offensive rebounds.
  • Another game where they grabbed 54% + of all rebound opportunities
    • 5 in a row now of that too. Prior to, the most consecutive games in a row where they were 50+% was 3.
Defense
  • Defensive Efficiency metric of 88. Lowest allowed since the GaTech game
  • 10 steals. Most since game vs. Florida
  • Held VT to 41% on 2FG.

At the 3:29 mark of the first half, it was 31-27.

I counted ~ 42 possessions in the play-by-play in the span of the last 23:29 of the game. UNC outscored VT 60-31.
For that span of time, that would yield an offensive efficiency rating (pts per 100 possessions) of 142.9
