Coach Smith

I dont ascribe to sports hero worship much. But he was as close to one to me as anyone can get. Other coaches have won more, but to me, his body of work and the positive influence he had on the game and his players makes him the goat. I got to meet him and shake his hand once as a freshman. His advice: study hard and call your mom once a week. To this day i still do call my mom once a week.

Sad day for me. Loved Coach Smith. You can tell a lot about a coach by the way his players loved him. In that respect, Coach Smith had no equals. I met him once in 1967 when my high school played in Carmichael for the state championship. Always will remember that.
